Why do ADC's need an item that gives them damage reduction?

warpenguin555··7 votes·650 views

Tell me if im wrong, but i though that the ADC was supposed to be the player you had to protect because they had a ton of damage an in most cases no way to protect themselves. I dont think Phantom Dancer is a terrible item design, just it should be more for skirmishers/bruisers, classes who want to be dueling others for solo kills and not for marksmen, who want to stand in the back and dont want it to come to a 1v1.

Because a dead ADC is useless.

Okay? So? If they don't want to die, they should play smarter and not rely on a horribly designed item.

Playing smarter means knowing when to build defensive items.

Astôlfo4 votes

Except they really shouldn't be able to use strong defensive items. The general limit should be things like Maw/Mercurial/QSS/Youmuu's (sort of)/lifesteal, and GA late game. If they don't want to die, they should stick with their team and play behind the tanks or such. Not rely on abusing horribly designed items or items not even meant for them like Sterak's.

mmk. thanks for the incredibly constructive and well thought-out reply.

The team should be protecting said marksmen, and the marksmen shouldn't be doing something stupid like roaming alone.

I hate my ADC4 votes

Well duh. But even with a team protecting him, he still has to get in range to attack people which put him at risk of getting bursted down.

Astôlfo1 votes

Uh yeah except then the team could just CC them.

Astôlfo4 votes

Because PD is an awfully designed item.

{quoted} I dont think Phantom Dancer is a terrible item design,

i do. since the item was reworked to include % damage reduction.

ranged adc are balanced around being squishy and susceptible to getting bursted by mages and assassins or getting caught out by fighters. its their counterweight for their almost comical lategame damage from distance.

and then theyre given a bunch of items that allow them to break their own rules and make them unproportionally resilient to burst or duelling assassins and fighters.

look at the mobility items for bruisers for example. mainly. item 3742

it still follows the same rules of susceptability to kiting, since the movement speed falls off when the wearer is cced. which makes it situationally good on slow champions to roam or to flank.

but it doesnt straight up negate an intended weakness like defensive adc items do.

item 3156 item 3139 item 3072 item 3046

its even worse, that these powerful defensive mchanisms are tacked on to extremely strong offensive items and dont cut into the carries damage potential.

the whole reason marksmen buy it is when the enemy team has a diver sitting on them and they want some damage reduction which gives them atkspd+crit at the same time. if you're not being focused you just go any of the other zeal items.

ADCs given tools to deal with other classes without sacrificing anything, meanwhile other classes aren't given tools to deal with ADCs, and if they are, there are SERIOUS drawbacks for it. #balance

exactly on point.

in the past, if a carry needed extra safety, he had to build items like item 3026 item 3102 which cut into his damage potential for the extra safety.

but now they just can go for a 6 item offensive build with a ridiculous amount of defensive mechanisms just tacked onto these items.

WoonStruck3 votes

6 item offensive build, better items, Fervor, more % multipliers from masteries.

Riot: "ADC rework was a TOTAL success guys." :^)

I'd say they do more damage this season than seasons 1 and 2 (when their late game was considered broken, but they paid for it with absurdly weak early games), meanwhile tank items are about half as powerful as far as efficiency/power than they were back then AND there are more ways to mitigate their effects.

But people complain that tanks are broken because they refuse to build item 3135 or item 3035 before 5th/6th item and don't have a single defensive item...and don't think their team needs to peel for them. lol

Are you joking? Sacrificing things like additional crit or magic damage, lifesteal, and useful actives to keep them alive in exchange for damage is HUGE. A Jinx with IE runans and bloodthirster will be doing a lot more dmg than IE, PD, Mercurial but makes it super easy for a cc tank or assassin to flank the team and lock down the carry for a free kill. At least bruisers/tanks can do their jobs no matter what health items they build. Need MR? Here's a boat ton of health, magic resist, cooldown, and a glorious healing passive: item 3065 Armor? Hey hey, why not a fat health and armor item with a crippling slow active: item 3143 or, if you need the movement speed of Ghost, here's item 3742 . All you have to do is walk in with your 3000 hp, resistances and movement speed to lock down the carry for 2 seconds to win most of your fights.

WoonStruck2 votes

item 3072 75 AD

item 3139 65 AD

Wow, that Jinx is really killing her damage output there...

And Bloodthirster is another defensive item...it grants effectively 350 HP at level 18, and holds 20% lifesteal...which is a defensive stat.

Seriously, are you stupid? ADC defensive items are so over-tuned that you honestly think one of their defensive items is an offensive item...lol

_ Edit: Didn't include PD/Runaan's because all Runaan's offers, DPS-wise, is 15 on-hit damage, which is often going to be less than 5% of her damage; less than 1% if she crits. The 5% AS on PD effectively nullifies that. _

What ADCs give up for defenses is effectively nothing. Its so insignificant compared to their increased survivability that its honestly laughable how big of a damage difference you're trying to make it out to be.

Lock On2 votes

You're calling me stupid when you don't realize how much of a difference a carry with an extra 10 AD and crit makes in damage output during a teamfight. Hilarious. You must also believe the random AD buff on Essence Reaver and other items was just for funsies by Riot's balancing team.

WoonStruck1 votes

What crit would Jinx be missing out on?

Defensively, she still had IE and PD...which is the same as IE+Runaan's.

Considering Fervor and other AD she already had...that 10 AD is less than a 1% damage increase. Do math. You. Are. Wrong.

Also, you still haven't address that Bloodthister is a DEFENSIVE ITEM, so that 10 AD doesn't matter because its still on a DEFENSIVE ITEM.

Lifesteal is a defensive stat for ADCs. Much less so for other classes.

Lock On1 votes

Between PD Runans, same crit, huge difference in damage (2 extra auto attacks that can crit) Some carries go for a 50% crit build, others do 70%, depending on whether they're grabbing another zeal item or built ER.

Using percentages skews the argument in your favor and blinds you from seeing the real difference that 1% increase makes. I'd encourage you to hop onto a custom with a typical lvl 8 adc build against another with different offensive/defensive itemization. Otherwise, you shouldn't comment on things you don't understand, like the role, or the itemization, or dps.

Watch this, Phylol gives a great overview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUNchrSm_3o

Essentially, it's glass-cannon autistic dmg build to chunk the fat tank ekko and j4 while they murder your team, or a defensive build so you can survive the Zed or Yasuo running into you.

I hate my ADC2 votes

What do you think you are doing using common sense in a thread meant to QQ about ADCs being OP. Showing people that other roles also have broken ass items that does everything for them.

Go away, nobody wants someone being right on these boards.

I feel that PD only shines when 2 AA champs are in a fight, since the winner will be decided by crit chance and dps. An item that lowers damage done by one champ while increasing AS and crit chance is an advantage but feels more niche then the other offensive items with defensive attributes. Anyways I mainly choose it over the other Zeal items purely for the higher AS and chase potential.
