Losing 5v4s

Since preseason began I've been in several games where a member of the enemy team quits early, and if my memory serves me right I have lost every one of those games. As long as we don't snowball too far ahead early, the enemy team will just passively outscale us by levelling up quicker to the point where they are EXTREMELY stronger than anyone on my team. I think this issue was balanced out last season by the fact that you gained experience more quickly when you were behind the average level of players in the game, but that's no longer a mechanic, so the level difference gradually becomes too great in 5v4's if you can't close the game out in about 20 minutes. Has anybody else had problems with this?

It feels way easier to win a regular 5v5.

I've struggled against 5v4's too. Your opponents have more potential kills, and gain more experience in comparison to you. You have the early game advantage, they have the mid game advantage, and you then get the late game advantage. If their 5th reconnects and you don't take advantage of their low level and gold and punish them, then they'll gain another step ahead of you. Teamwork will have a huge impact on how a game goes, regardless of whether you have 4 or 5 players.

Sorry about the belated reply I forgot I made this thread. I just want to add one thought to my original post. If teams can figure out how to use that to their advantage then they can purposely have a player afk for part of the match to gain an advantage. That just doesn't seem right to me

So what you're suggesting is... for someone to purposely risk punishment for what you view as an advantage. Even if they're all friends and purposely had one of them go afk, the opposing team could still report them for being afk, and they could receive punishment. Personally, when I recognize that one of their players has been missing for a game and see that player return later in that game, I become a massive bully towards them (not verbally). I don't let them free farm. I kill them with every chance I get. They become a free kill, as they are so far behind at the point of their return. I take advantage of them whenever possible, and use them as a source of extra coin. That's how you're able to turn the tide, and that's how I see them.
