Chalice lost 5 MR, which is pretty ouch if you think about it. Buying a Negatron Cloak early screws your early damage capability (you could've gotten that Blasting Wand instead), and frequently DOESN'T WORK if you have no health.
When are you gonna admit that buying resistances early is a trap, Riot? A big fat... never?

If anything, Ahri is pretty notable for being viable without relying on Athene's.
Champions like Orianna and Ziggs are way bigger problems about the item, and the fact that they're already pretty safe means that chipping away at the magic resistance on it doesn't really hurt people it isn't supposed to.
Mage Morgana fits in with them, although recently a lot of her appearances put her in the support role. Ahri can get an Abyssal Scepter for magic resistance and works pretty well with it considering she jumps in to range for the MR reduction when she's assassinating people.
