The Art of Looking for Bulletholes in the Wrong Places - Upcoming PBE (Patch 8.15)

Seeing what was on the PBE reminded me of the discovery of Abraham Wald where he made some important findings relating to the armoring of fighter planes during WW2. If you don't get the reference, then take a look at this article (https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/bulletholes-bombers-how-measurement-wrong-places-weakens-suisted).

So, after the Riot devs:

  1. nerfed the healing and shield items (which were used to keep squishy adcs alive in lane),
  2. removed the extra missions from the support items,
  3. increased the power of bruisers and assassins champions,
  4. increased the likelihood of true damage,
  5. increased the importance of the scuttle crab - leading junglers to gank botlane as early as level 2 or 3,
  6. made it more difficult for the ward missions to be completed,
  7. reduced the effectiveness of zombie ward,
  8. nerfed adc items (cost and effectiveness)
  9. reducing the effectiveness of runes that adcs use,
  10. introduced items that are better used by toplaners than intended adcs, and
  11. Dropped the health and magic resistance of botlane champions. And, so on.

We now have on the PBE, in the interest of helping adcs, the brilliant idea of increasing the cost of starting support items to reduce the amount of health potions that support champions can carry.

According to DotEsports, supposedly, this is to make it harder to play damage supports in botlane. The remaining healing supports which have survived the nerfs to the healing items were Soraka, Sona and Nami - all of which are squishy as heck in the early stages. (Sona and Soraka will be especially hit by this.)

The consequences though as I see it will be that the botlane will just be ganked sooner. Damage supports are more likely to be more ham. And the first back to base will be much sooner in lane - long before the ADC can afford the BF sword.

Is it just me or are the changes being made to supports and adcs showing little signs of forethought or planning? It is looking more and more like we are drilling holes in the bottom of Summoner's Rift boat to let the water out, only to find more flooding back in.

Riot just wants supports to be a rarity. Admit it.

And the community doesn't want supports to carry.

Huehuehue.

Not just "not carry" but they want them to be the wallflowers in the game and have zero to no influence either.

Maybe, just maybe if mages were actually playable mid, they wouldn't be played botlane ? If you're ranged, you're supposed to be able to pressure melee champions, I'm sorry but a level 2 Talon shouldn't all-in me and delete me, or a level 3 Zed taking 70% of my hp with one rotation because I tried to poke, or a Yasuo being insensible to poke with bone-plating + second wind + his shield + windwall and he actually harasses me when I'm ranged and he's melee, or a item 3155 shitting on any burst mage, and rushing item 3157 being a priority while it doesn't provide any mana nor mana regen, fucking up your wave-clear (waveclear nerfed on mages when their role is to actually waveclear efficiently yay, while AD assassins can have a better waveclear than them)

Well, making mages more playable at mid won't solve the problem.

Currently, ADCs just take too long to ramp up, are too easy to gank and supports are largely powerless to save them (e.g., 15 minutes without botlane wards, the overvalued scuttles on the river by the drake triggering premature ganks, etc.)

So ADCs will still be in trouble even if mages get their way back to viability at mid. (Ghostcrawler and Meddler seem to think that having more botlane carries is a good thing -- so just putting mages back into their old spot will not be enough.) The intent may have been to make botlane more like toplane (i.e., more variety) but the consequences of the changes this season are that: most marksmen (even those that are somewhat playable on botlane currently) have become 300 gold minions and supports are now bodyguarding champions that really shouldn't be getting that extra protection.
