Galio's changes aren't meant to be a "buff" but rather a shift in playstyle

Malicious Metal··85 votes·5,036 views

I see people already up in arms about Galio being "overbuffed" and people calling out Riot for seemingly just wanting to watch the Game burn with these "OP" changes.

Yet a lot of them seem to have missed the Memo.

Galio is just TOO GOOD in competitive played as a PURE TANK. He literally just builds 6 Tank items and brings too much to the table with extreme reliability with all his CC and Wave clear.

This recent set of changes aims to fix this by making Galio build more AP and become less of a monster in Pro play but still be a good pick in SoloQ. By effectively giving him back what used to make him "Galio"; A Mage with tank like qualities that builds quite a few AP items.

So people, calm your bloody mammary glands, as an AP Galio player myself I welcome this change, though I count on Riot reducing his Q Max hp damage as it's a bit too strong.

But seriously, it's soon going to be Preseason, let Riot be crazy, release this with strong numbers and see them balancing in the course of Preseason. Just calm the fuck down.

Edit; Jesus fucking christ people can't read so I'll have to spell it out, huh? #Galio IS supposed to build AP and be a damage threat! He's a battlemage/Warden hybrid and Riot is trying to shift him towards this intended niche, he's just too good as a full tank in pro play and by hurting his pure tank build and make him actually have to invest into damage Riot can balance him for us SoloQ plebs and not have to keep him on a 45% win rate for regular play. #That being said, the numbers are DEFINITELY too high but you guys already being at Riot's throat, demanding the balance team to be fired and raging like good ol' Gameplay is known for you're not helping. At all.

Jesus, Metal, new numbers on Galio are crazy no matter how you look at it. If he squeezes in 2 passive procs into combo, he gained well more than 100% AP scaling in a single patch.

Players have all the right to e concerned seeing change like that, no matter what it is 'intended' to be. It's not preseason yet.

Goodnight Nunu8 votes

I think that's kind of the goal here, no? For him to actually have a reason to build AP to make us of increased ratios.

There's a point where you can't just nerf Galio more and more until he's so bad he has to go AP. Riot's direction seems solid as Ap galio is more interactive too, especially with the cdr component of his passive.

Zero Skill Tank11 votes

There is difference between increasing ratios to support AP builds, and granting a champion well above 100% AP ratio all at once.

im plat a ton of ap galio and i can guarentee you those numbers will get hotfixed. the scaling max health on q is the thing they need to look at otherwise he should be fine tbh

As I already mentioned myself. It's by far the highest % max hp scaling damage ability there is.

For reference, Morde gains 4% max hp per 100 ap...over TEN seconds.

Galio gets 9% over 1.5.

On a basic ability.

TahmKench ?

Malicious Metal17 votes

It's only 2% per 100 AP.

Azadethe2 votes

it's 2% PER .5 second. In other words, 4% per second of the duration, per 100 AP. At 20 minutes it does around 500 + 30% HP.

LordGeovanni6 votes

You cant mean tahm whos W is one solid damage number no matter how long you are sitting in his belly for.

Yma S4 votes

if you stand in the ENTIRE Q duration

Malicious Metal4 votes

To be fair, with how much CC galio has it's hard to avoid most of it.

Ralanr1 votes

9% in total 1.5 seconds or 9% for each .5?

Cause Sion’s shield does 14%.

Malicious Metal3 votes

I'm talking about scaling.

It doesn't have a base damage at all.

But it's 3% per 100 Ap ever 0.5 seconds.

Malicious Metal7 votes

The season ends in about 2 weeks, that's nothing. Season 7 is over. Heck, they buffed GP in the same patch too.

Also, I'm certain Galio's numbers will get nerfed but people being out for Riot's blood already is just sickening. They got a good direction for Galio, number tweaking will ensue no matter what.

Zero Skill Tank10 votes

Exactly - 2 weeks is nothing. There is no reason to introduce like 1000 pre-mittigation damage to a champions lategame combo NOW - chances are, AP Galio would become a thing anyway with new keystones, and if not, those two weeks will give Riot no meaningful data. Instead, they can ruin some ranked games for players that still do them.

There is potential cost, but no potential gain. Those changes should ship in preseason patch. The fact they didn't is a great oversight of live balance team.

LadyRenly14 votes

why couldn't they give eve, an assassin this much damage?

Nyarlathοtep4 votes

THIS, or every other mage. He has more ap scalings than dedicated mages. This is just sad. Even veig, the proclaimed most hard scaling mage in the game has one 100% his w, his q has 60% and even his ulti which is known for the "oneshots" has only 75%. This is just sad. Why someone like him has so strong scalings while mages that most of the times are squishy have nothing?

DuskDaUmbreon8 votes

Veigar's ultimate has a beyond 100% AP scaling at its max damage threshold. 120%, I believe.

Xonra3 votes

Why is Veigar the only champion anyone can ever bring up when talking about AP scaling? I've seen veigar said by every damned person trying to make this argument and literally no one else.

My Waifu Vanilla5 votes

Except Veigar will ALWAYS have WAY more AP than any other champion in the game. 100% AP on Veigar could be upwards of 250+ more damage compared to someone else with a similar ratio.

TwitchInMyPants13 votes

Pre-rework Galio was basically an anti-mage that needed to build AP to have relevant damage and then transitioned into building tank

New Galio so far has been an anti-mage tank that gets to have mage level damage by building 0 AP and stacking tank items

I thought it was obvious why they're taking him in this direction where he either builds AP for better damage but is squishier or he builds tank and just has shittier damage, it actually puts some risk in his kit

Warlord Dienekes2 votes

That would make sense, if it wasn't for the AP ratio on his W. As of now he can build AP for damage, which makes him a better tank.

Yma S9 votes

these boards are dogshit bronze players who claim his Q can oneshot people

yea if he builds damage items - which sacrifices his durability

and if you get hit by his Q and then proceed to stand in it for ENTIRE duration which happens because YOU are awful

PokladnicaZla5 votes

He has a knock and a taunt to make you stand in it. Have you seen the PBE video? A guys builds him full AP and destroys other players.

He's bound to be the next champ to be cried about on the forums. Which wont be just simple QQ,but a serious gamehealth issue.

Yma S9 votes

oh ok

and Fiddlesticks has all the CC to make you stand in his full lifedrain

PokladnicaZla6 votes

Umm, Flee makes you run in the opposite direction, while Silence doesn't effect movement at all.How is that comparable ?

Durzaka3 votes

uh, Fiddle has the tools to make you stand in at most half of his lifedrain.

And also, 5 seconds is a lot longer time to react to taking damage than 1.5 seconds.

Terchio8 votes

He lost 30 base damage on one ability, and probably got it all back at level 3 with his AP scaling. It's nice that his tank form is noted as a problem, but why is so little done about the control the guy has? He has too much of it, which is why his AP form has become overshadowed in the first place.

He needs a direction picked for him. Either his control needs clipped so that his lategame effectiveness is based on his AP scaling, or his whole damage scale needs clipped so that laning against him is not overbearing, but he still gets heavy utility for lategame. Galio is not alone in this, either, but considering he has %HP shred along with allied %damage negation in his kit, there's little this guy can't do already, barring any actual CC.

On another note, why are Wardens becoming tank shredders? It's wrecking the whole laning phase for opponents, despite Wardens being above average CC, and their carries already become semi-invulnerable lategame regardless. I can understand it on a single-target one like Poppy, but Galio???

Worst case scenario, and I mean super worst, put the shred on his dash so that he actually has to be in danger when he uses it, or he whiffs it. The dude needs to be less safe early game for his effectiveness late.

Yordle Xayah7 votes

"We don't know how to make it work so JUST GIVE IT DAMAGE"

Classic Riot

Malicious Metal3 votes

Well, to be fair, that's what you need to do if you want him to actually build AP.

Give him scalings that warrant AP heavy builds and not just piggybacking off Abyssal mask and high bases.

cocacolalips6 votes

Doesn't matter, AP Galio is still gonna be better than 90% of the mages in the game. Why would you play Annie when you can play Galio who has more burst, more range/poke, more CC, more mobility, more utility, more survivability?

Galiö1 votes

Has almost the same CC time wise. Galio slightly more if kid circke ukt into full taunt into e... Just more reliable short duration cc.

Also annie has more burst... just less reliable poke dmg. Her clear kond pf sucks cause she can get bullied.

What a weird comparison.

cocacolalips3 votes

it sounds weird to you because you have no idea what you are talking about, galio has 3 times has much cc, higher ap ratio, higher base stats, higher everything.

Galiö1 votes

Galio has 1.2 seconss cc knock up at most with ult. .5 with e and a second with w. He rounded uo has almost 3 seconds of CC. Almost.

cocacolalips3 votes

I can't believe I have to type this, there are resources such as google that you can use when you are clueless.

W -> 0.5-1.5

E -> 0.75

R -> 0.75-1.25

W E R = 2.0 min - 3.5 max.

Annie stun? 1.25 min - 1.75 max. It's twice as much ffs + look at the size of his R. good luck dodging this + you are ignoring everything else I pointed out. You have 0 reason to play most mages when you can just pick galio. His Q alone scales harder than Annie entire rotation rofl.

Galiö1 votes

Welp the unranked player put me in my place good.

cocacolalips3 votes

that unranked player has a higher mmr than you + all you need is 2 working eyes and a half working brain to put 1+1=2 together, it's not hard, if you are a bit familiar with mages and their stats and the way they play it's instinctive.

stats will speak for themselves anyway, he already gained +5% win rate and his best build are AP heavy with items such as Rabaddon Deathcap, Ludens Echo and Liandrys Torment having ridiculous win rates.

Xonra2 votes
  • Named your account Galio.
  • Have no idea what you are talking about in regards to changes to Galio.
  • Get shown flat out you are wrong.
  • Defaults to insults someone rank (when 99.9% of people don't actually give a shit what their rank is).

You the MVP.

KuroCaliber2 votes

Those max values are different. Annie's go up by lvl, Galio's increase depending on if you hit the center or not. Also, Annie's is point-and-click, while All of Galio's can miss.

Sire Hippington6 votes

well, i played that guy on OBE and legit oneshot squishys with a fully hitting Q. Sorry, but 1.5ap ratio+9%/100ap maxhealth on a ranged aoe that has 6sec base cd is absurd by any means. with 500AP, a single Q is 990+45% maxhealth...

There's no sugercoating it, Riot went apeshit on a failed design to somehow try and make him work in soloQ and balanced in proplay. Gallios kit offers to much in coordinated play to ever have good numbers, and champs rarly work well in soloQ if their numbers are low. They totally went overboard on the compensation buffs for the base damage nerfs that aim at proplay, cause he already performs poorly in soloQ...

ITS TOO STRONG! not ''a bit too strong'' Have you not seen Vandril's AP Galio montage with the Galio on the PBE right now?!

Fucking hell Metal, Not even this should be in preseason, Galio players would never get to play their champion in normal (draft) & ranked, Did you forget how people can abuse sh1t in preseason for MMR increase so your placements become better for you?!

Shadow Hazard4 votes

You realized that it isn't preseason yet, and riot came out with a stupid change like this. So no this is not fine, people have very good reason to be angry.

Xonra4 votes

Yup, still 2 weeks that people are trying to climb for rewards. People don't just go "whelp MM said "only 2 weeks" so fuck it, not playing anymore, give us them stupid changes Riot!"

Yeah....not really how that works.

Titanium703 votes

While you're right - the direction is good.

The numbers are just stupid and should have never hit live as they are. Those numbers would be fine in internal playtesting and maybe PBE.

But just looking at the DMG he can deal with Q alone... I dont know what other they could think other than: "Hey, let's

watch the Game burn"

Bârd3 votes

They're good in concept, but the numbers are just absurd.

Lets look at one combo from a full build Galio.

item 3152 item 3151 item 3020 item 3100 item 3135 item 3089

567 AP

E>auto>Q>W>auto>Protobelt

(730 damage) > (769 damage) > (1090 damage + 51.03% max health) > (no damage, but resets passive) > (769 damage) > (467 damage)

3825 magic damage plus 51.03% max hp.

Not many champions can survive that, and the full combo is all but guaranteed to land if Galio lands the initial E.

Titanium702 votes

Refering to the Edit:

Malicious PLS! Noone complains about a shift in power on aynthing. That is Riot decision and it's totally fine - although not really fitting when looking at the whole Kit but that's another story.

The point is - this numbers as they are should have never ever hit Live! And who ever thought it would be fine to throw them ( as they are) into a compeditive enviroment screwed up BIG.

It's not like they dont have 2 Steps of testing before an updated is made. (PBE and their internal testing.) And it's really not so hard to tell those numbers are busted - first time reading I had a bad feeling - after calculating things through noone should ever come to the comclusions that everything's fine!

And it's simply not OK yolo in those changes. And we had a bunch of those decisions so far.

Smitty Manjensen1 votes

It's just plain favoritism, Galio got power "shifted" while Sejuani probably got gutted, why don't they gut that overpowered piece of shit?

Sahn Uzal17 votes

Sejuani has a 55% winrate, Galio has a 46% winrate. And Sej has like 10 times the pickrate on top of that.

But Riot giving Galio power in Solo Queue enviroments is ''Favoritism'', right?

True, I'll admit I didn't take that in consideration. But well by what I saw Galio will soon have a similar win rate to what Sejuani had.

Galio's propably overtuned from what I've seen, nothing a numbers change can't fix though :P

Hell, that was even mentioned in the OP lol
