The ten champion types and what they do.

To help people figure out Riot's arcane, and often inconsistent/wrong, champion sorting rules, here's a small guide. There are ten major types of champions, two for each of the five main classes.

The five main classes are: Slayer, Fighter, Mage, Marksman, and Tank.

Slayers all share one very specific trait. Sheer mobility. You can't catch them, but they can easily catch you.

The first Slayer type is the Skirmisher. These guys bring enough raw dps to shred your back line into itty bitty pieces. They jump in when the moment is ripe and they don't stop until their target is dead. In exchange, they're often quite frail if they mess up their defensive timing. Yi, Nocturne, Fiora, Yasou, and Shaco.

The second type is the Assassin. Their flit about the edges of a team fight until a gap in the defenses is exposed. Then they'll jump in, unload, and escape before the other team can retaliate. They often have high burst but lack the dps of the Skirmisher. Candidates of this slippery playstyle include the likes of Fizz, LeBlanc, Ahri, Talon, and Zed.

In comparison, Fighters are beefy melee ranged camps that favor raw AD and make up for lack of mobility by kicking your teeth in if they catch you. They are divided into Divers and Juggernauts.

Divers (Which is a stupid thing to call them, Duelist would have been much more accurate) focus heavily on 1v1 combat. Almost all of their damage is single target and they are very difficult to take down if not focused. Notable "Divers" include the likes of Olaf, Jax, Udyr, Irelia, and Trundle.

Juggernauts trade single target DPS for AoE and speed for even more bulk. This makes them great for wading into the middle of a fight and murdering a whole team. Examples include Darius, Garen, Volibear, and Mordekaiser.

Mages snap their fingers and make your head explode or heal your wounds. They favor AP and nuking your whole team from orbit, or possibly providing a shield to survive said nuke.

One one side of the coin we have, for lack of a better term, Burst Mages. Everything about their kit screams raw killing power. From Brand, to Annie, to Vel'Koz. Every button they press brings pain. Technically there are three varieties, but they really all do the exact same thing. Kill the enemy team. Some just do it from a slightly longer range than others.

On the other side we have Support Mages. These champions sacrifice raw damage for utility. Shields, healing, speed control. They are the likes of Orianna, Morgana, Sona, Karma, and Soraka. They are the person you turn to when you're at 5% HP and Karthus slams his R key so hard that it breaks.

Next up are the Marskmen. Riot doesn't have specific terms for them so I'll be making up my own to best describe the two play styles.

First up, you've got the Artillery. These guys tend to lack the raw over time dsp of their counter parts, but they make up for it with powerful abilities that have long ranges. Corki, Ezreal, Varus, Caitlyn, and Kog'Maw.

In contrast we have the Machine Gunners. Their kits often come with raw stat boosts and abilities that reward consist attacking. Jinx, Ashe, Vayne, Sivir.

Last, but certainly not least, we have Tanks. What they lack in killing power they make up for with survivability and more CC than you can shake a stick at!

Leading the charge is the Vanguard. These champions favor AoE that makes them shine in team fights. Basically Juggernauts with more CC in exchange for less raw dps. Galio, Amumu, Sejuani, and Malphite.

In the back lines are the Wardens. The defenders of the meek and frail. What they lack in Vanguard's AoE they make up for in unparalleled peeling power and utility. You can always count on Thresh, Alistair, or Braum to deal with the incoming Rengar and buy your Jinx time to do what she does best. Blowing stuff up.

You're almost there.

Slayer is the class name.

Assassins have the mobility and Skirmishers have the insane 1v1 power.

You're pretty solid in the fighter class, just swap duelist to diver and you're good.

We actually have three mage subclasses.

Burst mages are self explanatory, gated by long cooldowns.

Artillery mages have the longest range, are super squishy and are usually dead if caught out. Are masters of the poke comp.

Battle mages whittle down their opponents with short cooldowns and DPS, and can swap targets midfight much better than a burst mage.

The utility mages are part of a seperate class called the Controllers.

This consists of Enchanters and Disruptors

Enchanters focus on buffing your team, Disruptors focus on hindering the enemy team, usually by creating giant zones of NOPE.

I like your marksmen classifications. Definitely a distinction between the AD casters and the atk speed ADCs.

The tank section"s pretty good too.

Overall I give this guide an A for effort. :)

In my defence, I did this all on my tiny smart phone and mostly from memory. Not to mention I was trying to condense the fact that riot has like 5 different varieties of mage. Still, thank you for the positive feed back. :D When I wake up tomorrow I might try and refine things a bit.

Overall, this isn't bad. Tyrek Goldenspear's got the terminology that Statikk gave us a few months ago, and a few of the champions you named were in the wrong categories, but this is a good attempt to explain the old classes.

I had hoped that with the new client champions would be sorted by the new classifications (see the link) rather than the old ones, but that looks like it isn't going to happen.

Yea, Riot really fumbled the ball on keeping their champions neatly updated on who they are.

Which is stupid because everyone calls them Assassins. Hell, the last update was the "Assassin" update, not the Slayer/Skirmisher update.

Which I think is horribly incorrect tbh. Most Fighters aren't that great at diving. It's normally Slayers and Vanguards. Most "Divers", as defined by Riot, often have short range or can be body blocked by tanks. Not to mention tat once they blow their initiation ability they haven have little mobility left over. Vi is probably the only exception as she can jump in with R then escape with her Q.

Which, IMO, is really all just nit picky ways of saying "They kill stuff". Meanwhile, Marksmen don't have a single classification of their own...guess they all play the exact same?

The utility mages are part of a seperate class called the Controllers.

Tbh I tent to find that Enchanters and Disruptors are so closely related that you might as well just call them what they really are. Mages who bring utility to a team. Aka, the Support Mage. Some have more utility, some bring more protection, but none of them can burst as hard as the likes of say...Brand or Xerath.

I like your marksmen classifications. Definitely a distinction between the AD casters and the atk speed ADCs.

Yea, Riot really dropped the ball on these guys.

The tank section"s pretty good too.

It was your "The Definitive Difference Between a Tank and a Juggernaut." that inspired me to try and make this list. :) It really does shock me that Riot is still so bad at categorizing champions after all these years...

Overall I give this guide an A for effort. :)

Thanks. :D

Aww, thanks! It's an honor to inspire someone else's thread.

As for your concerns about the classes, I made a thread a while ago about each of the classes and their definitions and examples.

Here: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/Yr6W3wyr-champion-classes-a-guide

It's better than me trying to explain it here.

Also, Riot's system works becuase it allows for hybrids.

Done251 votes

A lot better than mine, though there are a few classifications that I'd dispute.

Hybrids are good and interesting. But sometimes Riot forgets what they're doing and they end up making a champion who can do EVERYTHING. Like Lee Sin the: ranged melee tanky DPS assassin mage tank support jungler.

TyrekGoldenspear1 votes

Thing is, these classifications were made 6 months ago.

Long after Lee Sin. :P

This isn't helpful; this would actually be rather confusing for new players, especially when Riot made their own guide to subclasses which is much more accurate. You have a lot of misinformation here - claiming that an overarching assassin class branches into skirmishers and slayers, when slayers are the overarching class, and your two subclasses are entirely wrong. You talk about a supposed fighter class called "duelists", then as your examples you list champions who are all juggernauts. You act like traditional supports are just a subclass of mages.

I don't know why you made this post when so much of it is false, and when Riot did it much better themselves: http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/game-updates/gameplay/dev-blog-classes-subclasses http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/developer-corner/3A5uuBw7-champion-subclass-list

Done251 votes

Because their list is crappy and inconsistent. They have THREE classifications for mages, but marksmen are just...marksmen? Like, really Riot? That's the best you could do? Anyways, now that I'm at a real computer and not half asleep I'm going to fix the list up a bit. I blame the Assassin mix up because Riot called it the "Assassin update", rather than the "Slayer Update".

ProtestantCaesar1 votes

But... the assassin update was about assassins.

With the exception of Ekko, every champion in the assassin update is actually a Slayer-assassin. Other than Ekko, they ignored the Slayer-skirmishers. I guess they didn't need the update much.

Anonagon1 votes

There are three subclasses for Mages because all three make sense, and there aren't any for Marksmen because even the most radically different marksmen all perform the exact same role of sustained physical DPS. I imagine in the future they'll divide the Marksman class, probably into spell-weavers and straight autoattackers, but for now there's not much point.

The assassin update was for assassin champions, the subclass, not slayers as a whole. Skirmishers (who are differentiated from assassins by being sustained damage dealers with less powerful disengage but more defensive options) were not included, except Ekko who is debatably more of a Skirmisher. (Riot themselves put him as a Skirmisher on their list, but that was when bruiser Ekko was the dominant Ekko build)

A lot of this is just blatantly incorrect lol. I got like 3 paragraphs in. assassin is a subclass of slayer. and you mixed a bunch of shit up. and just got a ton of stuff wrong. you should really read the ACTUAL subclass list before doing something like this [zombie-brand-mindblown]

Done251 votes

Yea, I blame the "Assassin" update for confusing the heck out of me. Thanks Riot.

You forgot to add in the extra tab section of the 10 champion types known as: "The bullshit overpowered champion list."

Vayne suppose to be a 'marksmen / slayer' but she can just stack Q to instantly become a burst damage champion and low cooldown and tumble and able to crit with the empowered damage lets her massacre any marksmen champion's health bar with such ease, her W lets her bust anything whether it stacks armor, health or raw damage, it doesn't matter because those 3rd hit procs with her natural itemization towards attack speed. Even if it was not true damage it would still be a broken skill to deal 6% max hp as bonus damage every third hit.

Literally, Vayne's actual role type is more along the lines of: Marksmen / Assassin / Slayer / 'Burster' (silly generalization term for any champion regardless of AD or AP can dish out huge amounts of damage in near instant volumes that make Assassins and Burst mages look pathetic at how much damage said champion dish out with only a few abilities compared to the full ability/combo/setup rotations a lot of Assassins and Burst mages rely on for their own damage impact).

Yasuo , silly mobility with strong exploiting of Easy criticals that due to little attention to him, had let him creep into a tank till he finally got a proper nerf to kill his damage while tank building. But did nothing substantial to tighten up how much breathing room in the power his standard rush item 3086 and be able to out'maneuver many champion types, even more so once he picks up item 3046 and then can just damage blast almost any champion who isn't a super tank in health mostly or can't ruin his kit via item 3814 since item 3102 blocks the next ability, not the next CC(especially since he can just use E or Q before tornado stock to cancel it out), once item 3031 is picked up.

Syndra, silly broken mage with strong damage and easy harass power in mid lane.

Sion , overly broken top lane harass and sometimes jungle but only needs to stack health items and then can just screw around with you even when he dies to just revenge kill you with add on max health autos, enhanced attack speed while in 'revenge death mode' and even mini move speed buffs he can use 3 of them too during the period.

List goes on but you should get my point, champions like those UTTERLY break the meaning of champion roles because they either outperform way beyond what their role is intended todo or just can do so much more then what their field should not cover.

nah, you cant just group in supports with mages imo.

not the same thing. riot recategorized them into enchanters for good reason. there is a large difference between the old support class (now enchanters) champions like soraka, janna, nami, and lulu and the mage class.

Done251 votes

Not really? They're squishy ranged champions who build large amounts of AP and CDR to power their abilities. Veigar just makes HP bars go down while Soraka makes them go up. That's why Veigar is a Burst Mage while Soraka is a Support Mage.

How would you classify the likes of Lux, Morgana, and Orianna? They're all Enchanter/Disruptors who often go mid due to their potent wave clear/CC.

some champions have overlap between mage and support, like there is overlap between classes on other champions. youre right, that champions like lux, morgana, orianna are utility mages. theyre mainly mages with enough utility sprinkled in, that they can function as secondary supports on a team.

similar to how sion has overlap between tank and fighter.

the main difference between a mage and a support is, that mages are focused on damage, and are very self reliant. supports focus almost entirely on utility and on enabling their allies. their base damage is usually low, and their utility even higher than that of support mages. they have often elements in their kits that dont even function without an ally nearby. like zileans passive, or sorakas w heal.
