Few things and themes I think would be cool to see in League in the future

ThePikol··15 votes·10,634 views

So here's the list of things, themes and champion features I think we lack in League and are waiting for Riot to give us in the future:

--- old lady - this one is requested from time to time here on Boards. A lot of players would like a bad ass grandma or an old witch. And I mean old visually, not like Lissandra or Camille who are old but look young. --- fat female champion - we have Gragas, Urgot, Tahm, Ornn, Bard as fat champions but they are all male or undefined. There was also a concept for a Storm lady some time ago that I liked http://i.imgur.com/grekodz.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/J3oPJVl.png

--- a portal themed champ - A portal like skill, place two portals, all projectiles are transferd from one to another, go in and out of portls, mobile, travel through map. Think Yugo from Wakfu, Jumper, Portal games. Unfortunately very unlikely since we already have Bard E and Zoe R --- a champ with a skill that absorb a projectie and return it back to enemy with increased power --- a gas/swarm champ - no defined body, but a cloud or a swarm of bugs like --- a parasite champ - can attach to an ally and/or enemy. When on ally it can't move on it's own but provide utilities, can use spells. We had Kai'sa with a similar theme recently so I doubt we would get it anytime soon --- a sound/voice champ - a Banshee or just a champ that uses sounds to attack. Sona is and Aura mage, not a sound one --- a mirror/disuise champ/illusion champ- can copy enemy spells, take his form, affect enemy vision, maybe distort it or create visions of something? --- a mind control/ psychic champ - all about mind tricks, maybe have an ability that let me control enemy champion while mine is left vulnerable (something like Ino from Naruto series, when she transfered her mind to opponent?). --- a champion with 3 sets of skills rotating, like Jayce but with extra mode --- a puppet master - have a puppet in front of him that attacks, can be send short distances and then go back. Well we have Azir, but he creates his soldiers and can move them only once. A puppet would be attached to his master all the time. Maybe when destroyed master would be left vulnerable with weaker set of skills and had to wait few sec to get it back?

--- a Void supp champ - support is the only role left without dedicated Void champ. I think it would fit with parasite theme --- an assasin Yordle

What do you guys think? Can we see any of these in the future? What are your ideas what could be added?

--- fat female champion - we have Gragas, Urgot, Tahm, Ornn, Bard as fat champions but they are all male or undefined.

Out of these guys, only Gragas and Tahm are fat with their gut bouncing ahead of them. Urgot is built like these guys:

https://qph.fs.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-2ead96661a0110429e1e12b7643b20f2

Maybe even heavier. And it's all meat and muscle. Same for Ornn: he is tough and extremely stocky, almost square in shape. Bard is not fat as well - he is more like a baloon made of clothes and wig. Or a walking bagpipe.

Gragas' fatness goes well with his personality: he is carefree and hedonistic, preferring some good booze (particularly ale which is basically liquid bread and gives you a hell of a beer gut) and tavern brawl over everything else. Tahm's body shape also is a sign of his voraciousness.

So, it is possible to add a bulky and stocky female character because there is a lot of jobs and occupations her design would fall nicely into. However, adding a Gragas-shaped female character who openly states that she loves eating would result in a lot of hate and accusations from a particular part of the playing audience.

Hell no. I would not even want to ban her cuz it would mean having to find that disgusting abomination among all other champions and actually click on it. Holy shit. 10/10 Would uninstall.

And we also already have assassin yordle. Teemo

Actually I ban him for sound design. But in regards to visual design. Urgot is kinda meant to be that way, due to his augmentations. Tahm kench is literally gluttony and greed (and he may be thin af for his species). Bard is some space hippy (so his form is irrelivant) and ornn has a dwarf stature so no matter what he'd look fat).

In my opinion, gragas is the only one actually fat and even then it's all in the beer belly, which fits the character. Fat simply isn't an attractive trait, look at all of league's female champions bar Illaoi Jinx. All of them have exaggerated sexual characteristics to appeal to hormonal teens. Then look at a majority of males with exposed abdomens, chests and arms. Same deal because it makes them look cool, so people can see w/e hero they envision in some league hero No joke the first thing that came out of my friends mouth years ago when he played ahri for the first time was "holy shit these tits, they're bigger than me".

There's simply no benefit riot could gain by making a fat female champion with all of her fat exposed. Visually it would be displeasing unless you're one of the minority who find obesity attractive. And before anyone gets to the kit, they see the splash art and the champion. If someone is immediately turned off before they even get to the kit, how will the champ sell? What about skins? Look at gragas' splash, it's this drunken beserker having a jolly old time in a bar brawl. Now compare him to the splash you posted. I'd pick the drunken beserker over this random fatty any day

I just want diversity for a sake of diversity. Body weight not always has to have a theme connection. Riot has said recently that that they will try not to sexualise champions just because. They also said once that they want players to feel some kind of connection to champions and I'm sure there are overweight players and cosplayers over there that would welcome a chubby female. I remember how 2 years ago I proposed an AD support and it considered a very bad idea by community and yet we have Pyke now. Riot likes new designs and diversity

BoringLittleF7 votes

I just want diversity for a sake of diversity.

Diversity for a sake of diversity is not a way to go. It just sucks life out of creativity and makes people fearful of introducing their ideas because they don't hit some diversity boxes which have to be there just because. So yes, the design and bio of a character have to click together because if you establish a certain trend in a fictional country as in "Freljord consists of pale-skinned Northmen/Shuriman regions are populated by dark-skinned people" and than slap an Asian-looking Freljordian/Shuriman because diversity. Smart design is the best design.

I'm sure there are overweight players and cosplayers over there that would welcome a chubby female.

I play characters like Aatrox Taric Poppy Illaoi Urgot Gnar Fiddlesticks

They have shit to do with my appearance, the only thing that matters: are their abilities interesting? How cool is their design?

If people really had interest in playing characters who look like them, half of the champions would like awkward office nerds.

"Diversity for a sake of diversity is not a way to go. It just sucks life out of creativity and makes people fearful of introducing their ideas because they don't hit some diversity boxes which have to be there just because."

You do not understand how character design works, because this is the opposite of the truth. With no diversity in designs, creativity takes a dive. This is why so many champions in the game, especially female champions, have same face syndrome. For a long time, Riot didn't care too much about differentiating characters, and just focused on sex appeal, causing body types to be the same across the board, which in turn stifled creativity in the facial designs.

Look no further than the pre-reworked female Yordles. While all of the male Yordles had different and interesting designs, the female Yordles were all just small blue women. They did not have any kind of animalistic traits like the male Yordles did. Just tiny women, with blue skin and white hair. But since they moved slightly away from making every woman in the game as sexy as they could, they now have the iconic Yordle ears, the fur, and the weird cat-ish nose. These designs are far more creative than what they previously were.

Having more diversity in champion designs opens up more avenues for the artists to explore. It does not "suck out the creativity."

Leetri4 votes

Adding something just for the sake of diversity means that you only create the character because you need to tick a checkbox. "Oh we need a black Freljordian, throw something together real quick so we can say we're diverse and inclusive", that's what being "diverse for the sake of diversity" is.

Also the reasons females Yordles look different than males is because they used to be a completely different race called Meglings. The swap from Megling to Yordle has nothing to do with moving away from sexy designs, they just thought it was too much to have both Yordles and Meglings. The swap happened when Poppy was originally released, so far before Riot started using different body layouts.

Here's the thing about a fat champ. Gragas isn't just fat. He's comically fat. He's the drunken brawler fat. He's an archtype, along with the very Southern smooth talker Tahm. Having fat just as a characteristic doesn't fit well in design, when combined with something else, usually their Fighting archtype. I'm all for bigger woman, like a motherly-type character, who definitely would be bigger, but that's further more towards the body-type of Illaoi, not Gragas.

Like serious obesity isn't healthy, Gragas is a literal joke, we don't need fat characters.

ThePikol9 votes

But not every body type has to have some thematic connection. Can't we just have a fat woman? Just because she doesn't care/ have slow metabolism/ is a mage therefor doesn't move as much? Just like there is no thematic in Syndra being this fit. She is just because. No reason other than making females sexy. She floats and uses magic, she doesn't work out or use any fighting style. Sometimes there is no reason needed for a champion to be fat

Evil Bisex Plant3 votes

It needs to have a thematic background because otherwise Riot adds a champion noone plays - by which I mean, Riot reworks champions who are considered ugly because it's just a statistic (said Riot, not me, btw) that less people play unattractive champions. That's the reason for Syndra and many others being fit. "But fat does not equal unattractive" spare me that bullshit, the general conception of beauty is general for a reason. If Riot wanted to make a champion for everyone rather than generally liked champions, they wouldn't rework Swain, Urgot and many other [generally considered] unattractive champions into their current form.

MalrothDragonia2 votes

when Riot says a champion is 'unattractive' they're not talking about standards of beauty, they're talking about model/rig age, clunky movements, few or low quality animations, and unclear kits. Fuck off with your 'standards of beauty' BS

Evil Bisex Plant1 votes

No, they are talking about standarts of beauty, if they didn't, Swain's face would look like before and Urgot would be fat blob instead of heavy muscley.

MalrothDragonia1 votes

Urgot is still a heavy-set character, how you classify him as 'fat' or not is irrelevant, as for Riot's 'intention' when they say unattractive I need a source please.

Evil Bisex Plant1 votes

There is a heavy difference between the old Urgot (basically what @BoringLittleF under me said) and the new musculary-fatty and way more handsome in his face Urgot, that's the first thing. The other thing is the source which I'm unable to find - my guess is because I'm also unable to find Urgot rework FAQ on Boards where I'm pretty sure it was mentioned too, but whether yes or no, it has been mentioned many times so it's considered a common knowledge. Would be best if we could just get a Rioter here to confirm, but I'm not that optimistic.

Paletongue4 votes

That implies that a character is automatically unattractive if they are fat. As you know, that isn't true.

Depends on what someone considers fat really.

Morbidly obese, yeah lol, unless you got a fetish for it, it's very disgusting.

But a little belly is really cute.

BoringLittleF4 votes

Just like there is no thematic in Syndra being this fit. She is just because. No reason other than making females sexy. She floats and uses magic, she doesn't work out or use any fighting style. Sometimes there is no reason needed for a champion to be fat

Syndra was trained in a temple by an Ionian teacher, who was tasked with teaching her control and discipline and monks usually don't overeat. Even if she killed him for his lies, some lessons and way of life are hard to erase. Also, it's said that she practices all the time to be stronger: and Ionians do have this moment in their teaching that the body and mind must be trained equally. Her clothing is the basically her way to say "I'm invincible. Fuck you" which goes well with her arrogance.

Sexy Jack Rabbit1 votes

She also wears a tonne of belts, which often symbolize 'Restraint' both literally and figuratively. Riot did a good job there for once. CoughCaitlynCough

That said her design is kind of bad. But not because she's fit or 'sexual' Her design is just kind of wonky and random.

Like what even is that chest-thing she's wearing? It's sure as hell not a corset.
Why does her skirt-wrap around her body but then have 2 massive tassles off the back? Where does her skirt even hang off of? Why Gloves and Pauldrons of all things? Why is she even wearing that weird skirt-wrap? Why is her mantle of decorum on her head if she's not an elder? Where'd she even get it from and why did she put it on? Compared to newer champions her design is just so confusing and wonky.

With champions like Taliyah we know why she wears what she does, how it fits on and etc.

BoringLittleF1 votes

It has a strong resemblance with the outfit of Sindel in MK 9.

http://fi%%%c.ru/modules/photo/images/109-sindel2.jpg

Given that Syndra was made at the time when Summoners lore was a thing, an there are characters whose design is a nod to certain franchises: Vayne Lux Rengar I won't be surprised if they decided to give a white-haired dark sorceress from a land of martial arts and temples a MK vibe. Sharp pauldrons give + 100 to the evil overlord look, Aku confirms.

Why is her mantle of decorum on her head if she's not an elder?

Because she is kinda a self-appointed authority who has no respect for the Ionian hierarchy.

Where'd she even get it from and why did she put it on?

It's quite possible, that this mantle belonged to her teacher, so after killing him she is wearing it like a trophy and a way give people who would want to challenge her a warning.

Where'd she even get it from and why did she put it on? Compared to newer champions her design is just so confusing and wonky.

I can say why would she put it on: it may be a huge middle finger to her enemies as in "You will be dead before you make a step" + if she lived in a temple and was taught discipline and control, I doubt that she was allowed to wear something like this or even have any kind of beauty trinkets, so after killing her teacher, she had no reason to follow the temple's dress-code.

As for where she found it: yes, it was never stated and explained. However, when Syndra was created, the lore of Ionia was not as defined as it is now, and at the moment of her intorduction Riot were more like: ok, here is this cool dark mage who hurls minions at the enemies, i.e., talked about her gameplay more.

Though I wouldn't be surprise if she appeared before some poor clothes-making fellow, intimidated them into crafting this outfit for her and then took it and left without paying for their work XDDD

ModAcademy Kayn2 votes

Maybe she's fit, cause she eats well, and doesn't gouge herself on food, or maybe she excersizes, or maybe magic exhausts someone physically (a very used idea in most magic). The idea that it's so hard for someone to be fit is ridiculous. Fit people are not the outlier. Obese people are.

There's so much more required for someone to be fat, than it is required for someone to be fit, or just not overweight. I'm fine with a heavier woman, but not fat/obese. Bring me a Muriel type of body, that's fine. If we do get a fat character, than it's not going to be a simple wave of a hand. It's going to have to be included in their character, because being fat is a flaw. They ate too much because of something, they're lazy as hell, something.

Fat is not normal, so there tends to be a reason why, and that in itself, is something correlating to character.

Sexy Jack Rabbit13 votes

I think it's rather contextual.

You REALLY obviously no nothing about design theory or character design going off just your first three sentences. Fat characters fit FANTASTICALLY into design.

In the same way a sexual woman can be intimidating or cocky. Fat characters can be seen as malicious or full of mal-intent, or alternatively they can be seen as Motherly, Loving and Soft.

Think of Ursula from Little Mermaid. https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/antagonist/images/1/16/1561_Ursula_40_detail.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/250?cb=20160706015650

Her weight contributes to her design. It shows she's greedy, selfish and full of herself.

You're INCREDIBLY wrong by stating that Motherly types are more 'towards' muscular women. As not only design wise, but historically, Plump and Larger figures have often been associated with Nature, Fertility and of course, Motherhood.

You're trying to tell me you're going to associate THIS; https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/0/0b/Illaoi_OriginalSkin.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/320?cb=20170616230710

Moreso then This? ; https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/courage/images/a/ad/Muriel_Bagge.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20110610081643

Just because one of them is fat?

You're also misguided when it comes to Gragas. Gragas's character and humor is ENTIRELY based around his Alcoholism and not his weight. In ALL of his dialogue he doesn't even have ONE line where he mentions his own weight. If Gragas was 'comically' fat, there would be a joke ANYWHERE in his design, story, lore or literally anything about it. But there isn't.

Creating Fat characters isn't 'glorifying' Obesity or whatever, just like putting big breasts on a battleworn survivalist isn't necessarily sexualization. You people make shit way too much about politics and your own personalized agenda's. When in the end It's just a matter of creating interesting characters, designs and stories that resonate well.

I am glad YOU know everything about character design. Other opinions are definitely wrong!

Yes, people will support fat character on boards, but here is the reality: Nobody wants to play this kind of character.

Did you ever play a MMORPG? All onlinegames (Black Desert Online for example) offer an insane amount of customisation. You're able to create chubby und sometimes fat girls. I met thousends of players and there was not even one, who created a chubby avatar.

Yes, there are great characters like Ursula, who has an amazing design. However, you cherry picked a nostalgic Disney villain, who got a whole movie to develop her character. Let's keep it more realistic: ThePikol posted a high quality artwork of a storm themed champion. Janna has a very similar design and theme. Feel free to disagree, but I prefer Janna.

Sexy Jack Rabbit1 votes

I'm glad you realize my opinion is the only one that matters.

Sonic Adventures 2 IS the better then the first. Bayonetta warped smash bros competitive and as a result should be massively changed in ultimate. Mario and Peach are only friends, and Bowser Jr is the most busted character in Super Mario Tennis no questions asked and needs to be nerfed if Nintendo wants to keep the competitive integrity of the game.

It's weird you say that when people already DO play these characters in games all the time?

As for Black Desert Online, well you can't really make your characters 'fat' maybe comically thick at best. If you consider having a line in your waist 'fat' then I think you really need to specify what you consider 'fat' from a character design standpoint. It's like when Reworked Evelynn's splashart came out and everyone said she looked overweight.

As for the proposed character design it could use a lot of work frankly. It does a better job then Janna at portraying at Storm champion (Because let's face it she's more 'Wind' then 'Storm') But that's most because Janna's design is often ridiculed for being terrible anyways. She's just a chick in a white bikini. Why not have her be like a Wind Woman with Clouds for clothing. Janna wouldn't need clothes anyways when she could just manipulate warmer air currents around herself. Would make way more sense.

Like serious obesity isn't healthy, Gragas is a literal joke, we don't need fat characters.

That's just complete bs, by that logic alcoholics, smokers, persons with piercings should never by portrayed in media but I am pretty sure you don't have any problems with any of those 4. In your case is pretty much I don't want feeeeemale characters who don't please my pee pee in my vydia games

I’d like a thief or bandit like champion. The downside is how you reflect thievery in a game.

I did however think of an ability.

Distraction: throw a “coin” in a skill shot. This skill shot can pass enemy champions. Champions hit by this skill shot are taunted or charmed (probably charmed) in the direction of where the coin landed.

So basically it’s like a fear but instead of them running backwards they are running to a specific spot.

Young Ryze is a young scholar. Sivir is a money-hungry mercenary who loves gold and wears several gold trinkets close to the body so there would always be something for the black day + a descendant of the emperor playboy of Shurima. A sleeveless jacket which seems like it's there, but not really + scarf + several golden braceletes is something I can easily imagine.

A lot more plantlike is basically Mao'Kai, so I think the humanity of the bodyshape won't go anywhere:
