Which is better?
IE into shiv is the go to build path for marksman at 6300 gold. What I don't get is why this build path is rushed vs BT into PD at the same cost plus sustain.

There are pros and cons to both. It also depends on the champion played and the champs matched up against. Some champs do better with earlier crit (IE) and some do better with sustain. For example, I've been getting into Quinn lately, and IE > Shiv has been doing well for me, whereas I don't think I'd enjoy the BT > PD as much.
There are other tools to keep you alive and ie puts out more damage than bt. You can go bt first in some situations though such as if your team has an excess amount of damage vs the other teams lack of tankyness. Such as vs 3 assassins a adc and supp you may not need the damage of ie but will be better off with the shield and sustain of a double life steal build ,bt and botrk, instead of a crit build.
