Sona's a bad support?

Glîtchy··4 votes·1,599 views

I don't know exactly why people think Sona's a sucky support, I do real well with her, I typically get the following score range,

2-5 kills (mostly in team fights)

1-5 deaths

18-25 assists

I seriously don't get where she's bad, is it just because people don't know how she works or something?

The reasons she's bad? I'll list some of them for you:

  • Lowest damage potential of the support class
  • Weakest healing in the entire game
  • Squishiest champ in the game
  • Lowest MS with no real mobility or pre-6 CC
  • Least+weakest CC of all supports
  • Staggered cooldowns/long cooldowns
  • Melee-range kit
  • Weak ultimate
  • Extreme mana-gating
  • Unusable short durations
  • Unreasonable restrictions on her spells' interactions

8th highest damage out of every support doesn't sound like lowest

4th highest healing out of every support doesn't sound like lowest

Anivia

  • Melee-range kit

Which melee champion has an auto range of 850?

  • Weak ultimate

people say Sona is bad because they compare her kit on isolated situations, worse poke overall, worse shield overall, worse heal overall, worse haste overall, worse CC overall, but it's the combined power of these effects on one champion that makes Sona the powerhouse she is, GD will never agree on this though, because they aren't coherent enough to understand holistic design.

Except they're all true though. You can combine the power of any kit of any support and they will always be infinitely better than Sona's. Hell, even bard level 1 is much better than Sona's level 1. Same with Nami. Starting level 3 she's just outclassed by pretty much everyone else. Braum with his Q and shield, Alistar headbutt+pulv combo, leona all in will crush Sona, thresh, blitz, etc.

Sona is reliant on early game bullying in order to take advantage of the mid game but that doesn't matter when ADC bot lane can farm safely while Sona can't exert any kill pressure pre-6 and an enemy alistar is jjust roaming mid for a kill.

Her sustain is also terrible because of how much mana it cost. Relic/targon early game just outclass her heal in lane. a heal that barely shield and heal at the cost of 80 mana. Cast that twice and you're oom so it's better to seldom use it.

Her ultimate is strong but that's the only redeeming part about her kit.

Yes this is exactly what I was talking about haha, she's not good in isolated situations, comparing her poke with bard's for example will certainly put her in a bad spot, comparing her healing with nami's too and her cc with Leona's of course as well, but nor does bard has a haste and a team shield, nor nami has a team shield or poke potential, nor Leona has any healing or haste.

Yes her mana costs are high but this is because her skills are easily spammable and there has to be a valve to its power.

Again, it is the whole package what makes Sona... well... Sona!

Not really, Sona deals more damage in a game on average than Bard.

If she build AP yes. Bard doesn't need to build AP to do damage.

8th place in damage, 4th place in healing, neither of those are even close to "Worst" now who are these stats comparing to? if support that's pretty shitty placement.

8th in damage when she is suppose to do the most damage out of all support given her supposed kit.

4th in heal? How many champ can heal in this game.

Not just AP, but artificial numbers(Echo, Spellblade). Cause fact is her scalings are shit, she literally needs to create NEW damage sources completely independent of her kit to actually do anything.

Also, keep in mind that's 8th WITH building artificial numbers in 90% of her games. Imagine how low it'd be if she weren't leaning on fake numbers as a crutch.

There are 8 healers in the game, 2 of whom aren't traditional supports(Nid, Kayle). So that's "4th" out of 6 champs, she's sitting in the bottom half of the list. Only reason she isn't last place is because the 2 below her never max heal first. Let's also not forget that Bard's healing requires your teammates to understand how his shrines work. He'd actually be 2nd below Soraka if he wasn't being weighed down by the Burden of Knowledge.

Yep, all those artificial damages that Sona deals mean that any kills or assists she's involved in don't actually show up on the k/d/a scoreboard. And even if a "Victory" screen appears in a game where you abuse those imaginary numbers, it's actually a "Defeat" under the covers and your REAL SUPER SECRET TRUE RANK falls while a Riot dev laughs at you for falling for the trap of building items that synergize with a champion's kit.

No? You don't get to be a good healer and the best in damage. She has the best poke because she has reliable harass AND a way to heal and ignore harass. Enemy harass has reduced effectiveness while Sona's harass has very high effectiveness. She has the highest damage of any support that has an ally heal ability and the second highest of any support with an ally heal or ally shield, only Lux has a shield while outdamaging Sona.

4th in heal? How many champ can heal in this game.

By my count, 8 champions in the game who appear on the list as popular supports have abilities that can be used to heal an ally. Only two of those champions beat Sona in the healing charts: Soraka and Nami have higher healing and MUCH lower damage than Sona. The third champion ahead of Sona on the heal charts is Trundle who has purely selfish healing.

Yep and then when you put those into a real game it's all true. I and many others wouldn't be making these type of comments if we used her in a real game and realize how shit she is.

The valve to her power the her shit scaling and base. Now combine that with high mana cost and you get a shit champion. Like I said before, use W twice pre-6 and you'll be oom in no time while getting shit tier benefit from it.

Her poke game might actually be the best overall. Q's unparalleled reliability allows her to deal a lot of damage with very little risk to herself and the sustain she gets from W allows her to chip her opponent down with nothing they can really do about it.

Sona is not a bad support. She just has clear strengths and weaknesses. She has to build at least some AP in order to be useful (lichbane/echo) in addition to her supportive items. However in order to do this, you have be fed. She's kind of a feast or famine champion. You rely on your poke to help lane since you have no cc before 6, a very small base health and very low mobility (at her current state), you're kind of a sitting duck if you misposition. Sona really shines in team fights. The full effect of her aura isn't that noticeable when fighting with only 1 other person. This is kind of a case of 'hidden power' sort of thing.

... Then again, people may not like supports that don't spoon feed their adc kills. ergo blitz, thresh, leo, braum etc.

Which is kinda stupid to say she sucks, I mean c'mon, some of her items grant her AP to make her peel very good, like eye of the watchers for instance.

Exactly. Im not sure why im getting dislikes. I love sona. She's my main. Shes just not absolutely perfect. That's all.

She's a Jack of All Trades Support, poke, heal, shield, movespeed, and cc, she does it all. However, because she's a jack of all trades, she's a master of none. If you need something specific then you can find someone who does that role better than she does. I don't think she's bad at all, like most supports, some work better in or against team comps better than others.

Truly Prideful2 votes

It's not that she's bad as much as she does everything in a mediocre way. Sure you do well with her, but it doesn't change that she's not a particularly good pick compared to most supports.

Miku Hime sama5 votes

No, mediocre is how she did everything pre-4.13. As-is, Sona currently does everything worst-of. Worst damage. Worst CC. Worst healing. You want mediocrity, you play Nami. You want good, you play Bard. Worse yet, it looks like Rito is going to nerf Sona yet again, just further proving their hatred of her and desire that she continues to remain the weakest support in the entire game.

I wouldn't say they're nerfing her outright but they're trying to put more power into her E for herself while balancing it out with lowered aura size. I think the speed buff is in the right direction but the nerf is somewhat questionable. You want to make Sona an aura champ but you're gonna decrease the size of it even more? Doesn't really make sense.

Miku Hime sama5 votes

Not that it even much matters that they're nerfing her melee-range abilites to be... still melee-range. As-is, it's already unreasonable to tag allies anyway, the NOT-auras have shitty effects and short durations and unreasonable restrictions. It feels like those SECONDARY ACTIVES don't even exist anyway.

I can assure you though, it is most certainly a huge nerf. Worse yet, it stinks of a setup for them to follow it up with even more nerfs. Something along the lines of this: "We see that players are now maxing Hymn of Valor as their first skill. Because of this, we need to nerf its base damage." Mark my words, Rito will nerf her with a statement along the lines of that. They're intentionally lowering its rank 5 cooldown as an excuse to nerf it. That nerf will probably be to its base damage, in spite of the fact its already the lowest base damage of any support spell in the game. Go ahead and check for yourself, Sona is the only support in the entire game with 40 base damage on a spell. This used to be tied with Taric's E, but they buffed that base to 60. SONA LITERALLY HAS THE LOWEST SPELL DAMAGE OF ALL SUPPORTS IN THE ENTIRE GAME.

I think she's fine as is, I mean yeah I don't get a lot of kills but I help turn the tide of team fights with my ult and heals, so that's something. :/

Milodic Mellodi2 votes

I can tell I'm going to get flamed by the people who were on the last Sona topic I was on, but Sona doesn't need a buff. Seriously, her Q does loads of damage (and if you and your Bot know how to play their Champ you can both take advantage of any AAs sent your way by the opponent's Bot), her W offers both a shield and heal (which only increases with the reworked item 3174, her E is a great escape tool for your team, and her R is a wide stun (and to be honest longer and much wider than reworked Taric's E). Even without her E she still has great mobility, and even though her statistics aren't the greatest in general, they fit well with her kit with how versatile and oppressive it is. I'd say the only reason you'd be dying a lot (other than a counterpick) is because your team isn't acknowledging that you're getting ganked a lot (because you're Sona and they don't want you or your Bot to survive to snowball on them).

She is good lane support, after the laning, she is bad compared to the most other sups.
