When Gnar is involved, in most of my Bronze games, the deciding factor in who wins is who has him. I swear people just don't know what he does. I really don't know why because he's pretty popular. They just watch him running around, and they go in all like, "Huh, I wonder why he's glowing red and his resource bar has been filling up this whole time instead of going down. Oh, well, better get in close and try to dive him. That's totally how it's going to work.

FIRST BLOOD

WTF

Nasus: Good if you know how to use him, and has amazing late game. Laning can be a small problem, but whither will take care of your kiting problems in a hurry.

Sion: Very safe toplane pick. He's got poke/harass, he's got cc for days, he builds tankiness whenever you last-hit a minion, and he has a huge shield that, if they don't destroy it, you can blow it up in their face instead to win the trade instantly. It's hard to go wrong with him... Also, if you're having trouble with his ult, let me introduce you to wall-drifting:

I'm bad at Nasus but in gold people start to learn how to shut you down. Even if fed, you get kited to everywhere. Adc withered? If it's vayne, corki etc you are gonna still get kited. Especially in teamfights you will go down fast.

And this brings us to a part of league of legends: Team composition. If they have a team comp with yasuo and vayne, you probably don't want to pick nasus. Sion is debatable, because you can trick people into running into your abilities, even when they dash. Lots of top laners have trouble with agile carries, so that's something that you may have to practice against and find your own methods for.

Gnar is extremely good if you know how to play him. He's really not that easy to pick up and play, however. He has strong laning and really good CC for teamfights. Gnar has to be able to utilize both of his forms effectively, however the nature of his passive, Rage Gene, makes that difficult because it is uncontrollable. In laning, it is much easier to do this since you have time to build up rage and you can choose whether or not to go in. In teamfights being able to change into Mega form and chain stunning the enemy team can instantly win you a fight. However, if you fail to engage well, you can also lose the fight for your team entirely. Mega Gnar deals high burst damage and is really tanky, so he is really good at engaging and fighting, while Mini Gnar is squishy but deals high sustained damage and is very mobile, so he specializes more in kiting and in prolonged fights. In lane you would want to poke as Mini Gnar and brawl with the opposing laner as Mega Gnar.
