You know, I look at the current mastery system and thought Riot didn't want micro-optimizations

A while back, before Runes Reforged, I remember one of the devs saying that they didn't want Masteries to be a form of micro-optimizing. But now you look at how the current runes work and there's still plenty of it. For instance, on PBE, the change they're making to Minion Dematerializer (which is being changed to Dream Snatcher) basically just gives very minuscule bonuses in the long run. 3-6 armor or MR? 18-36 HP? 2.4-3.6 AD or 4-8 AP?

[zombie-brand-facepalm]

It's not just with that, though. There are plenty of runes that give you very small stat bonuses that are almost invisible during gameplay. Did Riot do a takeback on what they said about micro-stats?

IMO, yes and no.

I think their ultimate goal is to try and make each rune choice as compelling as possible without making them outshone others in almost all situations. The main problem with that is sometimes making that happen requires micro-optimization.

Well, it certainly doesn't make Minion Dematerializer/Dream Snatcher feel meaningful. Heck, they just nerfed it for armor.

I may be wrong, but the new runes allow you for much less fine tuned control over your stat min-maxing. A lot less ability to choose between this stat early or that stat late. Sure there are a lot of choices to go for, but the ability to purely control one's stat line is decreased.
