Ranged vs Melee in top lane: statistics

There have recently been many complaints about the disparity between ranged and melee champions, and how ranged champs have a huge advantage over melees. This is especially important for top lane, which features ranged, mobile melee, and immobile melee champs. I decided to look at some stats (top 15s) to objectively decide whether this is true or not. The champions are divided in 4 categories: ranged, immobile melee (who suffer extra hard against ranged), mobile melee, and 50/50 if I couldn't decide. champion.gg was used for all stats.

First off: win rates

  1. Kayle (ranged)
  2. JarvanIV (melee, mobile)
  3. Urgot (ranged)
  4. Pantheon (melee, mobile)
  5. Sion (melee, immobile)
  6. Singed (melee, immobile)
  7. Quinn (ranged)
  8. Swain (ranged)
  9. Yasuo (melee, mobile)
  10. MonkeyKing (melee, mobile)
  11. Nasus (melee, immobile)
  12. Jayce (ranged)
  13. Rammus (melee, immobile)
  14. Irelia (melee, mobile)
  15. Mordekaiser (melee, immobile)

5 ranged, 10 melee, of which 5 mobile and 5 immobile. However, win rate obviously doesn't mean everything (Urgot top is not OP), so we need some more data. Play rate is another important stat: if something has a high play rate it generally also means the champ is strong, especially when he also has a high win rate.

So next one: play rates

  1. Riven (melee, mobile)
  2. Jayce (ranged)
  3. Irelia (melee, mobile)
  4. Darius (melee, immobile)
  5. Kennen (ranged)
  6. Poppy (melee, mobile(?))
  7. Nasus (melee, immobile)
  8. Gnar (ranged)
  9. Yasuo (melee, mobile)
  10. Malphite (melee, immobile)
  11. Renekton (melee, mobile)
  12. Fiora (melee, mobile)
  13. Rumble (melee AA, ranged spells. 50/50, immobile)
  14. Gangplank (same as Rumble: melee AA, but ranged spells. 50/50, immobile)
  15. Teemo (ranged)

That makes 9 melee (6 mobile, if you consider Poppy mobile), 4 ranged, and 2 50/50 (both immobile). A slight shift towards mobile melees, probably mostly because people just like playing mobile champs. However, even win rate + play rate isn't quite enough to really say something. Fortunately, champion.gg also makes a ranking based on all stats combined (therefore purely objectively). It's probably not 100% correct, but it's pretty close.

Final one: statistical ranking

  1. Jayce (ranged)
  2. Gangplank (50/50, immobile)
  3. Irelia (melee, mobile)
  4. Yasuo (melee, mobile)
  5. Nasus (melee, immobile)
  6. Illaoi (melee, immobile)
  7. Kennen (ranged)
  8. Renekton (melee, mobile)
  9. Kayle (ranged)
  10. Darius (melee, immobile)
  11. Riven (melee, mobile)
  12. Swain (ranged)
  13. Fiora (melee, mobile)
  14. Teemo (ranged)
  15. Olaf (melee, immobile)

That makes 5 ranged, 5 mobile melee, 4 immobile melee, and GP who is 50/50.

There are obviously more stats available, but I feel like those 3 (win rate, play rate, statistical ranking) combined should be enough to give somewhat of a correct ranking. Let's add all 3 together:

14 ranged, 12 immobile melee, 16 mobile melee, and 3 50/50.

So even though some people feel like ranged (or mobile) champs currently have a huge advantage in top, based on statistics it seems incredibly balanced. If I made a mistake somewhere, or if you feel like I incorrectly classified a champion, please tell me.

why did they nerf multiple time lee sin while he had 45% win rate? why did they nerf leblanc a lot like removing her silence while she had 44% win rate? why did they olaf olaf while he had 48% win rate? why did they olaf darius in season 3 while he had 49% win rate?

oh right, cause win rate doesn't matter

http://na.op.gg/statistics/champion/ get to op.gg get to master tier win rate press on "game played" and look at those who have an insane amount of games played to not have a biased sample

Jayce has 55% win rate with a sample of 1200 games played Kennen has 55% win rate with a sample of 1000 games played only melee on toplane that has an insane win rate are Riven 55%Irelia 52%(is that a lot?) with a lot of game played because they're ekko on steroids countering range with cc+insane mobility Poppy 54.4% win rate and 600 games played. Balanced they said. Rumble 52% win rate , and is ranged Gangplank has 55% win rate, but his sample is somewhat low (300 games) and is ranged

overall: Jhin has 56% win rate with 2k games played Caitlyn has 53.50% win rate with 1k5 games played

mages in general have more than 53% win rate and between 500 and 1000 games played

only melee played that success are Hecarim Olaf Khazix LeeSin in the jungle, because they don't have to lane against ranged champs Riven Irelia toplane with the balanced Poppy none in the midlane

what riot is telling me is: "become trash and get to plat if you want a good melee/ranged balance"
