Why I dislike Yasuo

Dr Poro··142 votes·7,863 views

Yasuo is not the strongest champ, his winrate and performance are average, but he's the champ I hate to play against the most. Even when I'm a melee champ without projectiles (but most when I'm a mage with projectile skillshots of course).

The reason is that you can't outplay Yasuo. Yasuo himself is the playmaker. He outplays you, or he fails to outplay you. A perfect Yasuo player wins EVERY matchup, even against other players who play perfectly. He can dodge every skillshot, get in first and last hit consistently in a skirmish, block important projectiles and chooses when to fight and when not.

I know most people don't have issues against Yasuo. But that's because most players aren't in the skill brackets where they actually meet good Yasuo players. As said before, Yasuo outplays or fails to outplay. If he fails to outplay, he's total garbage. If he succeeds to outplay consistently, he'll win.

I'm not saying there's no counterplay. His tornado is a skillshot that can be dodged, and it's important to do so in lane. However, the problem is that outplaying this isn't rewarding enough. First of all, he can hold onto his tornado for 10 seconds. That means 10 seconds not getting into his dash range. If you do, he'll just dash on you and Q around him to auto hit. And that's problem 2. When he uses his Q during the dash, there's not way to dodge it. The only part of his kit that allows counterplay, has a trick to prevent any counterplay. All you need to do is wait for the next minion wave to arrive and E E E E Q R. (Yes, I'm making it sound simpler than it is. It requires quite some micro skills to succeed at this consistently.)

Tl;dr playing against Yasuo feels like you are just an NPC for the Yasuo player to beat or fail against. If you beat him, it's because Yasuo was not good enough to beat you. Not because you were good enough to beat him. That's how it feels.

Sums up my thoughts on that cancer very nicely.

My problem with Yasuo is that he's just... so absolutely ridiculous sometimes. It's almost to the point where i can't tell if I was outplayed or if it's just nonsensical bullshit. Not to mention his kit already has some ridiculous shit in it. Every skill has at least one extra passive or addition besides windwall. like....????

I mean, come on:

  • His passive is a shield, scaling with level, and also gets double crit chance
  • it's one thing for his regular cast Q's to crit, but they let the fucking 3rd cast tornado crit. Which leads into an ult. That's absurd.
  • His dashes have almost no CD (especially at rank 5), he gets extra damage for using it, and can make an AOE knockup when combo'd with Q. ( dont get me wrong, I think it's a cool ability, but jesus christ)
  • His fucking ult. This thing is just... a whole can of worms. I need sub-bullets for this shit.
    • Huge damage. 200/300/400 + 150% bonus AD.
    • Can hit the whole team. (granted, this isn't super easy)
    • Point and click, pretty high range for melee.
    • The CD on this is so ridiculously fucking low. Look at rank 3 with no CDR. jesus.
    • Basically is damaging CC in itself. Not to mention he can hit a bunch of people himself, while also having high synergy with ANYONE who has displacement CC (knockups, knockback, knock aside, suspension, pull/flip) which is honestly quite a lot of champs
    • Gives 50% bonus armor pen for 15 seconds. 15 fucking seconds.

You only pointed out his strengths. You didn't mention that he is a glass cannon, or the fact that his ult is a skillshot. You also didn't mention that you can wait out his shield, and then unload on him. HIs wind wall has a long cooldown(24 seconds) Or to counter his E, don't stand by your minions like an idiot.(seriously his tornado goes through minions, there is no advantage by standing next to them)

It Hertz When IP2 votes

His ult is not a skillshot. His ability that knocks up the target, thus unlocking the ability to ult them, is a skillshot. There's a difference.

It's the main reason I dislike playing VS Yasuo. If I beat him, I feel like it's because the Yasuo player was bad, not because I outplayed him.

I don't understand why they buffed him recently tbh. He was fine the way he was. Now his popularity is peeking again and he is annoying to play against regardless of match-up.

Once the player mastered Yasuo, there is no champion he can't beat up.

Imo, there's one skill in particular that makes Yasuo oppressive, especially post laning phase, and that's his windwall, after all there is nothing to make you feel so useless playing adc as Yasuo passing wind.

Joke aside, there is a reason why he's so highly contested in pro play, he has spectacular damage, but so does Yi and many other MADC, but his mobility is circumstancial, unlike say, Tryndameres whirlwind or Rivens Broken Wings/Valor. So I don't think that's the main reason.

His ult does alot of damage and has extremely high cc potential, but alot of champs have ults with very high cc potential and damage.

His kit comes together and flows really well, honestly so do alot of other champions also, albiet not as well.

No boys, not saying this is the universalt truth, but I believe what sets Yasuo aside from everyone else is his windwall, just think about it, the ability to negate that much with one single skill. While it's definately not spammable, it doesn't have a massive cd and can reliably be used at least once in every tf or skirmish.

That's exacly why he's so contested. It's not his Steel Tempest, his double passives or sweeping blade pro teams really want him for, not even his ult, it's his windwall, an ability that perhaps more than any in this game has the potential to turn just about any teamfight as it has the potential to negate literally infinite ammounts of damage of cc.

For a champ that seems to cause alot of frustration and from a balancing perspective, I believe that's where he needs to be adjusted. Be it having lower duration or a less wide field so it leaves more room for counterplay.

Dr Poro5 votes

His windwall is definitely what makes him unique (apart from Braum ) but even without it, he still wins most of the 1v1 fights. And I think that's a bit overloaded. Just as they said about Rek'sai having so much utility, when they're also one of the best in fighting, there's not much reason to pick others.

Caytheles4 votes

Love how they give yasuo (mid laner) a more op version of the same ability as a support, who has to take care of himself AND an adc. Logic

SlaktarTasken3 votes

Well, what so say, Riot seems to have a special spot in their hearts for champs that are toxic and frustrating to play against.

To defeat a playmaker, you need another playmaker.

CubedJustice5 votes

This match up is super rough for Yasuo, yeah. Your only real option is to poke minions to clear.

KatCraft4 votes

Yasuo actually shits on Azir you just need to play the lane correctly. Azir hates champions that can gap close to him easily, Yas can do this.

DokiDokiTodoroki5 votes

If he does that early game minions should hurt him more. Post-6 Azir has the Shurima? Best spacing tool in the game basically.

The problem is not that Yasuo can't be beaten. The problem is that it seems to depend more on Yasuo's lack of skill than it depends on your own skill. Yes, there are other champs that have this feeling (like Ahri), but in a way lesser extend. Yasuo's plays are far greater than anyone else's. (Yes even Riven fades away compared to him. Btw Riven has a ton of outplay potential for the opponent.)

Stars Shaper7 votes

But the I would ask if you think that Yasuo design is bad or if there should be more champion with the same kind of design where it really becomes a challenge to both use and fight them.

Dr Poro50 votes

His design is not necessarily bad. It's just that he's currently unfun to play against thanks to his little counterplay. There seems too be no window of opportunity to go against him (except for his wind wall if you're a mage, but then he only uses it when you use one of your own important skill so you can't fight yourself. Unless the Yasuo screwed up, but once again, that's him being bad.)

I feel like his dashes are too swift and/or the uptime of his stacks (10 seconds!) are too long. His design doesn't need to be completely changed for him to be a healthy champ. Just some tweaks.

junglerboy167 votes

you can't outplay Yasuo

Eh, that's not really that accurate.

I'm not saying there's no counterplay.

Um... you just said you can't outplay him. Being able to outplay a champion is literally one and the same thing as being able to counterplay a champion. You have to decide, can you outplay him or can't you?

I believe you can indeed outplay him, often with relative ease. The single largest flaw in your reasoning is that you assume that outplaying Yasuo is all up to him making the mistake, and that attitude is what makes your gameplay experience passive ("feels like you are just an NPC for the Yasuo player to beat or fail against."). If you take a proactive approach against Yasuo, he is in fact very easy to outplay (depending on your skill level obviously). He has his tornado up? bait it out. He throws up wind wall to block a projectile? Reposition to keep hitting him. He keeps comboing off of minions to E>Q>R you? Freeze under your tower, or aggro the first creeps to clump your own more quickly.

Whether or not Yasuo is a champion all about outplaying or not outplaying you or whether he is able to be outplayed is all functionally dependent on your state of mind when playing against him.

Sona Ping11 votes

The problem is that you seem to have failed to notice that "outplay" and "counter-play" are two different words. Seriously, he even explains this.

Come on, man. Nobody likes having to write posts like this.

The biggest problem that I have with yasuo is that even if you win lane, he'll still be able to kill you once he gets Shiv. No matter how much you try and press your advantage, he can just dodge things and wind wall. There is no real way to keep him down long enough that he'll make more than 1 kill worth of a mistake.

MLDzXnRRR3 votes

Playing vs yasuo is more interesting than playing vs full tanks who kill you as fast as Yasuo would...

Dr Poro26 votes

True. Luckily, there's no tank that does this. If you're talking about juggernauts (they're not tanks), atleast you can stay away from them and/or choose when to fight yourself.

Garen item 3742 item 3009 item 3071

haha

Dr Poro4 votes

Most champs have a slow/snare/stun or a dash for themselves, which should keep him away from you. But yeah, atm he's a bit too strong.

Wimbledofy1 votes

Since when is garen not a tank? Only dmg item i need on garen is black cleaver, and maybe steraks. But those both give a good chunk of hp.

doombotMECHA4 votes

since he's a JUGGERNAUT. jk, the real difference is that tanks normally have gapclosers and cc in return for piddly damage. think maokai.

Gorgannan2 votes

Tanks primary goal is to lock down the enemy team with CC, and they are not the primary damage dealers.

Garen's LAST goal is to lock down the enemy team with CC, he wants to use his base damages to kill someone who builds no resistances fast. If he gets his hands on the ADC, he can do as much damage to them as an ADC can to a tank, so he ends up being a primary damage dealer.

Fowus3 votes

Azir counters yasuo, whenever he ults you just ult his back or do your combo, Riven also screws him over pretty hard

SlaktarTasken18 votes

The issue isn't the lack of counterpicks, I consistenly destroy Yasuo with a range of different champs, the isse is the lack of counterplay.

Yasuo wins or loses lane at champion select almost entirely.

Lord Boltrix2 votes

I have to agree, considering the only thing that can win against a Yasuo in lane is something that is tanky enough to survive his burst and can in turn quickly squash him with little effort if he tries to get close.

Hm... I think they have a name for that, they're called Juggernauts.

RasCaelestis4 votes

Because some people have standards.

Seriously, though... I'm not a fan of playing assassins. I see the appeal, but I personally don't like it. I prefer mages, followed closely by tanks. I understand that certain classes are stronger based on the meta, but I should be able to at least pick a few from each and not have it completely outclassed by a single champion.

As the OP said, there are very few champions that can beat Yas in a 1v1. He blocks ADC and Mage attacks with Wind Wall, can melt tanks thanks to his ult's 50% Armor Pen, can out-damage other assassins thanks to his crit and shield passives, and can outmaneuver and out-damage other melee carries and fighters.

Edit: Was kidding about the 'standards' thing. Should have been more clear about that. :P

doombotMECHA3 votes

yeah, tank main here. I just...I can't stand the idea of being so squishy. also, yas is bullshit because his rank 3 ult has no opprutunity cost. he can ult me (i was tk that game), fail to kill but force me away from his inhib turret for a sec, have ult back for a tf, and then have it back to force me away AGAIN when i get back to the enemy inhib. (I lost about half my health as a full tank both times fyi)
