A Friendly Discussion 1, Diversity

Diversity - Noun

The condition of having or being composed of differing elements: variety; especially: the inclusion of different types of people in a group or organization.

What is diversity in LOL? It's a big part of LoL gameplay. In this case it would be "The condition of having differing elements, especially in the selection of different champion types, in each game." However, what are these elements? what makes diversity in LOL? Currently there are 69/126 champions being seen at worlds. Some would say this meets the standards for diversity at a 55% differing champion pick rate. There is more to diversity beyond just champions though. I know I for one would love to see even more champions at worlds and in my individual games but that isn't the question here.

There are items, team compositions, play styles, positioning, win conditions, roles, jungle routes, and far more that I could list. The discussion I would like to start is what is diversity to you? Is it just number of champions being played? If you really sit down and think about it what brings diversity to your League of Legends game? What makes you think that the game you are playing now is unique from the last game?

I'll start.

To me, diversity isn't about the number of different champions I see per game. It is about how those champions play differently from other champions, or rather Champion types. I main support myself and I can say from experience that many supports have radically different play styles. Soraka the banambulance, Sona the mistress of damage, Leona the all in master, Thresh of a thousand tricks, The savior Tahm Kench, Braum the shield, blitz the walking claw machine, and so on. Every champion has similarities and differences but when a champions difference is a huge part of their kit it makes the game feel unique to me. I play differently against just about every bot lane match-up due to their differing play styles.

To me a game becomes unique and diverse when I myself need to play in a different way.

If I am against a Soraka I will play differently then if I was playing against a Leona because their play styles are so radically different that I need to adjust to play against them. I have been a support main for a long time now because i have to change how I play more often as a support then in any other role and I love that feeling that I might need to try something new with every game.

So do you think LoL is diverse? I was reading the climax of your definition of diversity only to find out you left out a conclusion of whether you think LoL has diversity or not, lol.

As for me, I feel like it's good to see champs that have different kits and playstyles than the others, but what creates diversity is how one champ can be used other than just one intended role (Ex: Tahm Kench can go bot/top/jungle).

My favorite 'diverse' champ has to be Kennen. I think he can go anywhere, top/mid/jungle/adc/supp, without being too dominant of that role.

I feel that LoL has quite a bit of diversity. I think many take it for granted just how much. Is there room for improvement? Absolutely, but it is a very slow process to improve diversity. This is historically true too, diversity is a difficult thing to achieve and the more diverse you try to make something the more problems pop up that need to be dealt with before more diversity can be attained.

After seeing Kennen as, Mid, Sup, ADC, and top (haven't seen a jungle game with him yet, do you have a link?) I agree. He has a very flexible kit and he's on my next to buy list. I was particularly impressed with his performance as an ADC in worlds as he was more utility based then Ashe! Watching Fanatic's games with the Kennen ADC really felt unique to me.
