I was thinking about this item and I was wondering if it just wouldn't be better to put +X% attack damage (20%?) to the item instead of +50% crit damage. It make the item bad most of the time because of the 100% crit build for ad carries and it's hard to make people change their build in soloQ. Of course you can put the buff on someone else but it feels wrong.
Ability power is the stat shared by AP champs and Attack damage is the stat shared by the AD champs so why not just put the universal stat on the item to make it more versatile.
