People Who Think Ranks Matters In Terms of Player Skill/Game Knowledge

Shuyin178··20 votes·6,987 views

You're part of the reason this game is so toxic. You think your Gold V rank makes you better than a Bronze V player, or if you're a Challenger player thinking you're better than a Platinum player.

Ranking harassment is one of the biggest problems with this game. Unranked players like myself get treated like Bronze players because we don't want to enter the toxic ranked environment of trolling and AFKs.

My 1st 3 seasons of the game I played placement matches to see where I would end up. Silver V in Season 3 (1st year playing the game), I knew I wasn't good enough to play ranked at the time and didn't have a proper role or champion pool yet so I didn't focus on it until I improved at the game. Seasons 4 and 5 I played my placement matches to see where I would end up, but never dedicated to ranked for personal life reasons that were going on at the time, granted I still didn't feel I could handle ranked play yet so I wouldn't have done it anyways. I didn't know at the time that you're always placed lower each pre-season when you finish placements, so now whenever someone talks about my rank I'm always being treated as a Bronze player due to my season 5 rank of Bronze 3 just because I didn't do anything past placements so my rank never went up. I didn't do any ranked in Season 6 and honestly don't know if I will do it this season even though I know I'm good enough at the game now to play it and climb.

For anyone wondering what my elo range is now in terms of ranked tags, I consistently get placed against platinum players in Normals (and can win against them most of the time mind you). Do I think I deserve to be Plat? God no, I see myself being somewhere in mid Gold more than likely (even though there is a chance I could be higher). Even if I did reach mid Gold I'd still get harassed as a Gold level player by the Plat+ player base just the same as I get treated as a Bronze player now.

It's dumb and annoying that players that just want to enjoy the game get treated like trash just because they don't have a high standing in Ranked play.

End of rant, hope you all have a Merry Christmas or a Happy Hanukkah, whichever you're about if either.

Well, I both agree and don't agree.

A gold player is technically a better player than a bronze player, and a diamond is technically better than both the gold and bronze player. That said there are different types of skill, and account rank does not necessarily match player rank (boosted animals and the like). A bronze player could have as much game knowledge as a diamond, or have the mechanical skill of a gold player, but be missing the other component in a way that makes them play pretty poorly.

Personally reaching a higher rank does mean you are a better player than those who have a lower one, technically, but it will never mean you are simply better than they are. Some people want to feel superior to others, and so they try and play the part. Funny thing is most of them will never realize how horribly they fail at acting superior. As Game of Thrones put it "any man who must say 'I am the king' is no true king".

Just ignore this type of person. Hopefully they grow out of it and don't regret their behavior too much when they get older.

so if i like the competitive side of this game im a jackass?

if ur bronze and im diamnd and ur telling me ur evenly skilled and i call u a moron, thats not rank harassment.

obviously calling unranked players trash is rude.

thats known.

this post was just for upvotes.

Shuyin1786 votes

I didn't say if you're a Ranked player you're a jackass at any point. I'm talking about the players that think and act like they're better than everyone else below them just because they are a higher tier in ranked.

SchmidttyGames4 votes

People don't just "end up" in Diamond or Challenger. They earned it and they maintain it. Maybe you should listen to their advice when offered.

If they're just being a douche, that's different, and punishable under certain circumstances depending on what they are saying. But I haven't met very many Diamond/Challenger level players that are really that asinine. Most simply offer you advice on how to not get scrubbed. If that offends you, maybe you should play a game more your speed.

redniwediS2 votes

It's usually the high plat/diamond 5 players who act like this. High diamond and challenger are normally fine.

Leetri2 votes

OP isn't talking about higher ranked players offering advice, they're talking about when people say "well ur bronze so ur opinion doesnt matter" even though said Bronze player could have extremely well thought out thoughts on the subject at hand. That Bronze player could know perfectly well how to counter X champion but people discredit them just because they're Bronze. Then an LCS pro tells the exact same thing the Bronze player did, but this time they all agree because a Challenger player said it.

SchmidttyGames1 votes

Like I said, being a douchebag is a different story.

However, knowing how to accomplishing something and actually being able to are different things entirely. That is, most likely, the literal difference between a Challenger and a Platinum.

KaRniVooL131 votes

no your arent a jackass for liking rank and want to be as good as you can be... your a jackass when you try to throw around your rank and elo like it matters to any one but you... just cuz some one choose not to play rank dont mean they are any less knowledgeable about the game . and you dont need to go around acting like it some pissing contest trying to prove who has the biggest _______ ( mmr /elo ) or put people down or discredit others for their opinions or thoughts.

just remember the actual point of the game is to have fun and enjoy it.

here is a though about rank...

rank isnt something to be ashamed of. i feel rank is just a way for riot to put players of similar skill levels vs each other so they can have fair games and enjoy and have fun playing the game... hear me out...

you are bronze.. what if every game you matched vs plats and diamonds? and you get stomped up and down the map and the game is no fun to you.. are you likely to keep playing if that is what happens every time?

on the other hand if your plat/diamond whatever "high" elo if you playing vs people lower skill level then you is that fun not every being challenged? it would be like if you were to go play a game co op vs bots or a custom game vs bots and the difficult is set on easy?

how fun is that?

so in theory rank is there to put us vs people we have a chance to win against while being challenged so the game is fun and rewarding at the same time and keeps you playing..

SchmidttyGames9 votes

This makes about as much sense as a booty hole flavored blunt wrap.

Of course a Challenger level player is better than a Platinum player. If they weren't, they wouldn't be Challenger. There may not be a great deal of difference between Bronze-Silver-Gold-Platinum on each individual tier, but there is a huge difference between a Platinum and a Bronze.

Shuyin1783 votes

Here's the thing, most of Challenger/Master rank players are there because they've played ranked longer giving them more time to climb.

There are people who are newer than those players that are in Platinum and stuff that have Challenger level potential, but just haven't played ranked long enough yet to reach that tier.

That's the thing the people I ranted about don't understand, there are players below them at the current point in time that have the potential to be higher/just as good as them. The only differences are time spent playing ranked and competitive mind set.

Like I said in the rant, if I played Ranked I feel I'd probably be somewhere in mid Gold. If I reached that point I wouldn't bash Bronze players because I would have to climb from the bottom of Bronze to reach Gold. There are players like myself that don't dedicate time to ranked so if I bashed Bronze players as a Gold player then I'd be bashing the players with the same or higher level gameplay potential as myself the same way I get bashed now.

SchmidttyGames2 votes

I wouldn't bash anyone. But that's just me. However, I have personally been verbally assaulted for trying to offer legitimately friendly advice to someone I saw making the same repeated mistakes. I'm by no means a beast myself. Hell I'm only Silver 4 right now. But it goes both ways on this one. Context becomes really important because of that.

I actually want Higher Elo players to help me in this manner, but I'm stuck in Silver. xD

Barrosy1 votes

To be honest, you can't be stuck if you keep focusing on the mistakes you make. The only thing YOU can change are your OWN mistakes. I am currently in silver aswell, almost second time in my promos for Silver 3 this season and I came all the way from Bronze 5 from one or two seasons ago. Am still trying to get that golden border but all it takes is practice (from what I read and also am experiencing this myself aswell, else I wouldn't be typing this).

Although I have to admit there are plenty of trolls that can make your life much harder as a ranker in LoL, but never give up.

SchmidttyGames1 votes

I haven't played a game of ranked in months. To be fair, I am certainly much better now in the Bottom/Support roles than I was when I posted this, but my rank is unchanged. I can CS way, way better (like 4.5 per minute better) and in Support I can actually read the map now thanks to simple experience.

I think a lot of people walk into this game expecting a level of success that isn't thesable. They (meaning me, also) do not realize the power of 10+ years of experience in their early games. Running into people that have that experience is still as clear as day to me right now, but the gap between someone like me and someone like that isn't as great today. I know all the champions now. I understand how the game rolls. I realized, with difficulty, that you can win the board without killing your opponent and it is almost always better to worry about the map.

It's harder to get over on me simply because my awareness and understanding have improved. I have higher ELO players to thank for much of this new knowledge. But I still regularly run into players that will bang their heads off of the same wall that won't budge. I'll help them if they let me, but otherwise, I just go about what I'm trying to do. Win or Lose, I'll Learn Something.

I am diamond 2 rank in my main, I was bronze in season 4 when i started. my friends coached me other wise i would be still bronze 5, I made the same mistakes over and over again until then i realized why the heck am i waiting at baron at lvl 15 when everyone is team fighting. I was afraid if i team fight i will die. i hate die dying and reborning, its no fair, but its a game what can u do. so my first step to climb was my started to main jg champ like jax, jax can carrry u to platinum then rengar will make u climb to diamond, but still these days I play shen, he is my main.

Being placed with Plats in Normals doesn't mean shit. If a Challenger never ever plays normals after he reaches level 30, he could be placed against Bronze players for his first few games until the game can get a more accurate MMR for him. And most players don't even take normals seriously at all.

Potential doesn't mean shit if you never achieve it. Nobody cares what your potential achievements are, only your actual achievements. You see yourself as someone who is mid gold? Then maybe try to actually get to mid gold instead of whining about it in the boards.

Knowledge and skill are the main criteria for most everything in life, so of course that translates to League of Legends as well. For instance, if you needed root canal therapy who would you rather have perform it, a dental hygenist? A first year med student? A general dentist (DDS)? Or an endodontist. Each one has a different knowledge and skill level, obviously you would take advice from or want the root canal performed by the person that has the most experience and is most specialized/qualified to do so.

In League of Legends, anyone is allowed to have an opinion regarding game balance, but who is more likely to be credible? A Bronze 5 player? A Silver 4 (the average Elo in North America)? A Plat 1? A challenger or pro player? Each one has different experiences but as you climb, they have different amounts of game knowledge, mechanics and skill.. thus the higher the rank and skill, the more credible the person is with regard to their knowledge. That isn't to say that a pro player is ALWAYS right about something, but I'm more inclined to listen to their opinion than I am a Bronze 5 player, sorry... that's life.

redniwediS2 votes

Your league example doesn't quite fit because of how matchmaking works. In an PvE game everyone has to face the same enemies, so it would definitely fit that a veteran of the game knows which things are actually OP, and which require some practice/knowledge/better gear to handle.

League, on the other hand, doesn't work that way. Low ranked players face other low ranked layers, and diamond players face other diamond players (typically). Yi could be god tier in bronze and trash tier in diamond at the same exact time.

It takes some perspective to see both ends of the scale, and if you have that it doesn't really matter which end of the scale you're actually on. All that matters is that you take the time to learn about each level of play before you make your judgement.

TSM Blazing Fist1 votes

I faced Yi in a fking diamond elo, that guy is god player, he was master rank smurfing in diamond elo, still he loss, cuz he got fked in the jg by my friends

Leetri1 votes

Your example doesn't work. 2 players could have the exact same skill and knowledge, imagine they're clones, but one person only has time to play 10 games while the other plays 1000. If both of them had the same amount of time they would end up in around the same rank, but because 1 of them can't play that often they're Silver 3 while the other clone is Plat 4. Again, they have the exact same knowledge and skill but one is ranked a lot higher than the other purely because of time. The person you're pulling rank on could very well have the skill of a Diamond player, but they don't have enough free time to spend on ranking up.

Scary Door1 votes

That's a hypothetical example based on a situation you have manufactured. Sure, there could be two players the exact same skill level but one only did placements and the other played ten times the number of games, but guess what? I'm still going to listen to the person that is higher ranked in your scenario because they have more time invested, which translates to more experience, which translates to more insight.

As I said, you shouldn't discount an opinion simply because it's from a lower ranked player, but I will /generally/ give more weight to the opinion of a higher ranked player.

Someone may not have time to go to college and earn a doctorate, that doesn't AUTOMATICALLY make them smarter, but they are far more likely to be taken seriously than the person that only graduated high school----which is, again, how life works.

Given an equal number of games played rank means skill. But plenty of players display lower rank borders than their actual skill level, because they simply didn't grind out the climb.

Normals are fun.

Funny thing is, people try pulling rank and saying just because a higher rank is getting downvotes and a lower rank is getting upvotes, "its just because all the bronzies are circlejerking eachother for upvotes".

I do agree with the

"any man who must say 'I am the king' is no true king".

That redniwediS had said though.....

Also, if you have to being up rank to try and prove your point, its because you have no actual valid input with 2 exceptions

  1. That ______ elo is like _____

  2. Someone was asking for advice/looking for someone to play with so someone tosses that in to help either get the add, or to help that player feel a little better about trying that advice.... Which still could be wrong.

Those that just say "im plat your bronze so im better than you"..... Refer to the original post here please.

Game knowledge and skill equal your rank. If you're bronze you have bronze game knowledge and skill, because if you had silver game knowledge or skill you'd BE silver. If you cannot accept that, that truly means that you belong in the rank you're in. Because as long as you cannot accept that your rank reflects your over all skill and game knowledge, you'll never be able to see the mistakes you make and improve on them. But instead, you'll always only see your bad teammates who keep you from reaching that elo which you think you deserve. If you're bronze, your opinion is the opinion of someone that tried, but completely failed. If you're unranked, your opinion is the opinion of someone that didn't even try in the first place. Sure, you're probably better than a bronze player. But I don't care about what you probably could achieve. Instead I care about what you actually achieved. I also don't care that you always play versus Plat players or whatever in normals. Most people that play ranked don't try as hard in normals, so you beating plat players is completely irrelevant to me. Before I value your opinion as much as someone that is mid gold, you'll actually have to get to mid gold in the first place.

redniwediS4 votes

It's game knowledge, skill, and time that equal your rank. You're leaving out a very important part of the equation.

Two players can play at the same level, but if one has a ton of time to play and the other barely has enough time to finish his placements you'll notice a very large difference in their ranks.

Myrmiron2 votes

You're correct. But op only spoke about skill and game knowledge so I left time out of the "equation".

Generally speaking a Gold player is a better player than a Bronze player, and a Challenger player is better than a Platinum player. Yes there are exceptions, people who are boosted, people who don't play often, people who had a few bad games in placement. There are exceptions to almost every rule or fact, it doesn't make them any less true.

The reason I think I am better than a Bronze player is because I have climbed out of Bronze every season since I started playing, I don't even get placed in Bronze anymore. I have a smurf that I climbed from Bronze 5 to Silver 3 last season. So I usually can get out of Bronze fairly easily by abusing their lack of game knowledge/mechanical skills.

Also there is no shame in being low elo, it has no impact on your life or who you are as a person. If you are not as good as others, who cares? Why do you care? I want to climb because I think I can climb, if you don't think you can climb then don't play ranked. It is very easy to just ignore and mute anyone who is rank shaming you because it doesn't matter what they say.

BTW your Normal's MMR is different than your Ranked MMR, you will face different ranked people than you would in Ranked. Don't take this the wrong way, but winning doesn't necessarily mean you are better, it is a Normal and most people don't take them as seriously or they are not playing their best (most likely to practice or just blow off steam/get warmed up).

nm10102 votes

It's a pet peeve when people think they can just declare what rank they think they deserve when they just play normals. I played manamune/titanic warwick top in normals, do you really think I do that in ranked?

If you don't bring up that you think you are a mid gold player due to the occasional plat in a normal game when you don't play ranked, I won't bring up the fact that you don't play ranked and well over half your normal games are vs silver or lower and you don't perform the best.

I've been playing this game for six years, Mobas probably for eight, ten years if you count the maps in Warcraft 3.

But I refuse to play ranked matches because I maybe play League once in awhile with friends, which is about once a week, not enough to bother to climb. Honestly, I don't know how anyone can put up with this game for maybe a few hours. I get talked down to because I'm unranked, its annoying, but whatever.

No you'd probably be platinum if you were platinum lol. Ranking harassment happens in ALL ELOS. A challenger player will tell you you're playing like a masters if you're completely monkeying out. Bronze is just the common term since it's literally 70% of players. The reason players let this get to their head and why they post nonsense like this is cause they're new or along the way they stopped playing to improve. What other players think 100% doesn't need to affect how you play. Yes the league community is shit and there will always be arrogant higher elo players that will abuse the science of tilt but don't let that distract you from the fact that in 1998 the Undertaker changed history as he threw down Mankind from a 16 ft steel cage on WWE's hell in a cell
