Small Soraka buff suggestion: Speed up the heal projectile from Starcall

darkdill··58 votes·15,759 views

When you hit an enemy Champion with Starcall, there's a projectile that flies back to Soraka to heal her. Unfortunately, it often takes too long, and Soraka can die before it reaches her at long ranges.

It'd be nice if those projectiles got a speed increase. Note that I don't mean the comet itself; just the part that goes back to her to heal her.

I'm looking into a number of potential changes for her in the patch after this next one. The missile speed was actually put in so you could see how many hits you got on Q and then choose whether or not to heal an ally before they reached you (because they heal more when you're at lower health) as a small optimization. Also, having them move too fast would disrupt a lot of the clarity of the enemy seeing whether or not they were hit and where Soraka's healing is coming from. We could possibly speed them up some, but I'm not sure if that's the place I really would want to buff Soraka. Right now I'm primarily looking at her E cooldown (possibly raising it), her W range (possible increasing it) and her Q cast paradigm (changing it to fixed travel time instead of variable depending on distance. this would be a nerf at close range but a buff at far ranges and will also increase how understandable/usable the spell is for a number of players).

All of this is tentative though, but those are the things I'm looking at primarily. She might not need any of that at all but we will be testing some changes. I'm more concerned with usability/fairness than power right now because it's hard to get a good power read with all of the preseason changes being tested right now. For instance, with the new Dragon granting increasing buffs, Soraka is naturally more powerful because she allows certain junglers to take dragon extremely early with her heals.

I'm a strong believer that Starcall's graphic makes non-fixed travel time awkward for both parties. Everyone knows how Solar Flare and Aqua Prison works, Soraka's Q just fells really off.

I've already wondered. What's the reasoning behind silences preventing item actives? I played Ahri vs Soraka/Veigar and I can't count how many times I died with my Zhonya's available. (it was truly miserable).

Items count as spells, you can't use anything while silenced other than cleansing it or auto attacking or moving, unless you are in equinox which it is a continuous silence meaning you can't cleanse it unless you step out of it.

Are you kidding me? She already has one of the longest cool downs for a non ultimate spell with her E, if you raise its cool down even more she will eventually have an ultimate cd length basic ability...If you raise that CD even one more second I am not going to get the reaper skin (Just kidding I am still going to get it but I am going to be pissed)

It is an AOE silence but it is only for 1.5 seconds, it is cool, but I don't want to never be able to use it either...You guys REALLY hate silences don't you?

I read you aren't going to focus on her power right now, but I'd like to say something about her itemization: Buying health is double-edged because it costs her more health to cast Astral Infusion but she doesn't get any compensation for that extra health loss. And since, as a support, you have to buy the sightstone as early as possible, and seeing that sightstone gives you health but no health regen to compensate, it puts you in the situation where you sacrifice a lot of health without regaining it quickly enough. I think (but I might be wrong) that giving her a health ratio either on her heal (to give the extra loss purpose) or on her self-heal (to compensate the loss) could help her with this itemization issue.

darkdill2 votes

Definitely would like her heal range to be buffed a bit. It is so frustrating trying to keep up in a chase even if you get a lot of bonus MS.

Changing the Q cast paradigm would also make a lot of sense, but increasing her E's cooldown would require you to buff it in some way.

No idea why you'd increase the cd of Equinox when it's 4s longer than Aqua Prison and Howling Gale, which is a far more powerful ability that actually disables champions compared to a silence that's easy to step out of.

Please also try giving her a little utility to make her kit flow together. Normalize q's drop speed, make the sweetspot knockback slightly while the entire aoe slows (or perhaps make the ap ratio suck a little less :D). Leave E's already high cooldown alone, please. Ult is pretty much golden, and w probably wouldn't matter so much if it didn't chunk her health for so much. It's annoying to get out cc'd and outhealed by Sona and Nami all the time. I have a good win-rate with Soraka, but I find her to be frustrating to play sometimes -despite the fact that she is one of my favorite characters. Right now, it feels like you guys were so afraid of Soraka that you just overtuned all of the counterplay and weaknesses. You could have been so much more adventurous with this rework.

Soraka is fine where she is with the exception of her Equinox, as Soraka is completely vulnerable and is now incapable of actually holding on her own. She also has poor wave clear until late game, she is easily countered by morel which gives the enemies more CDR along with stopping Soraka from doing her job. Why buff equinox? Because the enemy is just fine with walking over the supposely choke point at will for the given 2-3 seconds to actually strangle them to the ground. Q is just fine where it is, if it receives a buff she will become far too OP. Q gives a slow, healing and apply's item passive at a safe distance!

In my opinion, just decrease the time given to strangle on e. And CLARITY. Yeah i tend to like when my passive will actually go off without having to look at my champ a good distance away, maybe do something on the Mini map? Plz?

Edit 1: Soraka is one of my most played supports at this time, jfyi

Hey Vesh,

Having played about 35 games as support Soraka post-rework, I just want to throw my 2rp into the ring.

When evaluating a champion's kit, you obviously know very well that "fun" is not comparable to "damage," "mana cost," "cooldown duration," or any of the other values that dictate a champion's overall power. I assume that's a big part of why you worked on Soraka's new kit - she's substantially more enjoyable to play following this rework. Even if, as you say, Soraka might not need any of the aforementioned changes in terms of her in-game strength (perhaps you are already happy with her new pick/win rates), I do think that she would massively benefit from another increase to her "fun" levels.

Having to move in close to an allied champion in order to transfer your health to the target creates FAR more interesting game mechanics than the previous Soraka's kit - but proves frustrating and feels anti-fun in certain circumstances. For example, I've often found that moving up to heal the frontline can actually be a greater risk than potential reward in that you can easily end up dying without accomplishing much at all, leaving your backline without a support. In Soraka's current form, the famous line displayed on the supercomputer's screen in John Badham's 1983 film, WarGames, sometimes proves true: "the only winning move is not to play."

Therefore, I strongly feel that you should internally test increasing the range on Soraka's W with nerfs to other areas of her kit in order to try to strike a balance between the increased range and the strength of heal. Obviously changes to range are difficult to balance in relation to other areas of a kit (like in Lucian's rework, where the reduction of his AA range was answered with too many buffs) - but I would be hard-pressed to think of a design reason to obstruct making a champion more fun to play as; because if we're not having fun, why are we playing League of Legends?

Thanks for reading.

Best,

Earl

Hey Earl!

In development I had to walk a very fine line with the W range to get the accessibility I wanted for the character while preserving functionality. Because we were introducing a true healer into League, Morello, myself, and a lot of our live designers wanted to be very careful with how safe she was allowed to be (nothing more frustrating than a safe healer). We might have pushed too far here, and another 50 range might do wonders while still keeping her vulnerable. It's a really crazy buff though, and I expect that she would need a nerf elsewhere to compensate (base stats perhaps, but still exploring all of our options). Glad you're enjoying her though! I promise I'll keep working to make her the best she can be for League (by best I mean fun... not powerful :p )

I feel that you guys are being overly cautious with Soraka's rework. Yeah, a safe healer is extremely unfun to play, but she's a support that the current meta is very disapproving of: she is neither an engage support or a disengage support. Her CC is very weak and easy to dodge, and she herself is quite squishy (and is discouraged from building health). Healing is the only thing she provides to the team, and since you guys are doing a great job at making her healing involve danger and interaction with the enemy, it means that Soraka requires a lot of skill that doesn't really correlate with her impact on the game.

From what I've been playing, Soraka excels when her team is self-sufficient. This means that her ADC needs to be safe and/or self-peeling (Ezreal, Caitlyn, maybe Jinx), and the other players need to be able to engage/disengage on their own. If these (extremely rare) conditions are met, Soraka shines brightly, being able to keep her entire team alive throughout an entire teamfight and easily pushing her team towards a great advantage.

However, if these conditions are not met (because most people love to pick very squishy and unsafe champions that require a lot of support babysitting), Soraka's effectiveness compared to other supports falls drastically. She has virtually no peel, engage or pick potential, she can't heal people who are so squishy that they die in one hit, and she can't deal with high-damage, dive-heavy comps. She also struggles when her entire team is made of squishies (Riven top, Yi jungle, Lucian ADC and Zed mid, for example, your typical soloqueue comp) and she can't figure out who is the highest priority target to heal.

To be honest, I feel Soraka needs the W range buff, but she cannot afford any more nerfs. In fact, I'd say that 50 units of W casting, while very welcome, will not solve any of the above problems. She needs to be so good at what she does that she can actually compete with supports that offer heavy CC on top of utility, such as Morgana, Nami, Sona, Thresh, Janna and Leona. If you guys don't want to give her reliable hard CC or tankiness, that's fine, but she definitely needs more than what she already has in order to be a viable competitive pick. While the other supports I mentioned fit into any teamcomp, the fact that Soraka needs a specific teamcomp tailored after her indicates that she's not in a strong place right now.

Because we were introducing a true healer into League, Morello, myself, and a lot of our live designers wanted to be very careful with how safe she was allowed to be... ...We might have pushed too far here, and another 50 range might do wonders while still keeping her vulnerable.

I understand what your intent here is, but IMO this doesn't solve her problem, and may make laning more passive. For laning purposes, her W range is good. For teamfights, it's abysmal and suicidal. If gapclosers were less common then 50 range would be a big deal, but that's not the case; 500 range with no peels, no CC, no tankiness, no escape is still suicide. Teams peel for the ADC, not the support.

I don't know, I don't have an answer. IMO W could use a range buff because Soraka is way too fragile to have her main gameplay mechanic at such a short range, however increasing the range just returns her to the "unfun passive healbot" status she once had.

Personally I think you should have made her heal be more flexible, like the travel time on Starcall or Xerath's/Vi's charging Q. Short range heals would work as they do now, whereas long range heals would increase the cooldown and cause more self-damage.

(nothing more frustrating than a safe healer).

I disagree actually, there are plenty of more frustrating things in this game than a fragile healing champ that kills itself. Reset assassins are there at the top of anti-fun bullshit.

It's a really crazy buff though, and I expect that she would need a nerf elsewhere to compensate (base stats perhaps, but still exploring all of our options).

I don't think so; you're being too cautious.

Remember, initially:

  • E did no damage, then you gave it some huge numbers
  • Passive had her lose bonus armor, then you removed it

Neither of these massive buffs made her overpowered, obnoxious, or even remotely annoying.

OH! I have idea! You are right, straight up add range would be too big of a boon in lane, My idea is to give her an ult passive that interacts with her heal, like Sivir's Ult does with ricochet.

With each rank of Soraka's Ultimate, it adds 20 (more or less) range to her heal. That way, she wont be overbearing in lane, and can scale into team-fights.

You were overly cautious before, and you kind of still are. Certainly better than being reckless though. :p 50 range is a very welcome buff, and it'll help reduce incidental AoE damage to her, but it's really not a "crazy" buff. It's something she likely should've had from the start. Backline champions do not function well on the frontline for obvious reasons, especially not Soraka.

Legostrike1 votes

If your going to need cool down on e then please make it at least poke viable. The only reason I know it damages is because I've damaged with it.

balbraaksel1 votes

I think you should consider sticking a healing percentage on her passive on W because as she is now, buying health on her is actually hurting her more than helping because the restoring health percentage from the passive on W gets lower the more health she has, as she is now. Ruby Sightstone is currently a horrible item on her because of the health it gives.

Please, either give her flat health costs or % healing on the passive on W.

Fashion Mage1 votes

Personally I think all three of your proposed changes sound wonderful. Equinox is probably her strongest ability besides her ult, which is unusual considering that she's supposed to be the best at healing. Her W would be her best ability, but it only works well if the enemy decides to not blow her up when she's using it (that or she'll just die to AoE). I like the idea of her Q being worse at close-range but more reliable at long-range, since going into close-range as Soraka is the exact thing one should be avoiding with her. Makes things less clunky too.

I don't think the HP cost should be changed personally. I really, really wouldn't want to play against a tanky Soraka that can heal a lot. Building Sightstone only increases her heal cost by 15, which isn't really such a big deal. Either way the problem doesn't really lie in your design of Soraka, it's more about the lack of sightstone variation (eg. AP Sightstone, CDR Sightstone, etc), but that sort of stuff is more in Xypherous' area.

Strangely enough i think Raka is in a pretty good status, minus some small blips here or there. Q's variable time length REALLY helps when i want to protect my carry at close range, and over time i've gotten used to the timing differences. Hitting it feels great at all levels, and really cements her power in counter engages. The slow part of her long ranged Q i feel is justified by the amount of harass she can consistantly do from such a far range. It creates some really interesting zoning potential that I've really enjoyed getting used to.

I also completely understand the rationale behind the healing projectiles too. If i hit multiple targets with my Q i can get some pretty crazy amounts of hp back, and working around the travel times helps me optimize my healing, while also giving me much needed areas of weakness for when enemies come after me (Which they should given my shiny new importance as a pain in the ass healer) If Raka is too easily able to regain her Hp then she wont die, which needs to happen since she's so important now. a larger healing Radius would be quite nice though, since it can be outright oppressive at times when my teammates are always barely out of range since i need to be forearm deep in their healthpool to get them back to fighting stance. Again of course it can't be raised much since she needs to be vulnerable while healing.

Equinox is really strong, but its already long Cd makes it super punishing if you miss it, especially since its soooo hard to get the root off in any practical situation, and is one of the bigger areas i feel raka has problems. Mobile carries get out of its range and straight to killing me or my carry with hardly any delay, and only really feel the pain when i have allies to keep them in the circle.

In regards to things i think new raka really suffers from i'd say she's a little too dependant on itemization to get catches (Long range Qs are nearly impossible to hit sweet spots on purpose, so i get FQC or Rylais to improve my catch chances) and that her passive has some unintended problems in revealing information to her enemies.

On occasion my jungler is low hp and fighting like golems or something. I randomly get my speed boost in a direction, which enemies can readily see to know that not only is someone near me, but that they're ripe for the killing. Since its a straight line, they also get a damn good sense of what direction and where my teammate may be, when otherwise they'd have no knowledge of it whatsoever. Its a bit problematic, but i'd like to see if something could be done to protect Raka's teammates.

I think the real problem currently for her is that she gets outhealed by Sona...and all that while Sona offers a lot more than heal and is fairly save while doing so, while Soraka has to go in very close to heal. So there´s no reason to pick Soraka ever if you want a healer.

Another problem with Soraka currently for me is that her silence really doesn´t communicate it´s effect very well visually, making it quite frustrating to play against.

Increase her W range, YES. I have mixed feelings about her Q, since I really like that getting up close and personal rewards you in some way... Would love scaling health costs on her W as someone mentioned, 10% is too much for early game. This could be fixed if getting bonus health (cough SGHTSTONE cough) would help her heals in some way. Extra cooldown time on her E... NO.

This so hard. It happens to me like every second match. People just don't understand how bad her heal range is.

RoyceRollin1 votes

Hey I like the idea of normalizing the q speed but have you thought of increasing the slow aoe of the spell the closer it is to soraka? I mean the small area thats in the middle of the spell that is basically impossible to hit currently unless they are on top of you (because then its almost instant) so that it is still a realiable slow at close range when you are vulnerable while very hard to slow at long range when your poking and such.

Krys Star14 votes

That and make the mana cost on Starcall more doable. 70 is a lot at rank 1 when you're expending 10% health to heal an ally. Or just give her heal a scaling health cost. 6 / 7 / 8 / 9 / 10%

I'd like that reduced mana cost at early ranks.

or just make it instant

Quantum Weeb7 votes

I'd prefer not to have this. The thing I like about current Starcall is that if you hit and know you're going to get healed in 0.5 seconds, it's a great time to W an ally for a greater Q heal. If it was instant, that'd not longer be possible unless you heal before the projectile actually hits.

No, this is not needed in the least. The speed is fine, and it's not really a projectile. That's just an animation, it cannot be blocked (try it with wind wall).

The change Soraka really needs is to her passive. Make the arc wider, so that players can take more paths towards their target. As someone else mentioned, this is particularly troublesome in the jungle.

She's quite strong actually if you take the time to get used to her new kit. Placement of Equinox is key in teamfights, but the amount of sustain she offers the team is bananas. Likewise she can actually do a surprising amount of damage both in lane and in teamfights. Long range too! -Cross map Cock-blocks -HpS that Jesus wishes he had -Brilliant counter-engage -Throws bananas of destiny

In regards to the topic at hand though, i feel that it could be nice, but i think the current projectile speed is justified do to the amount of hp you can get back with it. Just the other day I managed to hit three people who were standing a little too close to each other, immediately regained about 60% of my max hp. Tbh i'm almost afraid of Soraka being buffed in this state, because she's already so powerful, and it would likely just lead to nerfs if she became popular. I think she's in a good state right now, She lacks alot of the playmaking skills and reliable cc other supports have, but she epitomizes the healer paradigm, and is one of the first supports that should almost be prioritized before the carries due to her sustain in prolonged fights.

she's supposed to be really vulnerable if she gets jumped on and insta-heals would give her a lot more fighting power in close quarters. I imagine if they were going to buff soraka they'd look at reducing her spell costs or increasing her damage/healing values (i'd like to see some of the hp she spends on heal converting into healing for her ally as right now building health can really hurt her role as a health battery)

Kiggen1 votes

If anything, fix the delay on her Ult...

My suggestion would be to balance her self-healing, and to add a different source of self-healing primarily being minions. This would add a lot of different variations. to her kit. (Jungle Soraka for example), It would make her a more sustainable champion in lane, while allowing her not to be focused out in teamfights as easily.

Completely agree with the Q heal missile buff. What I've been saying since her rework hit live is that she needs slightly better scalings on Q and E. Even by going ap oriented support you can't ever scatch a Zyra. Other than that I perfectly fine now that my main is back in action ^^

Duke Anax1 votes

I don't mind the speed of the back heal as much, however it is actually possible to run out of the it's range.

Like the heal missile has the same range as starcall itself, so if you run back after casting it, you won't get the heal.

I don't really know why you wanna change Soraka, I think she's just fine. Her heals are awesome and her silence is so meaningful in teamfights. i feel with the stabilization of q and speeding up it's heal projectile, it becomes a nod to Vladimir.

I look at it and see a long range aoe Vlad q (which is as amazing as it sounds).

Depends on what cast time they decide to stabilize it to.

(I also realize why Raka is eligible for a soul reaper skin. Bravo rito. Its a nice fitting theme.)

TLDR; These Q changes seem like a better vlad q to me.

OwlMechanic1 votes

I think a reasonable solution to her problems would be to return her an extremely temporary shield on healing a champ, (think victor) she still suffers the penalty of being low health from having used heal, she still needs to get in range, but she isn't the extreme liability against opponents who can dodge starcal (leaving her at constant extreme low hp) that she is now. What do you all think?

TheStormTroopers1 votes

Ill mainly be repeating what everyone else says by this point. The passive is nice but I hate seeing the arrow when I'm still half the map away from the target. I do not know the window to have the arrow and when the speed buff is given. The idea behind making the arrow red when in that range is nice, maybe more of a scaling color change from yellow to red as it shift towards red your speed increases. Her Q is nice kind of obnoxious at range being it takes longer to land but I'm okay with that. The heal from it should have a flat time to reach her though, trying to run away when enemies autos are hitting before the health is received is frustrating. Her W is not a very fun skill to have. I agree with the idea of her using her own health to heal others but 10% is excessive when you don't have very much to begin with. The range is so small when even trying to get to a team member during a fight may end up in their death. There needs to be some good if the range is going to be limited to heavily. The E I barely touch the thing since its massive CD and little good unless they have a Katairina jumping you. R still good just wish it healed faster.

Xulsigae1 votes

I may be late to the party and slightly off topic, but I feel that it's very hard to build Soraka in a satisfying way now. I never feel that my items are doing much good now. Building resistances on a back line support, building health with max health costs, building regen with most regen items coming with health, AP on an already very squishy champ...just feels bad and unintuitive. I think she's also one of the few champs that can't cast a spell at a certain amount of health, which is very frustrating if you've been managing your mana but healing your teammates regularly. Not being able to heal a teammate while having plenty of mana is bleh to me. "Heal me!" "Can't, I'm OOH." "OOH?" "Out of health." Other healing supports feel much better to build on due to their range and utility (Sona has healing boosted by target's missing health AND a shield) and Nami has harass and heal and speedboost all in one, or tankiness and CC (Alistar, Taric (that self heal is quite nice)). Builds on them make more sense without being punishing. They may not have sheer amount of healing Soraka has (healing someone so much is quite satisfying), but I don't feel scared to play them.
