@Riot, Concerns about Soraka Changes

Hey Riot,

I wanted to express some real concern about the proposed Soraka changes. I've been playing her pretty frequently even before her rework turned her into a healing monster. I picked her up as a main once she had the rework and I have over 100k mastery points in her and placed in mid Plat last season. As a support main and having her as one of my mains I really understand how she plays. When she was pushed into the "True" healer role of LOL I was elated and felt it was a great change for her that put her in a unique spot in LOL. Over time I really figured out how to play her and it was a rare game that I didn't have a great impact on the outcome of any given match in LOL. I understand that Windspeaker's Blessing really pushed her over the top and gave her a pretty high ban rate but the proposed changes....leave me very worried. I have a few questions for you and I am hopeful someone on riot's team will have time to talk to me about the champion I love the most.

Why was her heal reduced so much?

I am concerned about the heal amount because a drop of 50 per heal is a HUGE amount. She pays 10% of her max health to cast that heal and to have it weakened so much makes me feel that you are trying to remove her healing identity. Now she will often heal less then she pays in health....that will feel awful in game.

Why is her self healing so low?

I understand the idea behind moving her self healing to Q but why does it only trigger once? Why is the AoE smaller? She goes through her health really fast and part of her play style is to punish enemies as they continue to fight. Landing Q's to heal up so that she can keep healing her allies was a big part of her mastery. It was part of mastering her was waiting for that perfect Q to heal her up. It was often that I won games for my team because I landed a 3 man Q and got my health back up. She will quickly die if she heals now because it is so much harder to keep her health up.

Why transfer her self heal?

This is the one that concerns me the most. In a team fight Soraka will be healing constantly and you really need to know your positioning to survive and play Soraka well. healing up with a max W Q heal really helps her stay in the fight. If she is always giving away her self heal she will be too easy to kill by the enemy. Add onto this that it is a heal over time and it is even worse. Her current strength is super healing early a weak mid game and a very strong late game. I can understand tweaking her early game because she scales into late game so well but this change will hurt her late game a lot. It was already pretty hard to keep her sustained in a late game, 1.2 second CD on a heal that takes 10% max health adds up really fast and when her health is much higher at this point it is even harder.

I'm scared she is being forced to just poke.

So much power put into her Q and her W is made so incredibly weak that it will not be worth it to get W. She was so unique with her healing style but this will just give her another poke support style. Won't this make her a weaker version of Nami with less cc but a bit more heal? I'm really scared of these changes and I am afraid you are changing things just to cram her mana restore back in. Riot, I feel you are eliminating the healer of LOL and I would really like some reassurances that removing healing isn't the aim and would like some context on what the aim is for these changes.

If Sorakas name was Lee Sin then riot would second guess their suggested rework. We're just going to have to deal with Soraka being garbage until Riot eventually power creeps her again.

Unfortunately she will likely become weak with the currently proposed changes. She'll just be a Q spammer with a nice E ability...I might not even bother leveling up W with the changes they have currently.

Shes really just a numbers issue. .8 ratio on her W. Potential 2 second CD and a base heal of 300(windspeakers). It can all be toned down and fix her.

I agree. Her numbers could be tweaked a bit as Windspeakers really put her in the OP category (It's a 0.6 AP ratio though not 0.8). I think a lower heal amount is fine but only if she isn't paying huge amounts of her own health to do so. The 10% health was to make her a prime target for sniping and that was the risk for having such a large low CD heal. It made positioning very important and made flanking and pick comps her bane. There were many teams in which I would not pick Soraka as she would be a bad choice despite her being my main.

I mained her all last season and would pick her into bot lanes you would think counter her. It led me to believe Soraka is countered by poke bot lanes and she counters all-in bot lanes. She burst heals in small fights well but getting poked down and not being able to heal up without getting more poke is, in my opinion, counters her.

I also mained her last season. She excels in extended fights but is poor against burst. She would be a terrible choice against a Brand/Zyra/AP Blitz/Annie support for example (and that's just support options). Soraka can also be zoned out which is a tactic many tanky supports can use.

Poke isn't really a weakness for her as she has Q poke that can sustain her. As you say she is really good at counter-engaging because her E is so powerful and really messes up combos allowing her to get heals in between abilities.

I thought moving her sustain to her Q made for a really unique choice. Do you want more sustain Q or more team heals W? But the changes make it so that only Q is an option...if that.

Actually I think it'd be more of an opposite of a Q spammer. Her self sustain is as good as completely removed, and thus any meaningful reward for hitting my Q is removed since it deals crap damage and crap healing. Therefore, I'm not even going to risk building AP and going into the range to hit it - instead I'll build Warmogs (which is the only way for me not to kill myself by doing my job) and Spirit Visage, stand far from the fight and just spam W on people.

Good job, Riot. If you wanted to kill any interaction between Raka and her opponents you managed to pull it of perfectly.

A heal with tanky items you would be paying 300+ health for 190+ 60% ap heal (which would be very little with tanky items). The math....is awful. She won't really be very useful for healing except for her Ultimate. The changes are really really scary atm.

True, healing with tanky items will be subpar - but unfortunately, it will be the only option. I don't onow if these changes were made to "promote interactivity" because it will do the complete opposite by removing meaningful rewards for landing your Q.

The healing over time from alignment buff should increase the duration of windspeaker's blessing on allies since it heals them over 5 seconds. So in a way it's also a buff :P

But I can see why people don't like the change. Especially if alignment buff doesn't stack when hitting multiple champions.

I like how Q now slows all enemies hit, not only the ones in the center. This should make it easier to land her E.

The not hitting multiple people is minor in my book but the really long duration to get that heal and the giving it away is a problem. I do agree and I like the slow on Q too. It is a bit weak at 30% but as you say it would be a lot easier to root with E. However, we already have tons of supports with better CC we only had one healer. It is a worrying change to move so much power into her Q and out of her W.
