Giving TF the Varus Treatment [Stacked Deck Active Suggestion]

ModThe Djinn··15 votes·1,533 views

Hey there!

I assume by now we've all seen the new Varus experiment on the PBE, but I'll include it below for reference:

#Blighted Quiver Cooldown: 40 seconds at all ranks. Passive: Old effect now a passive effect. Active [New]: Varus' next Piercing Arrow deals bonus magic damage equal to 6/7/8/9/10% to 9/10.5/12/13.5/15% of the target's missing health (scales with Piercing Arrow charge)

Blighted Quiver is capped at 360 damage against monsters.

It's a pretty awesome addition to an ability that used to be a static buff. But we have a few other static buffs in the game, and it's possible this style could be used to add some flavor to them.

Twisted Fate is a champion in kind of an odd place. He's a harassing ganking mage who plays a bit like an odd assassin, and he has an E that is super unexciting. It's a definitely spot where we could add some interest. So here's the suggestion -- bear in mind that it's a very rough suggestion, so balancing would definitely have to occur to ensure TF doesn't get too much of a boost.

#Stacked Deck

Passive: Twisted Fate gains 10/15/20/25/30% attack speed, and every 4th attack deals bonus magic damage. [New] Active: Twisted Fate immediately pulls the next Pick a Card in sequence. This ability is only usable while Pick a Card is on cooldown and Twisted Fate does not have a card selected. 30/27/24/21/18 second cooldown.

The sequence is Blue - Red - Yellow - Blue - Red - Yellow, which means you entire avoid double-stuns, although you might need to weaken the red card slightly to avoid the powerful Red into Yellow combo.

Thoughts? Understanding that TF's kit might require some minor adjustments to general tuning to ensure his burst doesn't become oppressive, does this seem like a potentially good way to make TF's assassins gameplay a bit more interesting and make his E a bit more appealing?

Honestly no thanks. It would be so easy to just double gold card.

W gold card, wait 2 ticks, press E

And then it would be blue. I think you misunderstand how it would work.

Did you read?

I did, the post was a little misleading.

The post was pretty straight forward and even specifically mentioned this.

Not necessarily, it said you would avoid double stuns so I assumed it meant like gold card + immediate gold card.

I probably didn't explain it super well then -- you can't double up. It just progresses the cycle by 1. So if you used a Gold Card as the stun and hit E, it would immediate activate a Blue Card.

I see, I thought you meant it just pulls up the current card in the sequence since TF card metronome is always going.

Sounds cool

Or how about adding an active component where the card thats locked in get a bonus effect Yellow, more stun? Blue, maybe add missing health damage? Red. bigger aoe slow?

What about the following instead?

  • W - Pick a Card:
  • Passive: each of Twisted Fate's basic attacks cycles through his deck, changing the color of his next card in a predictable pattern. Twisted Fate cycles through Blue, Red and Gold cards, in that order, and always starts on a Blue card.
  • Active: Twisted Fate activates the card in his hand, causing his next basic attack within 6 seconds to gain a bonus effect (same as current effects, with perhaps numbers adjustments).
  • E - Stacked Deck:
  • Active: Twisted Fate's next basic attack deals bonus damage. This also instantly resets his basic attack animation.

The idea here being that the core notion of holding onto a particular card gets shifted onto Pick a Card, and instead Stacked Deck would be another way of doing TF's current E, where he'd get to quickly cycle through the card color he'd want, in a kit where his card color would depend on his autoattacks. Stacked Deck itself would still not be a terrifically interesting ability on its own, but in conjunction with his W it'd play much more into the idea of TF using attacks, rather than an animation, in order to manage his cards.

The issue I take with the change proposed in the OP is that, whereas Varus's new W buffs an ability that can miss (and only adds damage that itself is designed primarily to finish off targets near death), Pick a Card is conveyed via autoattack, so in essence it would just add some extra burst damage on top of an additional amount of CC/utility, without really heightening the thrill of doing something special as TF, or having the potential to outplay an especially strong attack as his opponent (which is what is likely to happen when Varus and his victim both see him prep an execution arrow). The OP itself also mentioned the power inherent in the red-gold combo, since in addition to more damage it represents 4.5 seconds' worth of total potential CC, if TF chooses to spread his damage so.

Ok sure but why1 votes

So, just a straight-up buff. Cool. Neat. Varus could use a whole mini-rework instead of just "Hehe, give him one extra ability," which is just plain silly. As for TF, all this does is give him an even higher %AP ratio on his full burst. And since EVERY TF player in existence is used to landing gold cards with ease, this'll just mean every TF player will use the blue card next for the absolute most damage whilst adding no utility aside from some return on mana.

If you're gonna do that, you might as well take the cheap route of buffing his current AP ratios and lowering his mana costs.

Right there in the OP.

But the rest of the critique is definitely valid, and something to consider. Good points.

Just no.

That would call for some FAT BURSTING. Great TF players (against an opponent who hasn't built tenacity) could easily pull off sequential Lich Bane procs. His burst is pretty significant already.

Max Rank Gold card is 2 sec, Lich Bane passive cooldown is also 2 secs.

I like the idea, it'd make TF less linear and I do agree there would have to be some tuning involved.

I like the idea itself, to give TF an active ability on his E, I just don't like how it just gives him another choice at his pick a card. IMO it's unimaginative.

Maybe make it a mid-long range skill shot that impacts on a target or surface? Like a jhin ability but is blocked by minions? IDK something fresh

The main thing I always wanted on TF is simply more base damage!

Then he could be taken botlane...

Why would you Nerf tf in this way? Fun fact stacked deck is a on hit effect so it procs off rageblade

Stacked Deck didn't change in any way save that it gained power, so I'm unsure what you mean by this.

Im for adding some sh*t on tf... but i m not for ur idea

I wouldn't buff TF in general but his idea looks fine to me.

Yeah sure let's add an active to every passive ability. Can't even imagine what people are going to come up with for vayne's w. shivers
