My idea for two new manaless mage items.
There is definitely a few gaps in a comprehensive range of fun items. I want to take this post to suggest two new items that could lead to some more interesting builds for a range of mages, and off-mages. The inspiration behind these items was recognizing a lack of Spell vamp options, and manaless 10%-20% CDR options. Which brings us to my first Item.
Working Title: Storm's Awakening (Visually a Crown, Collar, Socketed Headband, or maybe Belt) Build Path: Blasting Wand + Kindegem + 940g = Storm's Awakening. (Total 2650g) 200 Health 60 Ability Power 10%-20% CDR (Edited for range of acceptable values) Unique Passive: When damaging two enemy Champions with a ability (Same source AOE), gain 4 Magic Penetration, and Increase Movement Speed by 1% for 5 seconds. Effect can stack up to 7 times.
Explanation: An item that procs only off attacking enemy champions with AOE abilities may seem strange or pointless, but after consideration I've found two types of champions that could utilize this passive very well. Type 1 belongs to the Mages that can lay down a consistent AOE throughout an entire fight (Amumu, Anivia, Karthus, Katarina, Mordekaiser, Rumble, Sejuani, Swain, Vladamir, Xerath, and Zac). Type 2 belongs to the all in AOE that can proc quickly to deal lots of damage, and then use the move speed to get out when done (Kennen, Vel'Koz, Viktor)
Why its fun and a good addition: Its immediately great to have more options on the 20% CDR front (especially manaless), but the passive brings a new meta objective to teamfights, by making sure to optimize their AoE attacks with multiple targets in mind, instead of focusing on the closest easiest kill. By slowly stacking magic pen, its particularly good on AP Fighters that can stick in the fray and reliably hit multiple champs (Katarina, Rumble, Swain, Vladamir, Zac)
Why do I think this item is balanced? Of course all items are subject to necessary tweaks, but item is equivelent to a manaless Athena Unholy Grail, with inspired passive by Guinsoo's Rageblade. Asasssin's and bursty mages typically don't have the controllable AOE (catching two champs in one ability consistenly enough to build stacks) or the CDR to make this item viable. (Sorry Akali, Evelyn, Fizz, Leblanc, Kassadin) Katarina may be the only abuse case I can come up with, but she's been OP lately anyway.
Next Item is actually a two-part with revamp of an existing item that see's little love or attention.
Revamp: Moonflair Spellblade (It's not cost effective early game, and not worthy enough to keep late game) Build Path: (New Item detailed below) Lunar Ring + Seeker's Armguard + 515g = Moonflair Spellblade (Total 2950g Near Lichbane) 80 Ability Power 50 Armor 50 Magic Resist Unique Passive: + 10% Spell Vamp on abilities used against slowed targets.
Explanation: An item that procs Spell Vamp only off slowed targets may seem strange or pointless, but after consideration I've found three types of champions that could utilize this passive very well. Type 1 belongs to the Mages that can lay down a kit slow, followed by large chunk damage (Anivia, Cassiopeia, Cho'Gath, Diana, Fizz). Type 2 belongs to the champions who might edge some sustain off it, but strongly benefit from the stats (Evelyn, Karthus, Gragas, Heimerdinger, Lissandra, Nunu, Sejuani, Swain, Viktor). Type 3 are champions who can make this work with other items that slow like Rylais (Vladamir, Annie, Malahar, Morgana, Ryze, Veigar, Viktor).
Why its fun and a good addition: It adds more option to spell vamp for the game, with the condition that your target be slowed. I feel this adds a cool dynamic and leads to many fun possible build potentials. (Combinations with Rylai's and Lissandra's) The short duration of most slows, means that attack combo's must be re-considered so that you can maximize spell vamp passive (following up with an AOE ability grants less SV) This item is really meant for the upclose mage who has to get in some faces, and may need to sustain a bit which there are few core items for that purpose.
Why do I think this item is balanced? Of course all items are subject to necessary tweaks. It's strong enough to become a new staple item, hence the high game cost, but there are trade offs. No Cooldown reduction, mana, health, which are always key stats. The passive can only be made to work in certain conditions, and if your using an aoe ability you're only getting 3.33% Spell vamp. I think its strong but fair and could get some struggling champions a hand.. ahem (Diana, Fizz, Gragas, Nunu, Swain, Viktor)
New Item (Half step for Moonflair Spellblade) Working Title: Lunar Ring (Visually a ring. -_-) Build Path: Null Magic Mantle + Amplifying Tome = Lunar Ring. (Total 1235g) 30 Ability Power 30 Magic Resist Unique Passive: Tenacity or Movement slowing affects are reduced by 25%
Decent overall item, that would be AP equivelant of Hexdrinker, but I just needed a stepping stone for the Revamp Moonflair Spellblade. Unique Passive here would be replaced with the spell vamp on upgrade (as happens with some other items.)
Any feedback, suggestions? I would love for a red to comment on possibilities.
