@Riot: If the tech were available, would you make a 2-player Champion ala Cho'Gall?

Cho'gall

I can't think of any other MOBA that has a hero who plays like Cho'Gall. He requires 2 players (which requires you to be in a premade, so no hostages with randoms), something that is truly unique among MOBAs.

I assume Riot doesn't have the tech to pull a "Cho'Gall" off, but if they did, would they do it? I'd certainly love to see one in the game.

I speak for myself here, but this is a question I ask myself often. Would I like to play a cho'gall-esq champ? IMO no, the bifurcated play style of chogall isn't really fun to me. But the silly part of me says "why not?". Lesson being? You never know x). I'd really love to see an Invoker style champ in League, but again the massive complications it would introduce lol

Here's another question to ask yourself: How would you enjoy playing AGAINST Cho'Gall? Would he introduce some totally new gameplay, meta, etc?

Honestly? I'd love to play against a cho'gall cause thats one less champ on the map. HOTS maps are usually smaller (2 lanes rather than 3) and size wise smaller as well. On summoners rift the reduction of an extra champ on the rift would make my life as the opponent so much easier. Split push comps (jax, trundle, etc) would be insta wins against any team with a Cho'gall. However, thats really not that fair so take that opinion with a grain of salt x)

darkdill1 votes

Yeah, but imagine if that Cho'Gall were the jungler. He'd be taking Dragons and Rift Heralds with no contest.

Plus using a split-push comp wouldn't automatically win against Cho'Gall; he could take map objectives like Baron and then push you down.

And if he were the jungler, he could easily invade and your own jungler would not be able to stop him.

I think this Cho'Gall would have to be a bot lane champion. If you had him as toplaner, jungler, or midlaner, then your team would either have one player 1v2 in the bot lane, or an open lane.

Depends. Some maps are very large like Blackheart Bay and Warhead Junction. In those kind of maps, Cho'Gall is pretty weak. But in smaller maps like Towers of Doom and Tomb of the Spider Queen, a competent Cho'Gall can single-handedly wreck the enemy team

darkdill1 votes

Hey, how do you think Chogall would work in Nexus Blitz? Smaller maps tend to be better for him. ;)

do you have the technology to make a Vacuum ability?

like an ability that slowly pulls enemies towards the center of it and they have to rapidly click to try and escape it?

Its weird in all of our 140+ champs we have yet to see a champion with this kind of ability.

Diana e? Viktor upgraded grav field? Its not exact but close :)

It would be neat to see a spell with a treadmill effect that slowly drags enemy units in one direction, or towards a point. AFAIK all displacement spells currently in the game disable champions, at least momentarily.

There's a very basic disconnect here between hots and League. Forced repositioning is not a disable in hots. It is in League. Even something not-very-good in hots like D.Va's charge would be absurdly overpowered in League with that difference in 'what is considered hard CC' taken into account.

I suspect the reason we haven't seen this is that this isn't really a fun skill to play against. League is designed as an intuitive, low-skill-floor game when possible, and having a single ability that effectively functions solely as an actions-per-minute test isn't in keeping with that design.

^ not to mention a simple mouse macro would make the ability useless...

Another question on a similar topic: If the tech were available, would Riot consider making a "Murky" Champion?

Murky is so much fun to play as and play against, simply because his annoyance factor is so endearing. Even if you kill him, he'll be back for more shortly unless you kill that egg of his!

TBH I can't stand Murky/Cho'gall/Abathur... playing with them always feels like a man down... and playing against them is just annoying. The only people that enjoy them.... play them.

In LoL terms Cho'Gall would be something no one could deal with. You'd have a mobile full tank with silly high HP with an invulnerable full AP mage on his back. Also double stopwatch? A diving tank with Zhonya's? It wouldn't work.

Murky is basically just Fizz anyway.

Abathur is the only vaguely possible one I see.... could work as a support. But he'd fuck laning phase hard,,... unless he could only hop bodies with his ulti... or after a champ died.

Kindred 's design would have been perfect for a champion like this (and I'm 100% sure the designing team envisaged this idea). We got Xayah and Rakan now but they barely have any synergy aside of their passive. I'd really love someday at least 2 champions having a real synergy (think about Kalista spear, but being one champion only, "cut in half")

HotS supports it without devolving into the character being a hypercarry that your team has to completely play around... I assume anyway? Because that would suck. It would be like Kog but more exaggerated.

Since LoL is about building up your character by acquiring resources over the course of the game, and your allies can support you in that goal, a champion that takes up two champion slots would need to be extremely powerful to be justified as a pick, which would force it into a hypercarry role, thus my concern.

Sure, but than you leave a lane empty, or bot lane in a 2v1. Theres still a pressure point to be applied and taken advantage.

Khristophoros1 votes

My concern is more that I would not enjoy playing on the same team because it would reduce my agency as his teammate. I would be forced to play around him because he'd be such an exaggerated hypercarry.

darkdill1 votes

Cho'Gall's hardly a hyper-carry. He can pretty much carry himself on his own even when he's heavily outnumbered.

Khristophoros1 votes

I mean in the context of LoL when a character is really strong usually the optimal strategy for the team is to play around that character to feed them as much gold as possible.

HotS escapes from that problem by not having gold or items.

darkdill6 votes

You could always have Cho'Gall be the bot laner. [slayer-jinx-wink]

I don't think riot would release a champ that can only be played only by duos. If they release him as I suspect they would you'd get even fewer support players because no one wants to be forced to play Chogall or they get a troll player on him and their KDA tanks as a response to something they literally had no control of.

He'd also be unplayable in ARAM and who knows what would happen in 3s.

Warding would be a nightmare with such a champ because the guy with the support item is stuck doing what the ADC wants.

IDK how they'd balance his health pool and mana pool.

What happens if the other player disconnects or rage quits?

TBH, the person playing B*tch would need an overpowered and potentially kit to compensate for lack of agency and I don't think riot would let that happen.

Frankly, I think Kalista is the closest we'll ever get to this idea: a separate champ who mechanically gets a bonus being tethered to someone else.

2 player champ confirmed?

EROTIC RAID BOSS1 votes

Riot talked about this a while ago. Basically what they said was they don't think they'd ever make a champ 2 players controlled together, and didn't think it would fit well in league. But they did have an answer to Cho- something special for duo partners. That was xayah and rakan

La Bello2 votes

imo Xayah and Rakan kit was a failure.

the synergy between them feels so forced rather than actual fluid and good kit design. Having Xayah literally just deal MORE damage when Rakan is nearby is so lazy. same with the double dash range on Rakan E.

I hope someday they get just a small rework that makes them much more Alley-Oopish with one another.

EROTIC RAID BOSS1 votes

I don't think they wanted the difference to be significant. I don't think they're a failure at all but I think you gotta look at the whole picture. 1, both champions are fun and very popular additions to the game. 2, the way they interact with each other and talk to each other is unprecedented and it's a lot of fun. 3, they do have natural synergy too, especially between their ults

I think the idea of a "dual champ" is fun to explore though. Not a Xayah and Rakan one...but more like how Kled is. But make it so you can "tap in and out" like a wrestler would. One champ is maybe tanky and the other is damage. And when they come in, they have their own passive skill.

G0LUM0LU1 votes

I think it would be really cool to have a champion that requires two players but i agree they would have to be some form of hybrid between support and adc just to keep the laning balance. Another cool character in hots is the lost vikings who are 3 champions contolled by one player. how would that work in lol, would they level up seperatly or together. kind of a different discussion but cool non the less
