How is Riven balanced? (Genuine question)

#Greetings fellow humanoids! Tristana

Now before anyone gets fucking triggered and downvotes this post to smithereens just hear me out. This isn't a hate post against any Riven mains out there at all. I just need some tips and tricks about playing against Riven. Nothing else. You have your favourite champion, I have mine. You do you.

Anyway. I was just wondering. What exactly is it that balances Riven? Everytime I'm up against her it doesn't really feel like I can do anything to counter her. At all. She has so much mobility with her semi-low cooldown dashes, she has a fair amount of crowd control, she has really high scalings, she gains bonus attack damage for every spell cast and her dashes resets her auto attacks, she has a shield that actually scales with her AD (Offense = Defense?), she can make her basic attacks and dashes even longer whilst also gaining bonus attack damage and a ranged AOE execute.

And the worst part is. All of this is free. She doesn't need to use mana. She doesn't need to use energy. She doesn't need to build up fury like Renekton or Shyvana, oh no, she can do all of the above for absolute free.

So this is where my problem comes in. How do I counter this? My first thought was "Duh just build armor", but since literally every single Riven out there builds Black Cleaver and atleast one or two lethality items, if not even more, and her ult being a ranged AOE percentage maximum health execute, made armor seem like a dead stat.

Second thought was to kite. In theory, this seems like Riven's biggest counterplay. However, seeing as she has all of these dashes and probably build a Youmuu's and/ or a Mercurial Scimitar, I find it hard to actually kite her in practice.

Third thought was to engage her after she as used her abilities. This is more of an early game thing than a late game thing she's probably build 40% cdr at this point. However, her cooldowns aren't (in my opinion) that high early game at all and since she doesn't use any resource, I can't exhaust her of mana or energy.

So I'm pretty much at a loss here. I have no idea how to counter Riven. If any of you guys know how to, feel free to post it down below.

She's too weak, every ability needs to be truedamage!

While idk what she's balanced around, Riven is super ez to beat.

Just play Morde and run ignite

I will definitely try it out.

Riven isn't balanced, some how when she's 0/10 the whole game, some how late game comes she scales so hard that you just can't win a 1v1 against Riv, even with 10+ kills. Super Riv die-hard fans build high cdr to spam her shields a lot, a 3 second no cost shield that scales very well with her ad.

Qursor4 votes

Um, if a Riven is 0/10, the likelihood of her coming back from whatever CS deficit she has, is about 0% unless all 5 of you stand still and let her hit you. Whatever this man said above me is blown 390248092342089% out of proportion.

Ralanr1 votes

Yeah, Riven is one of those champions that stays down.

SuperCosmicHobo1 votes

Nah Riv just starts wandering off and ks-ing for 5 kills and it just spikes from there. How was it ks? Waits in the bush 'til allies all die and jumps in to clean it all. Finally with just 5 kills, instant squishy shut down out of nowhere late game.

Try ending the game. Anyone comes back 50 minutes in. Riven however only comes back from 0-10 if the enemy royally fucks up.

Riven is probably one of the most balanced champions in the game, she requires mechanical skill to be able to do good in higher elos, she requires a brain, while 95% of the champions in league do not. She is very item dependent while a lot of champions in league are not.

Warlord Rhinark1 votes

Not having to manage a resource bar at all requires mechanical skill?

She has a shield that actually scales with her AD (Offense = Defense?)

Well, the saying is... The Best Defense is a Good Offense.

######Just a joke, OP, just a joke.

In all seriousness, I don't feel that Riven is in need of nerfs, as when I face them (I'm a Toplane Main, just so you know) it really depends on the player themselves. I've had games where the Riven kicked my butt from the Tower back to the Fountain. I've had games where I've given the Riven a severe thrashing. Then there are games where we go about even (Not counting intrusions from my JG or Theirs).

So it really just depends. What Champions do you generally play? Are they potentially ones COUNTERED by Riven? I'd just like to know so that if such is the case, I can help you formulate a strategy.

Trundle. I know Trundle is supposed to be a tank buster and not do that well against other fighters but most, if not all the time, the only Rivens I've played against were picked AFTER I picked Trundle. I don't really know if Trundle is countered by Riven and I'm simply being counterpicked or I just don't know how to play against Riven as Trundle.

The website I usually go to for counterpicking is lolcounter.com and on there Riven isn't listed as being a counter of Trundle. Trundle is actually listed as being a counter against Riven so I don't really know what I'm doing wrong.

EbonyBladeJ881 votes

Well, in regards to the counter-picking, each website is different. For example, I go to championcounter.com, and they list Trundle as being a STRONG pick against Riven . Trouble is, championcounter.com does NOT ELABORATE on HOW the champions listed as strong counters to the one you're looking to counterpick at the time. (I've been looking for a NEW counterpicking website, fyi)

I would think in terms of strategy if facing Riven as a Trundle would involve wise placement of his Pillar/Spire (His E) to disrupt the Riven's combos when she goes in (I know it's easier said than done but just do your best). Using his Damage Reduction from the Q can help provided it's timed right, and make sure there are minions dying nearby to make use of his passive's heal. Also, make sure you're fighting her on YOUR domain (His W) so you can have the boosts it grants. Once you're both at LVL 6 or higher, timing Subjugate and the heal it grants can (Operative word being CAN, it's not guaranteed) prevent her from killing you with her Ult.

That's just my idea. If it doesn't work, sorry.

I never know how people think Riven is overpowered. I've played her something like 30 times ever and the only time I ever carried was once when I trolled picked her support in a normal game and went something like 22-4. Every one of the 29 other games, I went shit like 0-11, 1-7, 2-13 etc. Not for anything could I ever do good on her. She seems underpowered to me.

Riven is not the hardest champion in the game. Most mechanical sure. But she isn't the hardest. Easily top 10. Maybe top 5. But no. Not the hardest.

NotSpecialDude1 votes

Riven is a champ that relies on short trades. Her passive empowers her auto attack when she casts an ability, encouraging her to combo her abilities with AAs. Her ideal trade is to get in with q, auto, knock up, auto, stun, auto and e out before retaliation. She is at her strongest in the early game, especially at level 2.

Long trades are bad for riven as her only means of mobility are also her only means of fighting. Gnar and pantheon are considered counters since they can easily avoid/cancel riven's engage abilities and cut her damage substantially as a result.

The key to defeating Riven is to never fight on her terms. Always hold on to a cc/mobility ability and poke riven whenever possible. If she turns to fight avoid it, but punish her for the attempt. Respect her damage and keep your distance, but once in a fight, commit and force it to end on your terms.

Warlord Rhinark1 votes

The problem is that I'm a Trundle main and Trundle doesn't really have any crowd control and or mobility spells besides his pillar which only knocks back and his slight movement speed buff that only lasts within a fixed area. I also find it hard to poke Riven since Trundle doesn't have any ranged poke and I can't go in for short trades since that's where Riven beats me.

NotSpecialDude1 votes

Ouch. Trundle is one of the few that riven just hard counters. Honestly, the best thing to do is learn either panth or jax as a pocket pick because trundle just doesn't have the kit to deal with riven. That or ban her always.

Automated Riven1 votes

Trundle gets wreckt by riven. Unfortunately for you in that matchup the answer is the build ninja tabi asap and scrounge for farm until your jungler comes. Also if she burns a few Q's you can go into trade with her. Just try to knock her up with your piller during the animation of her 3rd Q. It cancels the damage portion and the knock up. Once you get Titanic and an armor item you should be able to trade and out sustain her if you win a trade. Just try not to die. Riven snowballs really hard so giving up kills is really bad for your team.

She must be not to fall with all those jumps and such a heavy sword.

i like to build ninja tabi a lot of her dmg is with aa so it helps a lot

1st Counterplay: Her dashes are damage tools, just kite her, and all she cant do anything. 2nd Counterplay: PICK A CHAMPION THAT DOESNT GET DESTROYED BY RIVEN. Jhin cant do anything about riven. So don't pick Jhin. Pick someone that can match her mobility.

The Ecdysiast1 votes

Well, Rito's stance on champions who lack counterplay is that it's fine as long as they have counter-picks. Such is the case with champions like Darius, Riven, Fizz, Yasuo.

If you want to stop on Riven 100% of the time, pick Poppy.

You may be thinking, "but declo, she has 4 dashes, and Poppy can only stop one!"

But the thing about that is, she needs those dashes to do her damage. Every single Q is a dash, and since she has to use them in quick succession, you know she will always get knocked by your W if you use it.

And since Sunfire is literally 60% gold efficient vs cleaver's 130% when you buy it against cleaver, I don't waste my gold on it. Build Trinity>Sterak's>Titanic. You'll have all the health you need for your shield to scale, and tons of damage to kill her.

Since her nerfs and the tank item nerfs, Poppy is by no means strong. And she never really was in the first place. It was CoC that was too strong.

Poppy only has 1 form of reliable hard CC and you have to be retarded enough to stand next to a wall for it to work. Her abilities all scale bonus AD, so she doesn't get damage most of the time. And with the support item updates, she doesn't deal enough damage to even break a Locket's shield.

Not sure where you get off calling someone pathetic when you don't even have the brain capacity to look up champion performance before talking....

And you listed two juggernauts. As well as the two champions who scale damage with armor, so they obviously thrive in this ADC meta. You must have taken a break since CoC was introduced, though it's obvious from the fact you're only level 30 you haven't even played since at least the rune update.

Just 'cause you don't have the brainpower to get kills as any champion besides Zed/Fizz/LeBlanc, and other characters specifically designed so that they take minimal effort to get kills and get out, doesn't mean every champion you can't burst down in half a braindead second is overpowered.

She's not balanced, have you seen how hoppy she is.
