Cho'Gath's W... (And Morde's E while we're at it)

So I was watching my friend play mid Kat against a Cho, rough matchup, but he avoided dying by shunpoing to tower to dodge q, Cho walks up just before recall ends, my buddy tp's to base, and a quarter second later he's dead. He looks at the death recap: Feral Scream killed him.

So basically my question is this: Why does Cho's W hit you even if you get out before he finishes casting it? What kind of skillshot cannot be dodged? The same thing goes with Mordekaiser's E from what I've seen.

Is this intentional? I feel like it reduces the opportunity for counterplay.

The damage is applied on cast, not during the animation. So if they are in range when it is cast, it doesnt matter where they are once the animation finishes, they take damage.

I guess my point is, the only way to not get hit by these abilities is to stay out of range or hope they miss. If you have the reaction time to flash during the windup, you should be able to dodge them.

Darius E works the same way also.

If you're in range when its initially cast, it will hit you when the animation ends regardless of position.
