Top lane is the worst lane to carry from

I'm talking about from a global perspective that top lane has the lowest influence on the game. As far as each role in concerned, jungle and mid have the most say over how well your other teammates do, the position of mid on the map makes it an arms reach to walk to any other lane/objective on the map. You are the closest lane to bot, AND top, you are closer to the dragon-side jungle than top and the same distance to top as baron (you are actually in the center of everything) meaning if you need to join up with jungler or bot lane, you can reach them faster than top.

It's the same with Jungle, you literally get gold for being on every side of the map killing camps; Being a "global" influence on any lane you decide to gank on your route, meaning, that like mid you have a "say" in what happens in every single lane, which affects how well your team does. Even Support and ADC have more influence than top does. Because say as a support, if you play well get your adc a double kill bot, now that means YOU are in a better spot, your ADC is in a better spot, their support is in a worse spot, and their adc is in a worse spot. making a 4/10's shift on the game as far as how many players are affected.

Now look, I know what you are going to saysummoner 12 right? Well you see, if the jungler or mid lane comes and messes with you top, there's a good chance you are going to have to burn it to get back to lane, even if you didn't die, because you will get behind. But aside from that teleporting is honestly somewhat of a large risk if you don't get anything out of it, unlike say summoner 14 ing someone and not getting a kill, you have to possibly risk losing your tower, or having it heavily chunked AND miss CS top if your teleport doesn't work out, it's also heavily in the hands of your team as to WHERE they ward if you can even make a tp play or not. (watch your botlane never ever preemptively place a ward that will let you teleport behind their bot lane.) But more-over teleport got nerfed this season, meaning that you just have a worse chance of doing something useful to your team with it.

I feel like the only way to make top more meaningful/connected to team-success is to either buff teleport or turn rift herald into something more meaningful, like a global buff like infernal drake, because at least that way, you are indirectly helping your team be in a better spot, rather than getting a "greedy" buff that only helps you out. It's just too often than bot lane loses or jungle got behind and the enemy jungle proceeds to roll over your other lanes and you had very little say in the events leading up to that point.

I feel like it's very possible to carry from top.

Top can roam to mid just as easily as mid can roam to top/bot.

Top does have TP. I think it's better to use it differently though (although it's not always easy): Push the wave, recall, run straight to the lane you want to help, gank it (helps if you have your jungler show on the opposite side of the map so they don't expect anything), then TP back to your lane as your lane opponent crashes the wave to your tower. You miss nothing and had map pressure, and even if you don't get the kill your TP puts you where you want to be rather than where you don't want to be.

Top laners have it a lot better than bot lane I'd say. I used to main ADC and I've switched to Top because ADCs really have no control over the game early/mid. If the enemy jg/mid decides to roam to your lane a lot you're useless. If the enemy top TPs behind you when you try to make a play, your potential lead just turned in to being quite far behind. Even if you get left alone and get way ahead, if the enemy mid/top/jungle also gets ahead they can still easily dive you and 100-0 you. By being part of a duo-lane you're guaranteed to be ~2 levels behind the enemy solo laners and ~1 level behind their jungler. If any of them are fed equally to you this is even amplified (since you're sharing kill xp with your support too). Then there's the fact that most mid/tops are designed to beat adcs 1v1 or even 1v2. In order to carry as ADC you need a team that's not drastically behind and has peel or engage to help you out. In order to carry as a top/mid you literally just need to get fed yourself and target whoever is ahead on the enemy team, all game every game.

And I mean, I'm speaking from experience. I'm gold 5 and have played on average 80% of my last 100 (normal) games against plat 5 to diamond 3 opponents. Whenever one gets an early lead on me, they typically start carrying pretty hard unless a) my team as a whole is doing extremely well and I just play passive and build tank until I'm useful b) they get full of themselves and constantly splitpush instead of trying to win 5v5

and this isn't because it's a diamond playing against a bunch of golds (my allies are often all plat).

Yeah, going to a lane, then tping back top is a good way to play it, the only down side is that you can only do that once every 5 minutes, where as say a jungler can do that whenever they feel like it. Obviously top can carry, I just feel like you have less opportunites than other roles due to the cooldown on teleport

I think it's more the champion than the role.

Mid laners are designed to output loads of damage (often AOE) and thus carry teamfights pretty easily. ADCs are designed to become hypercarries late game, and thus if they start getting a big early lead and no one can match them, they can carry pretty solidly. Junglers by default get to have presence everywhere. They're more credited with map pressure carrying than getting fed themselves.

Top laners... most of them are designed to be tanks or at least tanky. Some can still carry really hard. Ekko somehow still does more damage than your typical mid-laner while building almost full tank... Fiora does loads of damage, Rumble has a huge teamfight, etc... Most however, are there for their tankiness and utility. They're going to help teamfights even if behind, and they pay for that safety by not being as strong a force when ahead unless you build them glass cannon (which runs the risk of losing if the enemy team manages to stall at all). Then on top of all of that, if you do get ahead and are a champion that can carry hard, you're not a tank in the typically tanky role. So unless your jungler and support are tanks, your team lacks utility/engage to force those winning fights or peel for you.

I wonder if they put the weaker towers top, if that would influence a 2v2 top lane and the solo lane closer to dragon. Then at least you have a choice to make as to what object you want to try to secure first. :)

Every lane's job is to crush bot. The ADC is the most valuable objective on the map. That is the biggest problem with the game now. Every lane is completely tied to bottom lane's success.

Marshbouy1 votes

Weren't people sick and tired of constant tps bot lane or around the map? Also people who played top enjoyed the island that it provided. I could have sworn that's how it was...

God Raijin1 votes

The main reason tp's were getting annoying and whysummoner 12 got nerfed is because mid laners were almost always taking it. I mean, it might be enjoyable to have your 1 v 1 top, but honestly** if you could** have more team-influence it would be better, even if you don't like it. but again I was thinking if they don't want to change teleport, rift herald should give more of a team-oriented buff so that way you can indirectly help around the map more

Marshbouy1 votes

They are talking about making rift herald better. I saw meddler mentioned it on a post but i can't find it since it was a while ago.

Top lane's purpose isn't to carry. We have an APC and an ADC for that. Top lane is meant to farm up and quickly acquire tank items (cheaper than damage so in theory should stack quickly) and initiate mid game when you get a bit too tanky for conventional burst.

They also constantly pressure top so that the rest of the map can group and pressure somewhere. Whether split pushing or just fueling a wave, they create another point of pressure. If you want to carry, top isn't really for you unless you want something like Fiora or Trynd. It can carry, don't get me wrong. But its champion pool isn't designed to snowball like ADCs and APCs

God Raijin2 votes

Yeah, I'm not saying top should be some Hard carry/ kill everyone type role, I mean "carry" as in how a support carries, which is basically being a benefit to your team by putting your teammates in a better spot, which, top is the worst role at doing --It's more of a thing in solo-que as to "Why should I pick top, if I have the lowest chance of carrying the game?" Top lane honestly feels like a pretty self-centered role, hell think about how rift herald works, its a buff that demands help from your team so that only you can get a buff from it.

The thing with Top Lane is that many Top Laners have things within their kits (primarily ultimates) that make them able to help their team across the map without Teleport.

Examples: Gangplank Ult Shen Ult Quinn Bird Roam Form (Ult) Kled Ult Pantheon Ult Sion Ult (sort of) Yorick Ult (split pushes for him, although he loses a lot of damage)

I was listing the champions I did because the person I replied to had stated that top was exclusively for Tanks/ tanky champions and not a place for carries. It's not. Thankfully.

It's fine if top has the least influence, that just means when things happen people focus less on what top's doing which also influences blind spots making top that much more silent but deadly.

But it doesn't mean that they aren't impactful, the amount of pressure you can bring from your teammates if insane with how enemies usually put you on less of a priority to keep down.

There's a lot of hidden power top lane has, it's just up to the player to make use of it.

God Raijin1 votes

well sure that could sometimes be the case, but personally I would rather bot lane crush that personally crush top lane, I mean if the jungler goes and get's kills bot that means you have a fed jungler and ADC, and its easier for the support to roam, it also fucks 2 enemies bot lane.

in other words it literally affects 5/10s the players in the game. Where as stomping top only affects 2 players. It's not clear thinking to believe that how well YOU do top is more important that how 5/10's the people playing the game do. I mean you can sit top solo kill you lane a few times, but If the rest of the map lost you almost certainly will lose the game.

Honestly top lane is really just gambling if you are trying to climb solo que quickly, you as a single player on an "island" statistically just don't have the same impact that multiple players have on the main land. Try winning top really hard and then try winning that game where bot mid and jungle lost and you had very little control over the early game when that was happening.

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

Well it does if you do splitpushing properly you can solo win games due to how much resources they have to actually put into you. Even with feeding bot/mid splitpushing is something mostly hand in hand with top because most top laners can deal with multiple enemies if planned right and go back to get objectives.

Swiftstrike41 votes

If the top lane was more important we would see more lane swaps. Riot does not want that at the pro scene and the Rift Herald can't be too strong otherwise it would occur a lot.

You can carry from top just depends on the champions you play. I feel least impactful in games where I jungle. But this is largely because if the teams all lose their lanes early you as the jungler can't fix everything.

It also depends on the Elo. In lower Elo any lane can really carry, but probably the mid lane is the most important. Once you get higher Top begins to have less impact than mid or bottom because the players are more competent.

Edit: Top laners like Nasus Jax Irelia Gangplank Jayce all can have a lot of impact a long with other carries. I actually like that the lane is less interactive than others. I hate playing mid because there is so much activity there and the lane never feels "safe".

Akali is SO HOT1 votes

If you play carry top laners you can totally carry the game. If you play boring tanks then you are correct.

Bladerunner77771 votes

But if you play your boring tank correctly, you can almost win games by default if they stall long enough because having a tank with CC almost always wins against teams that have no tanks (late game)

oSEXYPLATYPUSo1 votes

best role to carry from and have the biggest impact on the game is MID

you can roam to either lane and help, you are fed blue buff via jungler and you scale faster then other lanes

and most of the time if you are a mage you are the only ap damage on a team so majority of the enemy def budget would be vs the ad and get hp and armor and not as much MR so you wouldnt be as effected from defensive builds...

Crush your lane as hard as you can and either force the jungler to camp (and kill him tooDarius) and/or start taking towers. Splitpushing has to be timed with the rest of your team getting other objectives, of course - you do have to communicate via pings and probably chat more so than other ways of carrying. Or, you could just play someone like Rumble or MonkeyKing with awesome teamfight potential, or even Gangplank who can kinda do both.

Also, do not underestimate the power of engage in yoloQ! Many of the best engagers have a home in toplane Renekton Nautilus Malphite.

And just remember - not all teams are carryable. Just try not to think that way and tilt yourself XD

FireDrizzle1 votes

I can only speak for silver and bronze but I dont agree at all, I think jungle is worst(low elo atleast) becasue if your team is much worse than the enemy you cant carry by ganking. I remember went 1/1/11 on Zac jungle but we were slaughtered. Also if your team follows up a succesful gank with feeding the turret or prevents success by misplaying you just waste time. If your in lane you can get more farm and theres always the chance your lane opponent feeds you and you become a teamfight and/or splitpushing monster so you have a shot at carrying those games.

DunkinNoobs1 votes

While true, top lane is also the easiest lane to snowball out of control in, which artificially increases their carry potential.
