This may be a silly question but when do I build my defensive item?

I know that you go first item, boots.... but what do I build after that? When do I sacrifice getting another damage item to get my survivability? I know ADC's don't bother unless its a GA as the last item, but what about fighters and or JGs.

When you need it.

As a damage based character it varies a lot. if you fall behind early game it's generally a good idea to build an off-tank item (Maw, Zhonya's, etc.) If you're doing really well, winning your fights, have three or four items then finishing with some tank is good so that you don't fall off. I know some assassins (Ekko, Kha'zix) can build full tank and still deal a high base damage. League is a highly situational game in most cases, IMO, one of the most important skills you can have is knowing when to build what items instead of going with default builds.

Depends. Second, most of the time. Trinity->tank or Jungle item -> tank. If you are snowballing you can get it third.

But really, it depends on champion and matchup.

When you need it on that champion. "But when is that?" You'll figure that out with practice; the most important thing to learn in League is to change appropriately depending on the state of the match. But what this means is there are no single accurate answer for that. No start Xth item. None of this build Y at X item, none of that "follow this build I got from MOBAfire" BS. You just have to learn the game.

TLDR

ignore laning itemization

Fighters and junglers need to be scary enough to threaten killing the enemy carries.

there's a balance: -enough defense to survive and get to carries.
-enough damage built to kill carries

practice helps you find this sweet spot in different situations

I like to whenever I need one to prevent an enemy from killing me in one little combo. And some are just good in certain lane match-ups. So like if you're an AP mid vs a Zed, highly consider a Zhonya's unless you think you can live even without it. Or if you're an AD top vs an AP, you can consider Maw but I wouldn't get it if you can get ahead enough to just kill them faster than they can kill you. But if you're somewhat behind it can be a great item. And when the laning phase is over, consider if there's any fed enemy that can just instakill you if you don't build any defensive items. If there is, it's likely a good idea to build some, unless you think there's some way you can stay effective while dodging that enemy.

But really, there's no magic guide for how you can figure out what to build easily. You really have to just get good at the game and be able to tell how fights are going to play out and use that information to tell what is going to help out the most in that fight. And even that can be deviated from if you happen to have just the right amount of gold to buy something that's almost as good.
