Defensive objectives aren't good for the game. They lead to stalling out, which is something Riot has continuously worked to fight against.
They reduced a lot of waveclear in the mage update. They removed laser turrets. They made elder dragons and baron, and now Rift Herald. They want the pacing of the game to be dictated by skill and map control.
If the enemy team takes Herald, you already have a way to counter it. That way is rotation. You may give up some damage to your turret if you leave lane, but even if the enemy team takes your outer, that is better than you losing an inner or even a base turret because you stayed behind. Rift Herald is actually fairly easy to kill, especially if two people are working to kill it. You just have to rotate. It's not hard.
I main Nunu, and jungle. Often I will take Rift Herald, but if it happens to be taken against me, I am constantly roaming and waiting. I avoid fights, I do not die, and when the eye is crushed I head right to that lane and I will Consume, I will slow, I will attack the eye. In two separate instances I have killed the Herald before it even reached my tower.
Rift Herald basically exists to force team fights earlier. It breaks up the laning phase. Right now, we have people who are too stubborn to adapt. They refuse to rotate, thinking it's not their problem. And they are losing games because of it.
Once people wake up and realize they need to actively defend their turrets against Rift Herald, they can move top or bot when the eye is crushed and fight as a team. That is exciting, it allows for more kills and XP on both sides. If you want to defend against Rift Herald, do it in a PVP way. Don't ask for PVE help like turret buffs or neutral objectives. Rift Herald is the whole team's problem.
