Let's Brainstorm About Champ Select Trolls

For like a month or two now, I've been practicing in normals almost exclusively, hardly playing any ranked at all. The other day, though, I decided to start playing ranked again. First match back, at 24 LP, I win handily and things are looking up. Next champ select, one guy (last pick) does nothing but whine about how he can't support, how he won't support. Once it gets down to him and support is all that's left, he seemed ready to Cho'Gath support, which kind of works... but he locked in Jax. Had to dodge, and lost interest in ranked for the night. Then the next day I try ranked, virtually the same thing happens. First pick locked in support, then** last pick** did. Had to dodge again, though luckily enough time had passed that it was only the 3 LP loss/5 minute wait. Once the wait is up, I play another ranked and, once again, win handily. Last night, my team starts arguing in champ select, one saying he's going to feed because he didn't get the champion he wanted and that the person who took said champion from him was going to feed. Didn't feel like risking it, so I dodged. Then this morning, we have this guy, who's 4th pick, telling us he's Master Yi jungle, no questions asked. First pick goes supp, I go top, 3rd pick goes Rek jungle... then this happens (see attachment). Yi refuses to go mid, and I don't even know what Gragas was doing. This time I clearly have to dodge because our team consists of 2 supports (unless Gragas mid with exhaust), 2 junglers, and 1 top lane.

And now, all I have to show for 2 straight wins is 12 LP because I've had to dodge 4/6 times I've attempted to play ranked for a combined LP loss of 19. People say the LP loss from dodging might as well be 0, especially since you lose less than you would for playing out the match, but I've now lost the same LP I probably would for a loss over the course of 4 failed champ selects. So I say, and I think we can all agree, something needs to be instituted to help counteract this. I've seen various suggestions thrown out, but I think it would be better if we all worked together to decide on what is the consensus best option and signal-boost that to Riot as much as we can. I just don't want to have my hard work undone by morons who troll or don't pay proper attention in champ select. It's hard enough climbing in bronze as is.

I agree. Trolls are honestly the worst. I feel like its going to be near impossible to do something about the trolls but at the very least we should be allowed a couple free dodges per day. A lot of people dont dodge because they dont want to be timed out and lose lp so they end up playing the game and losing more LP and time because someone was unattentive or trolling.

Even if Riot just modified the current system, making it so it goes from -0 LP on your first dodge to -3 LP on the second, that would be a notable improvement in my opinion. I'm not even playing ranked again until after work tomorrow so I'm able to dodge again for just the -3 LP. Because, given my recent luck, I have no interest in pushing said luck. Were your first dodge "free," I'd currently be sitting at 52 LP, double where I started, as opposed to 36. That would be acceptable.

its not a troll pick if the player actually plans to win. When they plan to lose, yes its a troll-pick. there is difference between "troll pick" and "non meta pick" so get used to it. I thankfully don't play ranked anymore because the playerbase in there are like soil samples from Chernobyl, they radiate a toxicity that is really bad for your health. I originally, and still do, play LoL because there is a potential for an exponential number of team comp variations and methods of play, so following a meta doesn't work for me because I get bored. I'll play along sometimes, but not all the time.

Picking Yi jungle when we already have a Rek jungle, and then refusing to go mid with him instead? Troll pick. Last-picking a champion (Jax) that you've never played before (I checked), that normally goes top or jungle, to support? Troll pick. I'm fine with non-meta picks as long as it's not too off-meta and the player has experience with it. But if someone locks in, say, Katarina jungle... I'm not wasting my time. There's going off-meta and then there's AP Jinx supp, which is a thing a friend of mine actually does, even though her chompers are the only part of her kit that scales off AP. Or, to use another example, we were in team builder and he was going to go "marksman" Dr. Mundo with me (Naut) bot lane. I didn't even realize until we somehow got a full team that he was planning to go bot, since I just assumed he was going top prior to noticing we had a top laner. Needless to say, I bailed on that nonsense, and it's situations like that where I feel we should have a better option than dodge, lose LP, and receive a brief ban from matchmaking.

Had to dodge Had to dodge again Didn't feel like risking it, so I dodged. This time I clearly have to dodge

You're the problem. The best option is to ban you so that 36 other people can actually play the damn game.

You don't have to dodge, you want to dodge. You're looking for reasons to dodge and say that you "had" to.

you lose less than you would for playing out the match

No, on second thought, if this is true, that's the real problem. It gives people actual incentives to dodge. The penalties for dodging should start out WORSE than a loss and increase from there for repeated dodges. With warning popups at each stage. The second dodge within 24 hours should stop you from queueing for anything other than customs and bots for at least an hour.

Nobody should ever think that they "need" to dodge a game because it's not as bad for them as playing and losing. Because if they played... they might find that they could win. And if not, at least they and 9 other people would be playing, and not going back into the queue.

P.S. If you're that picky about team comps, maybe you should try Team Builder? No penalty for leaving teams if the matchmaking hasn't started yet.

Okay, so dodging when you have two supports, two junglers (one of whom is toxic), and no adc or mid is "looking for a reason to dodge" to you? There is not a single thing wrong with not wanting to spend 30+ minutes in situations like that just on the off chance that I'll get lucky and pull out a victory, rather than lose 9 times as much LP as I would for a dodge.

Although I agree with your post - That Gragas was probably mid, not support. Gragas running Exhaust/Ignite would make Yasuo feel less than worthless. Had to throw that out there. Lol

I honestly haven't seen a Gragas do anything but jungle for months, so I honestly wasn't sure where he was going. The last time I saw Gragas mid, which I believe used to be his usual spot, was back when I first started last year. I've seen more Gragas supports than Gragas mids, surprisingly enough. Whatever the case may be, we were without an ADC and this guy who just had to Yi, even when we had a jungler already, wasn't even that good (43% win rate and something like 1.24 KDA). I know when a match isn't worth bothering with, and there was no way I was touching that one.

Agreed, I'd have dodged too - I dodge on average a game every other day in ranked. The -3 LP and 5 minute wait really is a better option than the 20+ minutes and 15+ LP loss when you have someone who has numerous 0-25 games in a row, or someone who is just plain toxic and raging in champ select.

the above is incorrect and should be ignored
