Why is Nullifying Orb not Adaptive? I could see it running on Mages that build armor.

taleofsonata··88 votes·2,730 views

I personally think Nullifying Orb should have an Adaptive scaling that could either defend against Magic or Armor based on the user armor or Magic Resist, (which is higher). Think about the numbers of mages live that could be saved if Riot did a change.

They said they tried it in testing. They claimed it was either "Essential for any lane, or useless, depending on the numbers." something like that. They should have made a physical damage counterpart, but put their respective shielding on the +5 armor/magic resist runes in resolve, then get rid of the AD/AP scaling. Obviously getting rid of the current secondary bonuses for those two runes

I think something like that would've given room for a more interesting Sorcery rune instead of mini-hexdrinker.

Having the shielding effect on Iron Skin and Mirror Shell seems like an interesting idea and helps making them more different from Conditioning.

what about AR rune removal? or lethality buff?

Sun Wu Ryuumoku1 votes

lethality wasn't really buffed... we could start with 30 lethality ("some"squishy lost around ten armor, and we have sudden impact, its still a loss of free letha)... Thats said u can start the game with iron skin if armor is an issue. Tabi is stronger than ever and still c*ckblock lethality (as before preseason).

lethality items got buffed (now they give 20 lethality each),as you said sudden impact gives you the lethality that you lost (or almost) when the armor got reduced

i dont't think i will ever take a tank tree just for this 5 armor as mage or ADC (the targets of AD assassins),it's useless compared to the power that you lose, iron skin is nice only when you are a bruiser or tank that can stack armor tabi will never get picked by a mage unless they are 5 AD with 2/3 ADC,they lose too much for not to buying item 3020

I don't agree... u don't lose anything. As adc u take precision tree as main... but u can adapt the secondary. And here's conditioning is great even for adc (in old mastery tree, many would take the one buffing ur resist when damaged).

yeah... it depend of the game. Its same for assassins when they're forced to build hexdrinker to survive.

i agree, but the only problem is adc's would mass spam it, same reason why armor and ad items can't exist. ADC abuse more items just cus they are meant to do damage from range.

Guardian angel?

That is an exception because it is bad to build as a first item, doesn't actually give a lot of armor, and lacks a passive that protects from physical damage (to clarify, item 3156's passive gives you a magic shield, while GA gives nothing like that). While you can argue that GA is useful against AD assassins by making them waste their cooldowns, it still isn't that great when it comes to counter them. Against ADCs it is even worse because they can just continue to auto-attack you (especially against Caitlyn which can place a trap under you before you revive).

Ehh it's not that good because domination is better for ADCs. Otherwise they'd be going into resolve

Anyways at the first few levels ADCs have more MR than armour I think, so OP's suggestion is okay (though I'd prefer if it were based on most damage dealt from the champ)

Chembaron Yamada1 votes

Resolve doesn't work well with ADCs, since the stuff in there all scales with defensive stats, which ADCs don't purchase (armor, MR, health).

Sorcery doesn't have that problem. The Nullifying Orb scales with offensive stats (Bonus AD, AP), which would give ADCs more defense based on a stat they already buy. Additionally, the sorcery tree offers damage as well for the ADC to utilise, unlike resolve (examples: Gathering Storm, Celerity, Scorch and so on).

I can definitely see this becoming a balance problem. And Riot already thought about making it adaptive, it got stated that this problem accured: Nullifying Orb pretty much became mandatory.

AirKingNeo6 votes

We have an armor AD item. It's called GA. Bruisers build it more than ADCs.

Maybe the reason we don't have an armor AD item is that it would make bruiser vs bruiser matchups extremely lopsided?

Enough of mages please. They have been perma picked in lcs already.

Mages are the only true form of Magic DPS of course they would be picked but seeing other things than mages mid is the problem. Because mages has a huuuuuge champion pool, if that class is replaced thats literally 40% of the champions in league.

LordGeovanni1 votes

if mages are 40 % of the champions in league fighters 55% and tanks 38% math doesnt work out

Heard this before, it was annoying then and it's annoying now. Let's take a look, shall we?

item 3143 - 60 armor item 3075 - 80 armor item 3025 - 65 armor

item 3065 - 55 MR item 3001 - 55 MR item 3194 - 55 MR

The reason why we don't have adaptive for armor and MR is because players regularly build both. And just like AD and AP, armor and MR are not equals. Armor is way more abundant. Way more relevant. Way more useful and important and it needs to be much higher.

There is no choice here, that's why adaptive does not function for defensive stats.

Shablagoo4 votes

Man dont bother mage mains will never understand this they think item 3135 is useless because ad champions have lethality, when the counter is simply to build more armor.

Violet Fields1 votes

Armor ---> item 3147 True Damage

Nice Joke, I got deleted as having 300 armor as Veigar, even though I had 300 stacks one game at 800 AP.

Shablagoo1 votes

........No just no man cmon dont blatantly lie to man like really? Should me the game, I want to see the score your items and what zed built this is not true.

Theorex6 votes

Wait you failed to mention a few core aspects to the sheer numbers.

HP is more effective against mages than it is against AD's.

You fail to mention that EVERY one of those MR items give HP as well.

The only one of those three AD items that gives HP is Randuins.

Now if you are wondering why HP + MR more effective than HP + Armor

AD's can auto you for the AD that they have (minus the Armor Reduction %)

While Mages can Auto You (Unless it is Ziggs, Ori, or Zoe. With special cases of Spell Procs such as Viktor Q) They have the base amount of AD they normally would have had Reduced by Armor Reduction % with no armor pen.

Any mage Aside from Azir, Cass, Karthus, and Ryze. Have a set number of damage that they can do. For Any Given timeframe.

So a full build Syndra can only do Q W E R Auto Damage In the time frame of 4 Seconds.

Meanwhile any AD champion can do Q W E R Auto Damage in the same time frame. But if that AD has more than 1.5 Attack Speed. Its more of Q W E R Auto Auto. Before any bonus auto attack resets (such as Jax W or Trundle Q).

So the fact that you are not mentioning that MR + HP is more effective against mages is bullshit. A mage isn't suddenly going to get another 300-500 damage in that time frame from another auto or crit.

That is why mages are Front Loaded with damage now. Because if they don't get all of their damage out first they won't be able to get any of their damage out at all before a ADC or Zed or Talon or Rengar or Kha or Jax or Anyone that has burst can 1 shot them. Its problematic in itself.

ADC get deleted by Assassins and mages, mages get deleted by ADCs Assassins. Assassins get deleted by Mages and ADCs. Its just whenever Riot feels like this it the flavor of the patch. They stopped following the traditional Assassins > Mages > ADC > Tank > Assassin.

NineTailedMystic1 votes

Thornmail gives HP nowadays.

Theorex1 votes

Does it? I only play mages. So I wouldn't actually know that. I just know that I hate that item now because I also occasionally play trundle.

The Yetii Rider1 votes

The fact that HP is so useful against mages is WHY Nullifying Orb applies to magic damage. And, incidentally, why we don't have an AD item 3155 . Shields are very effective against magic damage because magic damage is limited to a rotation, it doesn't keep coming once the mage has blown their load.

By the way, nothing you said in this post has anything to do with the reason why we don't have adaptive armor and MR, which is simply because we have more armor than MR on every item and so it would always favor armor and there would be no choice. Which was my point.

Theorex2 votes

Actually, mb I replied to the wrong person. I was going to talk to the person saying that mages dont want to accept Void Staff as an item, and i got the two combined in some sort of manner xD. I was tired af.

The Yetii Rider1 votes

No worries, mate, this reply system is weird sometimes.

Somebody Love Me1 votes

I agree that armor is more abundant, but it is definitely not more relevant.

MR is less abundant because you get more out of MR than you get from armor.

I can have a full armor build and unless I'm Rammus, Sej, Ornn, or Malphite, I will still get shredded, even more so if the enemy has a cleaver or last whisper. God forbid they get both.

Meanwhile, one maybe two MR items make a mage manageable, not to mention they also have really good passives with some champ synergies.

The Yetii Rider1 votes

Armor applies to - champion autos, champion spells that deal physical damage, dragon autos, most monster autos, most minion autos, tower shots.

MR applies to - champion spells that deal magic damage, some champion autos, many items that deal magic damage, baron autos, Gromp autos.

Armor is more relevant because it applies to more things, particularly because it allows you to dive towers. That's what I meant when I said it was more relevant.

Somebody Love Me1 votes

Ah I misunderstood the statement. My bad

PrinceOfStorms4 votes

Because it would make Riot's golden child role, the ADC, which can do no wrong, weaker, and we can't have that.

Isnt it adaptive. Adaptive is scaling with ad or ap not armor or magic resist

Chembaron Yamada5 votes

What he means is that he wants the shield not to always be a magic damage shield, but have the option to be an attack damage shield as well. Think Camille's passive.

LordGeovanni2 votes

I was completely aware what he wanted but i was pointing out what he said

Kurieko2 votes

Nullifying orb is so trash ive literally never seen the shield. I hear the sound, but not the shield. The amount is so pitiful its irrelevant.

Mhihnj9 votes

The shield gets consumed the moment it procs.

Kurieko3 votes

Yes because its utterly trash lol

a whopping 60 damage early game. Would rather take ulti hat if im not using mana.

MangelinaJolie1 votes

Downvoted for being true? Lol.

In a meta where there is overwhelming amounts of overkill damage that shield is negligible. It’s currently the worst in the sorcery tree.

Tomoe Gozen1 votes

Riot already answered this question on the boards. The point is that in general, if it's adaptive shield, it quickly becomes a problem as certain type of damage gets quickly in big numbers so the tiny shield that the Orb provides is less effective so you'd then have to have an actual shield's value to scale properly. It's something that quickly can get out of hand, meaning that the Orb can feel meaningful in providing that last bit of resistance to help you or be a completely useless rune if it doesn't scale right.

So Riot chose to keep it as a shield for magic damage only. AD assassins could've easily cut through this tiny shield from their scaling, not even accounting Lethality. Whereas Mpen isn't as easy of a stat to acquire.

wildfox991 votes

what about a shield vs all type of damage (the grey one) so everyone is happy?
