Can cdr become a rarer stat

JhomasTefferson··112 votes·3,770 views

Cdr is too easy to overinvest in. with 3 core items on most supports you're already over the cdr cap. Then, with the abundance of cdr, it's hard not to invest in even more, meaning you're investing in a stat you don't need. Maybe take like, athene's and another 20% cdr item and make them ten percent, and take cdr off of gold coin and put the investment into mana regen?

supports scale with CDR, it's pretty much their core stat in many ways. they aren't going to completely rid of the CDR of a support item just because you don't like it. Athene's could have 10% of it's CDR removed and put that power elsewhere in the item but that's about it

JhomasTefferson1 votes

thats the only one though. The other support items build out of kindelgem and codex. They should be the go to for cdr. something about diversity.

sorry but no, supports scale with CDR support items are going to have CDR attached to them. What diversity are you even talking about? removing 10% CDR on an item? supports are not even going to look at the item unless it's hilariously broken at that point. Coin is having issues with being picked to begin with that's why it got changed the most in this previous patch and you want it to become even a worst pick over the other two support items? supports want CDR simple as that

1011001110003 votes

People pick coin even less since the update, so I don't see how that point stands. Coin just needed a utility buff pre-Quest rework, which it obviously didn't get.

The issue is that AP/utility supports have such a high number of cdr items available to them that they're prone to going over the cap, so they don't end up buying support items partially due to the nature of cdr as a wasted stat above 40/45%. Not to mention a variety of cdr items for support have lower stats in other areas that could be increased if the cdr was reduced or cut out entirely.

Let's say you're playing Karma

Your build: item 3092 item 3107 item 3158

You're already getting 30% cdr. You can only build 10% more.

Technically speaking, these are the remaining cdr support items: item 3504 item 3222 item 3050 item 3174 , but you can't build Athene's without immediately wasting cdr.

These are your non-cdr options:

I mean, sure, you can build the tank items that have utility, but these are also prone to having cdr, so you can't build all 3 without wasting stats: item 3001 item 3194 item 3110

The non-cdr tank itemization with utility is vast though: item 3190 . (You only build Locket , so there's nothing to see here.)

Everything else is just essentially full damage or pure tank itemization that you don't really want as a squishy utility support.

The problem is that ranged supports don't have a variety of non-cdr options for their remaining build that isn't just straight damage. I mean, item 3089 item 3285 item 3165 actually see use in Karma builds.

The OP wants cdr to become a rarer stat because he believes that cutting out cdr will give supports more non-cdr options. The issue is that there is very little cdr that can actually be cut easily. Instead, he should be asking for more non-cdr options for ranged support. Or better options, considering how core Redemption/Locket is for EVERY support.

But then mages will abuse those non-cdr utility, so supports are probably going to be shafted.

Sp33d Zer01 votes

To be fair... these are your non CDR support options:item 3109 item 2045 item 3190 item 3512

All of these are 100% valid support options if you don't want CDR

Also, why wouldn't you want tank optimization if you are playing a squishy support? The whole point of being a support with high CDR is to use your abilities as often as possible, and tank stats only help you live longer to accomplish that goal.

Also, AP has support scaling like the shield level and speed up for karma, so it is still not even close to the worst thing you COULD build on her.

1011001110002 votes

item 3109 : Literally half as effective in both healing and damage reduction if you're ranged.

item 2045 : Not if you build an Eye to save a slot. My example for Karma should've been an Eye.

item 3190 : I already said every support builds this.

item 3512 : It's so bad, if you ignore Bloodrazor Enchantment as a stand-alone, the item is literally in the bottom 10 of least unpopular items, and its limited use still barely nets it a 52% winrate rounded up. The fact that its split pushing power scales on %max hp, this item does NOT give hp, and squishy supports do not build any significant amount of hp means this item's utility is relegated to its Point Runner passive, which is only good on splitpushers.

Most pure tank itemization provides nothing but resistances, and those which do provide utility of some kind are also packed with cdr, so you will be wasting gold in cdr stats.

Like your ADC, you should not be in the front line tanking damage. Sure 1 Tank item is fine, but that tank item will be item 3190 95% of the time because the rest of your build looks something like this:

item 2301 item 3158 item 3107 item 3504 [Insert non-cdr mage item here]

Athene's as a support item fails because it has 20% cdr. Consider that your support item will build into 10%, Redemption is a mandatory 10%, building Athene's 20% locks you out of the BETTER utility brought by other items because they have less cdr as stand-alone items.

The cdr in support itemization needs to be redistributed differently. Putting it on every item limits the actual non-cdr options a support might want to build because of the necessity of cdr as a stat.

The problem here is that there's no easy way to deal with this. If you shove all the cdr into two items (e.g. Support item and Ruby being 40% cdr) and take it out of all other support itemization, then it all has to compete with non-cdr high AP items.

If you just put 5-10% on everything you want to be for utility/poke supports, then everything has to be rebalanced to be competitive enough for item slots, which might make it competitive for mages as well.

The fact of the matter is supports need to scale better in ways besides AP before support itemization can be both GOOD and UNIQUE to supports. And until that happens, cdr is gonna be in a garbage state.

ModAcademy Kayn9 votes

Why though? Why should any stat be rare? No other stat in the game is rare. For mages, tanks, and Fighters, CDR is one of the most important things they need, as it lowers the time between their rotations/survival. It's as much a scaling stat as Crit Chance is for ADC's, but I don't see people asking for Crit to be made rare.

Mister Support23 votes

Because none of those really have caps that are easy to achieve and therefore make later purchases inefficient

ModAcademy Kayn6 votes

Unless you're a support, you're pretty hard pressed to get locked into a build that gives over 40% (or 45%) CDR though. And even then, CDR isn't that expensive of a stat if you look at it, 10% CDR is 247.5 gold.

The only possible build I see a mage getting locked into 50% CDR build, would be Viktor with Lich Bane, Morelleo, Banshee and Zhoynas, so you have like 247.5 gold wasted. Oh well. I got to go clear another minion wave to make that gold up.

Mithras3 votes

Only supports run into excessive CDR situations, and their items are all extremely gold efficient, anyway

ModAcademy Kayn4 votes

I'd argue that with Void Staff also burning through base MR, a lot of flat pen isn't exactly nessecary for mages.

Also Mage pen gives 15 Flat.

HaIlMonitor4 votes

There is way more armor in the game, natural or simply how much the items give though. And even with that not all of those items are good all of the time, and most ad champs dont even use them.

Ya idk man.

HaIlMonitor4 votes

Cool, you found them all. Look at how much armor the items gives vs MR items give. Also there is no item for magic damage like Tabi, that cuts all autos down by 10% right away.

Also I said base stats and just using the first two alphabetically: Level 18 Aatrox has 89 armor 53.4 MR level 18 Ahri has 80.4 armor 38.5 MR

MrHaZeYo3 votes

Most team comps feature more AD oriented champions. AP champions are also gated by CDs where as most AD champs are not.

Let's look at Shens build from SKT vs WE though as it is a pretty normal top lane tank build top. item 3748 item 3065 item 3190 item 3026 item 3111 item 3082

That's One offensive Item that gives HP 3 MR items with two of them offering Armor too 1 MR/HP item 1 Armor item (W/e he decided to build the Wardens Mail into)

That's enough MR on a tank to not be able to do much to him as a magic based Champ (Gailio/Orianna) Even with Ori having a Void. Sorc Pen, and Liandyrs.

That's what 400 HP + 500 HP + (Assuming Wardens was going to a Randiuns) 500 HP = 1,400 bonus HP 30 Armor + 50 Armor + 60 Armor for 140 Bonus Armor 50 MR + 30 MR + 60 MR + 40 MR for 180 Bonus MR.

Soooo, You're point is kinda moot, as you can easily itemize all 3 Tank stats pretty evenly.

You are right as item 3194 is the only item close to Tabis in the passive, and you're right they aren't the same, but again their are far more AA based AD champs in games then AP champions so Tabis have their deserved spot in the game.

AninLegions7771 votes

"Gated by CD" Lool. This is a season 4 excuse. Stop using it. Shen had to build 3 MR items to counter Magic damage and I guarantee you it wasn't still enough over a long fight.

MrHaZeYo1 votes

In what world is that still not the case? Ori at 40% CDR still has to wait 4 seconds between W casts, and yes, yes it was more than enough to basically not take damage from her.

AninLegions7771 votes

Yeah 4 secs but her Q, W and R aren't abilities? Also considering they hit more than basic attacks, it's understandable.

MrHaZeYo1 votes

It's actually 5 seconds on W. Her Q is on ~1.9 CD so I didn't use it, E is on a 5 second CD as well. So ya she's very much gated by CDs unless she's towards the frontline throwing AAs out.

Mages will always be gated by CDs, even with CDR being slightly easier to achieve now.

OyddAWqJ5r3 votes

Also for your Tabi argument we have item 3194 .

Is there an armor option that completely negates a single attack? item 3102 Is there an armor option that removes CC? item 3140 Is there an armor item that amplifies magic damage dealt to enemies nearby? item 3001

Comparing various effects is pointless. They specialize in different things.

"No other stat in the game is rare." Magic pen.

Magic pen, particularly flat pen, is kept low because you can't reduce a champion below 0 MR (wits end being the only exception). The reality is, because many champions don't have scaling MR as opposed to everyone having scaling armor, a large abundance of magic pen would be both inefficient but likely equally broken vs squishies.

AMYS GRAVE2 votes

Let me turn it around on you. Why sould 40% CDR be the norm for most builds, and why aren't there tradeoffs for getting it?

Mira Arya Enthe1 votes

Why have a tradeoff if everyone gets it?

AMYS GRAVE1 votes

Is everyone supposed to get it by default?

If everyone gets it why not just lower cooldowns globaly and remove the stat from items entirely?

Mira Arya Enthe1 votes

If everyone is suppose to get stats why not remove items and just give them their necessary stats xD it is so it is gated by gold.

AMYS GRAVE1 votes

But if CDR isn't gated by gold other stats would be, and you would have the exact same result. You're not adding any degrees of freedom to the equation by making CDR a stat to buy if everyone gets it anyway.

Stusauce3 votes

That is exactly what I was saying to my friends the other day. I play top and nearly every build I use has a free 40% CDR thrown in on top of the combat stats I was already going to build. Going Renekton and building item 3071 item 3065 item 3812 are standard because they all work so well with his kit, but on top of that, it caps you out on CDR too. You can name just about any other bruiser top laner and that build would be decent enough on them. There shouldn't be 0 trade-off for building max of one stat. It should cost you something, or make it a choice between stats. "Do I want 40% CDR or do I want to invest in more damage/tankiness? Nevernmind lul I can do all three anyway!"

AninLegions7772 votes

Listen to yourself. If it's important to everyone, then reducing the CDR on items won't benefit anyone. That way league becomes less spammy and more thoughtful.

ModAcademy Kayn1 votes

What? No, reduce CDR and ADC's and Carries become stronger, people who don't rely on CDs to do their job properly. It becomes hit or miss gameplay, which isn't good design. 'Either I hit my combo, or I'm useless for the rest of the fight". God Forbid we allow mages to contribute more than their key ability in fights to help influence the outcome.

AninLegions7773 votes

Wrong. Plain wrong. I've been playing since S3. ADC's didn't have 1 single % of CDR. Mages got 40 with Morello and Athene's rush. Game was wayyyyy more balanced. You have no experience so don't argue.

They do. I agree that supp tanks need more. However, mage supports and true supports (janna and soraka) have an overabundance of it

Make the tank supports buy redemption like a real support! /s

SweedishGunner9 votes

They already do. ._.

Alientcp2 votes

Nope. There are general tank items that provide cdr, but its quite the feat to get them since you have less income. tank support need their own items (not randuins nor thornmail, those are general tank, usually for top or jg) that provide utility and that are cheaper.

Anu3isII2 votes

Redemption is literally bought for the active, which has a huge impact in teamfights if placed and used in the right moment. In combination with Locket, you can make your own team unkillable in teamfights.

People build Redemption+Locket on almost every Support champion, as this combination provides a ton of defensive stats that no other item can bring to the whole team.

You see Janna building Redemption and Locket, you see Zyra (a Mage "Support") building them, and you also see Nautilus building them.

Maybe you didn't want to negate the fact that SweedishGunner brought: Redemption is bought on all categories of Supports. I agree Tank Supports need more items, but that won't change how powerful it is, and how much it limits your builds alongside Locket.

Morgan le Fey2 votes

Yeah, other support items seriously need a boost to make them competitive. I'm really happy to have a support item other than Sightstone that makes a significant difference, but I would love options. >.>
