Does Sion take too long to revive?

Done25··42 votes·16,182 views

After just two single games I've noticed a rather annoying tendency for Sion's passive. As soon as he dies the enemy just steps about 5 feet away, launches any kind of CC in his direction, and he's dead from bleed out before he can even take 3 steps. Three suggestions: 1: Shorter or no wind up - This makes it harder for people to simply just walk away from him. 2: His speed booster removes/ignores slows on cast - This way one single slow, possible an AoE not even aimed at him(!), wont render him completely useless. 3: Slower bleed out - Rather than him losing a percent of his HP every second, make him lose a flat amount. That way Sion's extra HP will help him survive longer, rather than just causing him lose even more health every second.

Flat amount on HP decay makes sense. Will look into that (or other stuff like speed etc) for the next patch.

Regardless, I hope you guys are crushing noobs with new Sion.

i am enjoying him so far. Done25 has a point though, if you take any damage during his passive it seems like you are lucky to get a single hit off.

Another thing I have been noticing is that if you touch a wall even in the slightest bit during sions ult he stops... im talking like his elbow barely brushing against a tree in the jungle will make you stop. I like the whole running into a wall punishment system to his ult but it is kind of ridiculous how touchy it is. I have hit my ult multiple times now only to stun myself because it turns out what I thought was no where near a wall was actually 3 units to close.

SerBlaise2 votes

Lol i did the same thing. Probably like 7 times in one game. You literally have to plan out the path to take. I think you can reactivate the ult to stop though. So many times i just charged hilariously past the team fight and got lost in the river somewhere. It sucked, but i have to admit i was entertained as hell.

BlazingSalvo2 votes

Well, I mean think about it. A %cost or bleed out is punishing players who build health or farm his W. His passive gets worse the tankier you are, since the lifesteal becomes harder to sustain the berserker state. That's bad design.

Holy crap, a red reply. :D If I may, I would suggest looking at his passive to be more like Gnar's uncontrollable transformation, rather than Karthus's Death Defied. It's an uncontrollable kit change with massive bonuses in exchange for loosing your skills and quickly dying afterwards.

Sion is actually in a pretty decent spot. They just need to fix his bugs and make his passive more useful.

his ult is terrible because it's hard to aim on top of being easy to dodge and his q might as well not exist as an ability given how easily it's dodged/interrupted

That's why every Sion I watched at diamond play was wrecking lanes as a jungler, right? If you're going to complain about a champion, make sure it's not just you first, so you don't end up butchering a good champion.

No, I do not main nor have I ever played Sion's new rework. I can analyze and tell what he can and cannot do while watching people who play better than I do, though. This is not my opinion - this is based on actual events being applied to your logic; by your logic, Sion would be losing, not winning.

I think that his bleed out should be a flat amount, still increasing obviously, otherwise it'd be broken, which is why they made it the way it is(but they made the wrong choice by it being a % of HP), I mean the way it is the more HP you have instead of dmg, the worse your passive is, you'd get the most duration out of it if you had like 1k hp and nothing but dmg items, and that just makes it feel wrong. That's the least favorable change though(but one that should be made in addition imo), I mean I was fighting Renekton before, and just what do you do about that? if he stuns you, you can't catch him, if he dashes, you can't catch him, 2 things he has off CD very often. I understand that there's some enemies that can't get away from you(though I can't name any off the top of my head...), and yeah, you do massive dmg if someone lets you pound on em, but there shouldn't BE a passive that's 100% useless against so many of the champions(without team assistance or perfect circumstances), I honestly can't think of a single champion that can't stop his passive. They either need to fix it or scrap it imo.

Dremiist5 votes

100% agree with you imo they should make it do flat damage with a double increase per second.

ex: 1/2/4/8/16/32/64/128/256/512/1024/2048/4096/8192 etc... this way if you have lets say 4k health you will last 13 sec and less considering you take more damage than you can possibly lifesteal and at 14 second its a certain death unless you miraculously have 8k health good luck. the thing you said about his passive going full damage i feel it when i played him on PBE i though the same thing as you going full damage when you re supposed to build health? it doesnt make sense... the passive dealt % health damage and increase per second its countering sion health stacking principle. no matter how much health you build or farm you would die at the same amount of time and the only possible way to last longer would be to build crits and lifesteal which would be suicidal he have no gap closer and his CC is not reliable. isnt sion supposed to be late game? he farm health and considering riot nerfed his health stacking I don't see a reason.

Skiren2 votes

Yeah, Sion is very clunky, I almost never AA enemies at all, maybe 1 AA when they're CC'd by a successful Q, so building lifesteal+crit doesn't even work(I mean 1vs1 really, you can AA better in team fights, but my point is he isn't capable of consistently AA'ing), which... may actually be a big problem with him in general, but only time will tell if he works fine as clunky as he is. But yeah, the only way you can increase his passive is pure dmg if you don't want to make him mostly useless when he's not in his passive state, and that's when you just run into the problem with catching people. I mean the thing is, his move speed doesn't last long enough to do more than 1 hit on an enemy who is running from you, if that, FORGET hitting an enemy with ANY CC or high move speed(was fighting Yi before, and as you might expect, he's faster than Sion even with Sion's speed activated)

There is some minor helpers for his problems that I've tried, like I've found that Phage and Frozen Mallet will let you consistently AA someone if you've got both, and Death Surge does trigger Iceborn Gauntlet, but those still don't help with the CC problem.(and it takes a while to get them)

Dremiist2 votes

yeah time will tell but for now i think everyone will agree his passive need some work.

Zulgaines11 votes

In theory, in reality any CC in the game neutralizes the 5 second threat. Actually his whole rework is a little underwhelming.

All of Riots reworks lately seem to be based on the debilitating fear of something being OP.

I was a Soraka who was quite literally right next to a Sion when he died. He didn't even hit me ONCE.

bloodmoth7 votes

%hp loss is fine, its alot easier to control, if he lost that he would also have to lose his %hp damage on hit. its really fine how it is, its ridiculously OP (1.7 AS, 10% MAX HP on hit!) because its so strong it needs to be unreliable, in team fights if they kill you first, they now have to blow CC on you. if feels shitty for you when they do that, but because you soak up that CC, your allies dont need to worry about it. there is healthy decision making involved (it is unfortunately entirely on the enemies behalf) where they can waste CC on a dead champ or risk getting obliterated by a berserking sion

Rueian3 votes

I think unreliable isn't the right word. I think its more 'useless'

bloodmoth3 votes

perhaps he could lose the 10%HP on hit damage for more reliability then? it is really situational power, but because of its drawbacks it gets to be really powerful.

They could remove some of the power and make it more reliable, but would that feel better?

At the moment i dont think that he is balanced around his passive, would they need to tax other areas of his kit to increase reliability?

I mean it still works as an aoe fear when you revive, if they lowered his damage people could just ignore it.

But i suppose if the counter is alot easier than the threat it does become disappointing.

Rueian3 votes

they want him built as a tank, but his passive counter acts building as a tank.

You get 100% life steal, but lose a huge chunk of your max hp per second. you profit more from building full DPS. This is a similar consistancy issue sion had before with huge AP ratios and an ultimate that profits from building DPS

bloodmoth2 votes

hardly, hp is still relevant, if you build glass cannon you will die in one aa, his resists still play a part, his hp still matters, hell he gets a free heal to max HP, if thats 100hp who cares? if its 10k thats alot.

he also gets free damage that is locked at a certain attack speed, 1.7 as with 10% maxhp on hit.

Also you shouldnt be building to maximize your passive, thats not what sion is, its a bonus that is really independant of what you build.

also he can be built with more offense or defense depending on taste, thats up to the players, riot isnt forcing anything

Rueian2 votes

You dont seem to quite understand that you build tank, and then your passive is just as useless if not more useless as if you build DPS. The more HP you have the 'less' time your passive lasts.

With a lower HP build you can heal up using that 100% life steal and keep yourself healthy where as with high HP you cant heal faster than the HP loss which makes the passive last less time.

Your end game goal is to be a brusier, but because of the inverse useful ness of HP on his passive you want to minimize your maximum HP, while maximizing your damage and resistances.

Same issue with old sion, build brusier, your Shield was useless, build AP your ultimate was useless. There wasn't a consistant theme between his skills.

bloodmoth2 votes

its give or take, if you build full dps, you heal up for more, but you can get killed alot faster (which your forgetting), if you build hp, you can tank a few more hits and have a chance to catch them, but your lifesteal wont be as impactful, which option is better depends on how the fight plays out, build tanky and you can get to them, build squishy, you wont get to them, but if you do you will last longer.

Also i dont think that your understanding the whole 10%maxHP on hit part of it, where it doesnt care what damage your doing, you will heal up 10% of whatever your opponents hp is.

How much uptime on his passive are you expecting to have? your acting like the fight will last long enough for the lifesteal to matter significantly. you heal up 10% of their max hp twice per second regardless of if you build AD crit or whatever, thats just gravy, but if you die just trying to make it to the foe your going to regen nothing, if you can stick to them they are likely to die and you are likely to survive long enough regardless

the numbers arent a problem, they really arent, its the practicality, its currently very hit or miss, much like most of his kit. that depends on how powerful you want it to be.

Rueian2 votes

Unless you are hitting a tank that has more HP than you, that 10% on hit, if it is physical (mitigated by armor) wont heal you for squat. 10% of a squishy carry, is nothing, building AD and crit makes you hit that ADC for MUCH more than you think.

Building more HP wont make you live longer because the other main issue is that he wont get a chance to even hit someone when he dies currently. He dies to quickly from bleed-out, not from taking damage, and the bleed-out also ramps up the longer you are alive. His passive is just a poorly thought out skill. Hence 'passive is useless'

While alive, building tanky is alright, but he still just gets outclassed other than his shield in damage and his inconsistant Q stun. He has alot of soft CC. But if you build bruiser with atma's you'll get ALOT more out of him. And depending on how well your farming goes you can just build DPS and still be a very large tank.

bloodmoth1 votes

if you can catch a carry you will live long enough to kill them(they die faster), if you catch a tank, you will still live long enough to kill them. not sure what the problem is. building HP will make you live more, because if they turn on you and try to kill you, you will lose a greater % of HP from their hit, making you die quicker. HOW DO YOU NOT GET THAT yeah he has trouble catching someone, but building AD isnt going to help that cause either. in fact, if they turn to attack you, HP may allow you to get 1 step closer to rip their face off.

Your just changing the goal post to win your arguments

Rueian2 votes

You wont catch anyone with his current state unless they are dumb. Damage items have moement speed or better actives to allow you to catch up, assuming you can use actives. The best you can get out of tank items, is omen.

You dont seem to understand that regardless of how much HP you build you'll die relatively the same time. No one will attack you they will avoid you, except the ADC who can poke you at range. They are going to drop 1 heavy slow or a stun/root on you and you die. Building hp will not make you survive that more or less. The only thing HP lets you do is survive longer 'while' alive, assuming you arn't farming well which then why wouldn't you want a more damage focused bruiser build. item 3005 item 3156

bloodmoth2 votes

Right... im really not arguing against that, the way the max hp drop works is an artificial timer, you get X seconds, if you dont attack anyone in that time you die, regardless of how much defensive stats you buy. your opponent can attack you to shorten that time if they wish. if you attack someone in that time, you gain more time alive, which increases with the damage you deal. defensive stats reduce how much the opponent can reduce your time, offensive stats increase the time return from hitting enemies.

if you cant attack anyone in X seconds, you die.

We can agree on all that right?

so your arguing something on top of that, where because you are unlikely to catch someone, it doesnt matter. in that case you are right, but i am also right because it can affect your time alive, i was arguing with your statement that HP negatively affects your uptime, which is only true if you have uptime, which you now say is unlikely.

So i can agree that no matter your stats, if you die in 5s and you cant catch someone in 5s, you die in 5s. stats are non-applicable in that case.

So we agree on these points, we just needed to be on the same page in order to resolve this dispute, now you laid your cards on the table we put this argument to rest

Done253 votes

I'd prefer if it's more consistent. Either you can't reach anyone in time, or someone dies. It's really feast or famine.

bloodmoth3 votes

so you would rather that you get some guaranteed damage off before dying? so reliably 1-4 hits before you get stomped?

Done253 votes

so you would rather that you get some guaranteed damage off before dying? so reliably 1-4 hits before you get stomped?

Very much so. I think part of the problem is that as the most tanky person on most teams Sion will almost always be the last to fall. Add in the lengthy "revive" peroid and the fight will be almost or completely over by the time he's back up and ready to dish out some DPS.

bloodmoth2 votes

You make a really good point about him being the last to fall. i guess revive passives are better on squishies like zyra, kogmaw and karthus.

in that case, i suppose you just want to love tap that last squishy into a grave, meaning that obscene damage isnt really all that beneficial

i guess when looking at its use cases like that it probably should be more of an 'ill hunt you down and end you' type skill. I dont think that its too much to ask considering how unreliable his whole kit is, with his Qs long charge, minion billiards, freight train ult and his melee range shield with no mobility.

In that case i believe it probably does need a buff in reliability, but i do feel that its current state it does seem really beastly and brutal, it embodies his old ultimate which is cool in a way

Dryditch1 votes

I like that idea about love-tapping that last squishy into the grave.

It feels like Sion's passive (if they want to keep it as this weird revive thing) should be something that actually stuns his enemies or does universal damage when he revives. I'm thinking about it like Sid from Soul Eater.

He's a zombie, and he arrives, grabbing hold of his victim then jumping out of the ground/pulling them down.

Alternatively, I'd like to see Sion get something similar to an olaf passive when he revives. Two second duration, maybe. After that, bleedout kicks in, and he can get CC-ed.

bloodmoth3 votes

Yeah its kind of hard, when he pulls off his current passive, its freaking deadly, he can punch a full tank to death in seconds and thats just brutal! it really conveys hulking badass Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson style brutality which is incredibly satisfying, but at the same time, you end up getting the shit kited out of you.... in Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson fashion :/

The current one really says "GURRR IM NOT DONE YET, GET BACK HERE!" if it were more like kogmaws it would feel more spiteful than brutal.

there is a conflict in character there. i suppose if he revived faster that would be enough, and i like the cc invulnerability idea, where he gets severe tunnel vision after reviving, relentlessly running down his target.

Xyltin6 votes

It is meant to be like that. He would be pretty broken if he could attack back every time he dies, because then, you would only get away with a CC, or he will get a revenge kill.

His passive is meant to be something to scare off enemies around him after he dies. It creates some kind of safe zone for his team. Great at dragon or baron fights or when your team really needs a front line. You can go in and use everything and die, and the enemy will still have to run away from you. If they don't do it backwards as a full man team and are faster than your team at the same time (unlikely because you should CC them before you die) they are going to waste time avoiding you while your team can pick out an enemy or two, or they are going to allow you to AA some of them, and even 2 AA deal a great amount of dmg.

sion is already pretty likely to die when he goes in no matter what, it SHOULD be very difficult for the enemy to stop him before he gets one revenge kill because he has no way to disengage from a fight he's entered. zyra has a very dependable burst of damage after death, karthus is THE revenge kill champion, and even kog'maw feels like his passive is more impactful than sion.

Oh, you mean like Heim's turrets that inexplicably remain after death?

Sion's passive is ludicrously easy to counter. He needs a very brief mspeed boost on spawning or something.

junglerboy165 votes

Yeah, for the amount of time it takes for Sion's new passive to activate, the speed boost should at least be increased in speed and duration, because he seems like he almost never gets to attack anything if the enemy has half a brain and walks away.

Sniper 04 votes

I feel like the time it takes him to revive on his passive gives you time to counter play it. Honestly maybe his skill could have a debuff remove or something, if the enemy overextends they are punished for it. If they are playing smart they are not. ;3

Giving him this rather than immunity to cc opens up counterplay as well.

Just played my first game with Sion after rework...This is my exact thought too. Rather than his passive turning him into a temporary unstoppable juggernaut, I was extremely surprised when I found out that I could get CC'd. Not even a CC reduction! It doesn't feel right. I only died a few times, but every time did, i would get CC'd and would bleed out almost as soon as the cc ended.

BlazingSalvo3 votes

Yeah honestly the %bleed out is retarded from a design perspective. Your passive PUNISHES you for farming up. Like wut.

Gonna play devil's advocate a bit here, but if you're dying and are not able to take full/much advantage of his passive, then perhaps maybe you should try and die less often? Or only die when the enemy isn't in a position to simply walk away, such as in a siege or a teamfight?

I'm just saying, it makes sense that you'd feel bummed that they're able to just ignore your passive so easily, but it doesn't hurt to work around it yourself and make sure you have your bases covered. Hasty decision-making rarely results in anything good.

I was a Soraka RIGHT NEXT to a Sion when he died. I just walked away, casted my Q, and he was already half dead by the time the slow ran out. My team just walked away.

Eh, no. He gets a huge chance at revenge. I've played quite a few matches on PBE and it almost always results in him killing someone else.

Give it time, people will realize it's strong.

The problem is right here: "On PBE" I've been on the PBE before, and unless it has changed for the better most people are just there to goof off and look at the new changes. It isn't really a good place for competitive testing, unless you're testing for Wood V.
