Riven Rework Concept

Passive: Runic Combo Blade: Each time Riven casts an ability, her blade stores a Rune Counter. If she lands a basic attack, all her cool downs are reduced by 0.5 seconds. 1 second if that attack hit an enemy.

Riven is a combo based champion. So I wanted her to have combo'd abilities. Her current state, she is way too strong because her combos deal so much damage. With this change, I want her to make a lot of combos, but I don't want her damage output for that combo to increase if they do that combo effectively.

Q: Broken Wings: Riven dashes forward slightly, cleaving the area in front of her. (Dash is smaller than current Q) for the next 4 seconds, if Riven casts another ability, she can activate this ability again up to 2 additional times. These additional abilities do not grant Rune Counters.

Riven's 3 strike combo is part of her character. I wanted to keep it like that, but to also utilize it better for combos than for moving around faster. This change will allow her to continue dealing damage, but will hinder her mobility.

W: Rune Strike: Riven uppercuts a small area in front of her. Enemy champions hit are knocked up slightly.

This is where I moved her knock-up because I feel Ki-Burst doesn't really feel like an ability Riven would use. I can better imagine her to uppercut her opponent with her blade than releasing a magic ability.

E: Valor: Riven does a 360 with her blade outstretched, blocking any projectile that would hit her at that time. Enemies hit by the blade take a little damage.

Spin 2 win. With removing the shield, I wanted Riven to still have some defense, which is why I gave her a wind wall that only stays for that INSTANT. It should only last for 0.25 seconds.

R: Shattered Legacy: Upon activation, her sword is reconstructed with pieces that are transparent. Her next abilities cast within 4 seconds have enhanced effects. Additionally, she gains AD. (just like in live) Broken Wings: You travel a little further and each strike knocks enemies up for 0.3 seconds. Rune Strike: Riven dashes forward now, and also has more range in the AoE. Knock up lasts longer as well. Valor: Riven does a 720, with the wind wall lasting as long as the animation. Also applies the damage twice.

_I liked Riven having the ability to reforge her blade, but I didn't like how it had a ranged execute cone... So instead this ability enhances her killing power as well as making her combos stronger in that form. _

This guts her. A large portion of her damage (passive and ult reactivation) was removed, her CC got cut in half in most cases, and her defensive ability and main mobility was removed and replaced with a token ability that does not help her. She relies on a shield that way she can actually absorb damage in lane and the mobility to reach someone without having to use all of her main damage spell to get there. You removed both of those for an extremely weak windwall WHICH DOES NOT HELP HER. Let me repeat: removing her only way to reach someone without wasting all her damage getting there is already a horrible nerf. Removing her shield is also a horrible nerf, as now she just has to cry and hope the enemy is extremely reliant on a single projectile (or is very bad) to even hope to exist in lane. Together those 2 are a literal gutting of her.

@1: Doesn't include numbers. This is meant to show a mechanic, not actual damage values. @2: Without her ult she has 1 CC. With her ult active, she has 4 CC abilities. @3: Her mobility right now is what makes her toxic in the game. She literally had 4 dashes. That is not healthy. This lets her keep those dashes, but limits them a bit. @4: It actually can help her. You just need to play her a little different. Against ranged she would be scary, but against melee she wouldn't be as scary. @5: She relies on that shield so she can soak damage and kill people before they can deal much damage. Unlike a shield, having a projectile block allows her to block any single attack that would deal any number of damage, compared to a shield that can only block a flat amount. It's a situational thing, but in more cases, it would be better because this can also block CC. @6: Play smart. That's how the game is supposed to be. @7: Read 5 again. @8: Hence the reason her passive now reduces her cool downs.

perhaps you should change her E to also block melee auto attacks as this would allow for even more levels of counter play and mind games since most champs can't hit 2 times in 0.5 seconds.

I like this idea, however I think it might break her E. Though, to be frank, I'm not fully sure.

break it how? I thought they would just give her the same invincibility thing Fiora has but without the stun.

Seeing as how something may seem underpowered on paper could make it stupidly overpowered in game, and vice versa. That's why.

  1. Let me point out her current passive is %AD (going to 50 or 55 at max level) on every auto after doing an ability. With her kit that is 6 charges, or 300% (or 330% if it's 55 instead of 50) AD. Additionally, her passive A) stacks, B) does damage directly, and C) requires her to do combos in a fluid and simplistic way while rewarding her for doing so. The passive you propose must both give comparable damage (~300%/330% AD) and do so in a better way than the live one, which does not look to be the case. It's change for the sake of change.

  2. No, without her ult she has 1 CC. With her ult she actually gets CC comparable to her old NORMAL Q instead of 1 CC. Combined that knock up duration SLIGHTLY exceeds her old Q's duration (old Q ~.75 seconds), only you made her require her ultimate to be able to have most of her CC back.

  3. ... 260 cast range 10 / 30 / 50 / 70 / 90 (+ 40 / 45 / 50 / 55 / 60% AD) For comparison she has ONE other damage ability she can normally use in lane (W, leveled last, 50-170 damage +100% bonus AD). If she has to use Q to dash (which is 3 of those "4" dashes) she has no damage or hard CC to do anything: she WILL lose that trade and have to back off unless she was so ahead that just autoattacks would do you in (in which case the opponent greatly fucked up). Her dashing is not toxic in any way and is one of the few reasons she is even viable in lane (Q dash provides trade offs due to being required for damage but maybe needed for mobility, E being used as a dash gives mobility but makes the short duration shield less useful, E being used as a shield means the dash might be wasted, etc.). Removing her main method of reaching someone with no compensation does not balance them.

As a slight side note, do you then consider Irelia toxic because she can theoretically Q 7-8 times in a row in lane? Is Kindred broken because she can Q a lot after using W? Or is it dash distance, in which case does Renekton's EE having almost the same range as Riven's QQQE make Renekton broken? Is tp overpowered since it can go cross map?

  1. No it doesn't. It's a tiny duration windwall that presumably immobilizes her while it is being used. You removed her main gapcloser and defensive tool for a shitty windwall THAT DOES NOT HELP HER. Let me repeat this, again. This does. Not. Help. Her. This does not make up for removing her shield and dash. This guts her. Any ranged champion can now infinitely kite her or just not care about her. She has to use 2-3 Q's to reach someone, which is NORMALLY almost all of her damage. Due to your bullshit Q changes so it can't be recast unless her other skills are used she has to QWQEQ to FREAKING TOUCH THE OTHER LANER. She has to use all of her damage, CC, and survavibility to get one single autoattack one someone. Even then, now what? Melee champions all have some way of farming from a distance (Mundo Q, Shen Q, Gangplank Q) or due to Riven losing her main defense and CC can easily massacre her in melee (Riven, Garen, Darius, Malphite, Irelia). That tiny duration windwall won't do shit to help her against melee, and due to having to use her W and E just to reuse Q to reach the other laner won't do shit against ranged.

  2. She relies on that shield because her health regen is put at complete shit levels (one of the lowest in game: only Mordekaiser, Soraka, and maybe Rengar have worse) and she is a melee fighter with none of the other defensive tools normally found in the class (most melee fighters have some form of extreme survival tools like Master Yi's Q untargetability and W damage reduction, or Tryndamere's immunity to death, or Yasuo's Windwall and shield). She relies on that shield to even have a chance at winning lane, as otherwise every trade would automatically be a loss for her.

  3. ...Oh sure, "playing smart" is going to help someone play a fragile melee fighter and even try to go even in lane as someone farms from 550+ range away and now has to use their entire kit just to get in range to autoattack (and when they get there they have no damage or CC because they had to use it all to get there to begin with).

  4. Reducing her cooldowns by 1 second isn't going to help when she just used everything and has 3+ seconds before anything is up while getting the shit beat out of her.

I don't think Riven will ever need a rework of this scale, her abilities and kit are fine as they are currently. A lot of players love playing as and against her, with me personally being the latter.
