the 2 things to fix ARAM

Irelia Bot··101 votes·3,422 views
  1. all champs are unlocked

  2. If you dodge you will still have the same champ as before you dodged. In other words dodging is pointless to get a better champ. Yes this means dodging when you have udyr means you will still have udyr.

Having all champions unlocked has been brought up before, is still a good suggestion, and makes ARAM live up to its name better. Not much to add here.

However, I can imagine a few ways this way of handling dodging might end up strange or exploited.

1a. What would happen if you and four other people got Aatrox in separate ARAM champ selects during which you all dodged in order to have Aatrox "locked in". Then you all partied together for another ARAM. Would it become All for One All Mid or would you just not be allowed to queue together? 1b. Supposing that it would not become All for One All Mid and that you are allowed to queue together we'll assume that at least one person in your party would get Aatrox and the rest would just get random champions as if they had not dodged. Now, if you weren't the party member who got Aatrox and you were to dodge again would you have Aatrox for your next game or the champion you last dodged with? 2. How would matchmaking handle two random people who happened to have "locked in" the same champion? Would they not be allowed to be matched with each other? 3. People would probably end up adapting to this by dodging if they disliked their team composition but liked the champion they got. 4. As unlikely as it sounds you could assemble any team composition you wanted by dodging then holding onto your "locked in" champion til you can queue up with people who had also dodged in order to "lock in" particular champions.

But, if you can iron out the situations listed above I could see this lowering the frequency of dodging.

1st one seems meh, 2nd one I agree. Got Ezreal that I wanted to play after so long... But someone dodged so my next game was a lost game as Braum...

When they get a bad champ, instant dodge, but when I get a boring champion, nobody dodges...

The struggles...

The first one is to counteract all of the aram only accounts.

Aram accounts: Blitzcrank Caitlyn Ezreal Fiddlesticks Heimerdinger Janna Jhin Katarina Lux Morgana Nidalee Sona Soraka Teemo Xerath Ziggs

Those are the best Aram champs (besides personal pref) due to long range, hard engage, or hard control. Or Katarina. Yi is no longer in usual accounts I've noticed...

Edit: Also losing my peeps so often is why I do odd things. I will rarely build somehow how they are meant to be built. Just won a crit blitz stomp (lost our structures do to double dc on ali/luu) and landed a 900 damage crit punch on syndra at one point. :)

Mandaari17 votes

Blitzcrank Less than 52% win rate. Most people would call a win rate slightly over 50% perfectly balanced.

Caitlyn Same as Blitz. Hovers around 52%.

Ezreal 50%.

Katarina 49%.

Morgana 53%. A little bit high, but not awful.

Nidalee People seriously still think Nidalee is still a god in ARAM? She's at 41%, lower than Udyr, Tryndamere, and Aatrox. Her spears are the thinnest skillshot in the game and her heal does very little healing until she has a lot of AP.

Soraka 47%. Something about a 50% healing reduction and Mortal Reminder.

Xerath Wavers pretty heavily between 48% and 54%.

Let's also not forget that 7 of the top 15 win rate champions on HA are tanks. Galio Sion Taric Maokai Rammus Nautilus Illaoi

Do. Your. Research.

bill842 votes

Galio and illaoi are up there because they have poke, sustain, and a massive aoe ult.

hhaavviikk3 votes

win rate is irrelevant it's all about how frustrating and annoying it is to face them in ARAM

Mandaari4 votes

You want to talk about frustrating? How about being rendered nearly useless because a tank with snowball can ruin your day for just standing within a screen's width of them? How about dying to a Nautilus or Galio who is nigh unkillable when you're stuck with a Diana. You have to stop complaining about Nid spears at some point. They really can't be made much thinner.

Hell, most of those problems were introduced by snowball. People are so frustrated with the memory of healers and poke and so easily pacified by "Look ma, I'm Lee Sin" in spell form. They conveniently ignore that snowball is way more frustrating than any poke or heal comp ever was.

Maximum Morde4 votes

Snowball is the best thing to ever happen to ARAM.

Mandaari2 votes

Snowball is like Lee Sin or Zed on SR. It's amusing to watch and can allow for flashy stuff, but it's frustrating to play against and they don't actually make the game health any better.

Snowball is the LC$ Big Plays of ARAM.

Maximum Morde3 votes

I just personally find snowball preferable to the absolute Aram smurf dominance with pure long range poke/kite/disengage. Do I think it's perfect? No. But until they gut Aram accounts by putting all champs unlocked for Aram mode, it's the best thing we've gotten added to date.

Mandaari1 votes

And what about ARAM smurf dominance of accounts full of those tanks? They're brokenly OP because of snowball. Galio was strong before snowball was added, but now he's virtually unstoppable. Why don't you complain about those kinds of champions?

Ask yourself, is it the smurfing you hate or is it the specific champions that they're smurfing with?

You already have a ton of answers to AP mages, especially after season 6 dumped a bunch of strong anti-burst items into the game. You have Talisman and Righteous Glory to engage with. You have Banner to push with. You have Locket to teamfight with. You have way better regen and health options to sustain with. Poke comps are hard to deal with in the early game and that's about it. If you survive that, which isn't that hard (maybe frustrating, but not hard), then you pretty much have the game gifted to you on a silver platter.

Now look at all the bullshit that snowball adds. Immobile ADCs and mid/short-range mages are utterly fucked. Stealth champions have yet another means of being seen. Tanks can be utterly brain dead and still engage with ease. God forbid you're playing against Annie because she's pretty guaranteed to hit your back line with a full Tibbers combo every time.

You know what champions Snowball was supposed to help? All the assassins and melee ADCs that haven't budged from their 40% win rates since the spell was added. Akali was never weak to poke comps from lack of mobility. She was weak because, among a lot of other things, she gets dumpstered by all the stealth reveals (which now includes snowball). Snowball didn't do a damn thing to help any of them. I don't know how you can claim it's the best thing ARAM has gotten to date when all it did was make strong champions stronger.

Maximum Morde1 votes

I find the balance better this way if only because you can still beat tanks early with an all squishy team by objective rush. They still have to get items to allow them to live longer than 2 seconds. When it was the other way around, it was irrelevant. The all poke team won 9/10 times regardless of match duration. Like I said, it isn't good balance right now either, but its still better than the other way around. I'd like to see them unlock all champs, then we can remove the snowball and see if it works well balancewise.

Mandaari1 votes

I don't mean this offensively, but what you're saying is mostly only the case in lower MMR matches. Anecdote time:

A little bit before snowball was added I was leveling a smurf by playing some ARAMs (was not an ARAM smurf). I had a pretty melee heavy team comp (GP, Khazix, J4 I think). We were against a pretty typical poke comp. What did my team do? They started straight damage items and didn't fight. They didn't clear the waves. Hell, they didn't even always stand in experience range. So what happens? The other team pokes my defense-item-less team and gets the tower really early. If my team had built regen/health/MR they could have taken more of the poke. They would have fed fewer kills and been down less gold. If they had wavecleared they wouldn't have lost tower so early, which lost them more gold and control of the health relics.

That sounds like an extreme, and it is a little, but the same kind of thing happens all the time when I watch low MMR ARAMs. They are perfectly winnable games, even in the non-poke team's favor a lot of times, but people have this mentality that ARAMs are about constant fights when they're not.

Maximum Morde1 votes

One half of a tank item doesn't cut it against even 0 damage items this season. I agree that the feeding scenario is mostly a low mmr thing, but the all squishy ranged team winning early by objective rush can take place at all mmrs depending on which tanks and which squishies. It's all in the cards.

Nephilimicon5 votes

I try to tell them all, Tank ALWAYS wins ARAM

Maximum Morde4 votes

Tanks don't always win. Plenty of champs can shred them and soak their damage just fine. You mean tank team vs squishy team. Balanced team beats them both.

PastorWolf1 votes

Your forgot a few aram money makers 1. Veigar. His stun is super op. 2. Cassiopia= everywhere poison. 3. Singed= that stanky gas and Flip into fights. 4. Sion=immortality, even after death. 5. Karthas=that ult can ace a close team fight. 6. GAREN= HE is immortal with health that heals like Baron

EvilRabbitt2 votes

I only listed the ones I hear the most complaints for. I always hear whining when any of the listed are in a game. Not like "oh we lost" but "omg so broken holy balls I quit". :) People misunderstood again, I need to be more clear.

My personal problem champion that makes me cry is Blitzcrank. You either get a grabber and win or a misser and lose. No in between.

Yes, those famous ARAM only accounts that are numerous enough to warrant punishing EVERYONE by making them play champions they don't know/heavily dislike playing.

I think a way to fix ARAM is to have one of each role, some games the other team has 5 adc and we have all melee champions, we couldn't even touch them

that would not be all random.

The lack of a meta because of not being able to set any kind of roles in aram is one of the things that makes people like it.

3) REMOVE THE TRADE OPTION.

Slammergizer1 votes

Why? Trade is good thing. For example, if someone gets a champ they don't like/and or suck at and someone else loves that champ/mains them, you can just trade it to them, and not be stuck playing someone you won't have fun with.

This. Same team comp as before, so the experience for the other team's pretty much the same, but the first team has more fun.

Why do you not agree with it? This is not suppose to be hardcore mode but since people dodge when they get camp that is not good it is partly killing the game mode.

Princess Emma2 votes

There are champs people REALLY want to play There are champs people want to play There are champs people don't mind playing There are champs people don't want to play, but they will suck it up and go through with it.

Then there are champs people REALLY don't want to play.

People dodging because they didn't get a strong contender, their main, or just got some average champion are petty.

Dodging because you keep getting champions you don't want to play consecutively is alright or if you don't mind playing a certain champ, but not in the mood for them at that moment of time is alright.

It is not a hardcore mode, but you still want to be motivated and have fun while you do it.

I personally go through with a champion if I get them, and I accept people's trades no matter what, but if somebody doesn't want to suffer because they get a champion they really don't want to play at that moment of time, let them dodge.

Players being forced to utilize that champion regardless if they dodge will deter people from Aram, and I can imagine people holding off from playing it for days purely because of that, depending on how stubborn they are.

Saianna10 votes

Imo there are things that should be taboo by default. Dodging used to be one of them. For some reason someone came up with idea that dodging is totally fine as long as you wouldn't have fun with the champion you get. That logic requires some heavy brain damage to work. Each game has 10 players and just by that number there is always someone outside his comfort zone with champion he eitehr dislikes or doesn't know at all. So should every player dodge whenever he won't roll something he likes? If yes, then why play ARAM in the first place? What about other 9 players who received picks they like? Wanna play something you like? Go play Normals, Ranked, TT, Murderers Bridge in customs, Mario, or just outside with other kids. Don't try to cheat this failure of a "random" that happens to be monetized version of ARAM.

Princess Emma2 votes

That's why I rather people not do it all together, and to only dodge if it is crucial and seriously bothering you that damn much.

Not simply dodging because a champion being a bad pick or you not wanting to play them, but leaning more on dodging if you get the same champion multiple times in a row.

I do not think it is all too wrong for someone to dodge if they get Annie 4 times out of 5 matches. It doesn't feel random. Someone may not mind playing a champion the first few times, but for the same champion to constantly occur would be upsetting for plenty of people I'd imagine.

  1. Everyone has at least 1 reroll every game.

  2. Remove snowball

ARAM saved!

Slammergizer4 votes

I don't agree with rerolls each game, I like that you have to earn them, but that may just be me.

Scramrail1 votes

I think it would add a lot more enjoyment to the mode honestly. It would definitely help in those situations where your team comp is utter trash and there is literally no chance of pulling off a win save for an enemy afking or something. Not to mention it would be so beneficial in those instances when you get the same sub-par champion two games in a row.

Im not saying they should get rid of the earning rerolls aspect of the mode, I just think it would be better to have at least one available for people every time, ESPECIALLY if they do end up unlocking all champs for the mode. They could even increase how much it takes to earn another reroll if they gave us a free one every game.

LordForrest1 votes

Eh, it doesn't take that long to earn rerolls, but then again i own all the champions so i don't know how long it takes for people with less, but still can't take more then 4 games, right? (i.e. usually only takes me 2 to 3 games when i blow both.)

Scramrail1 votes

I honestly don't actually know how long it takes me to earn a reroll, but I know the games in which I don't have one and I end up with a champion I hate playing/doesn't work with the team comp/is just plain bad in ARAM are not enjoyable to me at all. The point of ARAM is suppose to be closer to the fun side of things while normal and ranked games are closer to the serious side, and while I fully expect that I wont always have a champion ill enjoy playing I would still prefer to at least have the chance every game to get someone I would enjoy playing.

I know full well there is a chance I could wind up with someone worse when I reroll(I once rerolled Warwick and got MasterYi, decided to reroll again and got Warwick again), but id like at least a chance at getting someone better.

I really don't see why its something that is so crazy of a suggestion either. It legitimately boggles my mind that people would be opposed to the idea.

LordForrest1 votes

Well, i would say its more about the pure idea of ARAM, you literal are given a champ randomly and have to play it. I actually don't even remember if you could swap with others before they added it as a separate mode.

I rarely reroll, and that is only my preference, because i like the random aspect and trying to make it work. When i do, its usually because we literally have no chance with the team we have or my friend is out of rerolls and no one wants the champ he has. Though i will reroll if i get Leblanc or Evelynn if no one wants them. Thats because i can't play Leblanc and i don't really like Evelynn especially in ARAM. Hell, i played Tank Shaco once and we won, it was glorious.

Scramrail1 votes

If there were no rerolls in the game already, I could understand the mentality that giving everyone just one per game would ruin the "spirit" of the mode. However that is not the case, and people have access to rerolls once they earn them and can bank up to two at a time, so with that in mind the "spirit" of the game mode is already "tainted", or whatever you would call it.

I enjoy the mode for a great many reason, such as playing non-traditional builds like AP Nasus, I would just prefer to always have at least one reroll incase ive been champion trolled multiple times/games in a row.

Implementing it, ESPECIALLY if they unlocked all champs as well, would detract nothing from the mode while improving the experience considerable.

LordForrest1 votes

Eh, it doesn't bother me that much, i was just trying to bring a reason why others would be against it. And yes, i guess you could say its already "tainted", but you still got to earn that right.

And honestly having all champs unlocked for use in ARAM, would be nothing but a good thing.

Elewd1 votes

snowball is the only reason champs like udyr taric garen can even work in aram, otherwise getting them you might as well afk because you aint gonna do anything.

Scramrail1 votes

Incorrect on so many levels. I cant help but think there are champions that are worse off in aram that you could have used as examples considering Udyr and Garen have gapclose built in to their kits and Taric has a ranged stun to help him (which doesn't really matter anyways since he's designed as a peel oriented tank not an engage tank).

Even if what you said about those three was true enough to make the addition of snowball necessary for them, the fact that it makes so many others ridiculously OP in that mode should be reason enough to remove it.

Elewd1 votes

Before snowball if you got udyr garen mordekaiser skarner, you basically just went afk or dodged, it was impossible to play them back then. nowadays swiftness boots and getting super tanky helps a lot but back then they were just dodge because you wont be playing the game. Also gapclose implies blinks/dashes, they just run fast, into the enemyteam, that will most likely have some form of cc if they have a brain to stop you. and early in the matches, thanks for giving them first blood udyr.

Scramrail1 votes

Im sorry but that's just not the experience I had pre-snowball at all. It was indeed a far less enjoyable experience playing as those champions (which would tie in with my desire to give everyone 1 reroll every game) but I would rather go back to having a small handful of "garbage-tier" champions in the mode than have snowball, which makes a great many champions ridiculously overbearing if not overpowered.

I consider gapclose to be any ability that helps a champion get in range of their target via movement, this includes Garens Q and Udyrs passive. So on top of these champions having abilities that help them get in range of their target, they also traditionally build at the very least bruiser if not full tank, AND the average movespeed on champions (some classes more than others) is on average higher than it was pre-mark.

All in all, mark really isn't that necessary and takes a lot away from the mode in my opinion.

Elewd1 votes

from my experience of playing aram before it was even a matchmade mode and you did it in customs, if you got a melee without a gapclosing ability that coudl ignore the 5 abilities being launched at you to cc you, you were useless, you just sat back and waited to die. During that time if you wern't ranged you were useless and you were better off dodging, it wasn't fun getting udyr before mark/dash, it wasn't fun getting Mordekaiser, it wasn't fun getting those champs. they added mark/dash to alleviate the "got a melee better dodge" stigma that was going around for a LONG while, before mark/dash more than half of the aram lobbies were getting dodged because someone got a melee, now its just people not liking the champ they got.
