Hey Riot, Mana itemization could be more interesting.

Mana (and mana regen) itemization is very boring and archaic. It honestly hasn't changed much since 2009 if you look at the mechanics on the items. I think this leads to Riot's champion designers feeling that mana as a resource is boring, and this is why they keep making manaless champions. An alternate resource such as fury might be more intriguing for the champion designers because they feel more free to add unique gameplay mechanics involving the resource.

However, there are some champion designs that have unique gameplay involving mana and I think that is a very solid point of design. For example, Kassadin can sustain mana by going into melee. Honestly I much prefer his pre-rework mana mechanics but that's beside the point. Other good examples are Karthus and Swain because they get mana for doing a specific action. I believe there's potential for more interesting and engaging mechanics here but it hasn't really been explored as most mana using champions just have mana, mana costs, and the player is expected to rely on itemization to manage it. The problem is the itemization isn't interesting.

Mana can appear to be a bad/problematic resource because of a single bad design choice. For example, I think Ryze and Singed both have poor choices in their design when it comes to mana. They are both champions that convert mana directly into other stats, but they don't actually need more mana than most mana users (Ryze doesn't need it more than mages who go Athene's), nor do they have gameplay that makes mana interesting. They just stack it because their kit arbitrarily says they should.

Anyway... If a champion can have mana tied into their gameplay in a fun and interesting way, why can't items do that for every mana user? If mana itemization were a lot more interesting, every mana using champion would be too.

I seriously think a massive mana item rework would be worthwhile. It would breathe new life into the majority of champions.

For Singed, I don't know. But I really assume you didn't play Ryze extensively, otherwise you wouldn't say that he doesn't need the mana he builds - far from it. On Ryze, you need your big mana pool to be able to sustain your casting for any extended period of time.

That being said, some more interactive mana regen mechanics might be interesting. For example, Doran's Ring's mana on CS mechanic is a really cool idea.

Or, how about giving Athene's an active that plays on the "Blood Grail" theme of the item? For example, pay 10% of your max HP and regenerate 20% of your missing mana in the next 5 seconds. The cost being there to discourage people who are low HP from not backing, as well as for being thematically appropriate. Or another idea: Have your next spell cost double its mana cost in HP - for emergency oom casting.

Ryze doesn't need it more than other mages. They just get Athene's instead.

well, we have atleast 3 items now that have a more interacitve manarestore: item 1056: mana on lasthit item 3174 : mana on kill/assist item 3508: mana-vamp on AAs

However, i totally agree that we need more interactive manasutain rather than passive regen

on a side note, ever tried ryze without much mana? his spell spamming drains your mana like crazy...

The problem is those interactive mechanics are overshadowed by raw regen.

And my point about Ryze is that while other mages go Athene's, instead he goes for max mana not because of any difference in mana costs but only because he gets damage from max mana.

Here are some ideas.

Mana Station - An active that drops an area of effect mana restore over time. Allies can stand in it to gain mana, but if forced out of the position you lose a lot of potential mana.

Mana-Vamp vs champions - Dealing damage to a champion restores a large amount of mana. Allows you to sustain only by hitting your opponents. They have counterplay against it by not getting hit.

Absorb Shield - An active shield you place on an ally that restores mana to the caster based on total damage blocked. By reacting to enemies properly you get mana.

Absorb Aura - A short range aura that gives you greatly increased mana regen while you're close to enemy champions. This would be something for aggressive melee characters to reward them for getting close and personal.

(general) Passive mana regen affects the interactive mechanics - This puts passive regen into a secondary role where it is used to scale up the interactive mechanics instead of being the primary method of sustaining. This would work because you're giving every champion itemization to scale with it.

When I play singed, I never buy mana. Sure, it gives you more gold efficiency, but he just doesn't need much mana how I play him. It's more efficient to buy health and resistances straight. Flask is plenty of mana for me.

Yeah he really doesn't need mana. The only reason somebody would buy mana is that his passive says you should. That is bad design which was the point I was making.

And btw I think Frozen Heart is really good on him.
