WHAT IF...

We were to take a champion that is somewhat of a pain to balance in a solo lane due to becoming a brick wall and reworked him to fit into a DUO lane. No, I'm not talking about Mordekaiser, I'm talking about http://img08.deviantart.net/7244/i/2014/185/b/0/aatrox_by_alimika-d7p9jjo.png

Now, before you get your pitchforks and call me a hypocrite let me explain.

Aatrox suffers from a very specific problem; He lacks anything that makes him unique and delivers on his THEME of a demon of WAR, who invigorates the losing side to overcome all odds and emerge victorious. It does make him sound more like a support-y kind of character who'll fight alongside weaker "allies" to lead them to victory. Somewhat of a battlemaster support.

Just like Mordekaiser he could benefit from a rework that delivered on his themes and made him unique and NOT the generic Diver kit with a demon-warrior wrapping. He needs to be more satisfying to play and provide cool and unique ways to deliver on his theme and bring something to the table.

Now, I know, this might just be a stupid idea but in THEORY; Would making Aatrox a support-y fighter work, one that could potentially be played as a SUPPORT in a DUO lane or just roll top or Jungle if he had to?

Personaly i'd love to see ad warlord support Aatrox, but there is one thing we need to remember - there are Aatrox mains out there. I dont want to take a champion they love and throw him into rework mill. Its the worst thing that can happen to any main - unnecessery forcing existing champion to a new role just because it "sounds fun". MM you should know something about this.

If Aatrox mains are "K" with this then I really think that its great idea.

As an Aatrox main who loves the champion for both his thematic and his gameplay, I'm pretty opposed to this.

Making him into a support delivers slightly more on his thematic of leading battle, but at his core Aatrox is still a bloodthirsty god of war, and whether he has allies to share in the bloodshed or not really adds little to him. Aatrox would be just as happy fighting everyone and leaving all but one dead just so they could tell his tale.

Going the support route also destroys the things about Aatrox's kit that I really love. The clutch moments when you're at 5% HP and every time you heal you get a spike of health just large enough to survive. The strong burst of his empowered W. His E and R that are great damage tools that everyone forgets about. His passive making him almost impossible to kill if you actually play well and keep track of when to fight.

Aatrox definitely has problems. He's a little on the weak side (I'm not gonna sit here and day he's garbage, because he's not, he just takes a much higher level of skill and experience to play effectively than someone like Jax or Irelia) but he can still do useful things. His kit has some unhealthy mechanics and some other mechanics that are simply poor design choices and don't deliver as well as they should. But I don't think that pushing him into the support role is the right way to fix these problems.

On the subject, I think it would be cool to see a champion that's a master tactician/strategist. And when I say that, I mean an actual tactician, not a dude who turns into a bird and kills people with magic :P

Soooo Furthering this idea, what would his supportish kit look like?

  • AS/AD Buffs for him or his ally?
  • Free lifesteal?
  • Damage reduction?
  • Movement speed bonuses?
  • Are these all conditional?

I like this idea alot but I wanna know more, what sets the battlemaster from the rest?

Malicious Metal40 votes

A Battlemaster would differ from your usual Healing and Peel support in that he lacks raw UTILITY but offers specific in COMBAT bonuses that allows him to dictate the flow of battle, providing specific bonuses to his allies in form of buffs that help them do their job.

They'd lack healing like Soraka, pure peel like Janna, heavy CC like Alistar and Nautilus but offer more OFFENSIVE buffs. They'd be able to accent their allies strengths by allowing them to succeed in combat rather than offering simple things like peel and co.

Susceptible to being picked off one by one or having assassins just dive their carries but deadly in an all out WAR (5v5)

That sounds like a terrible idea. Let me explain why:

So what he sounds like to me (in his new form and role) is as an Aura Provider champion, which is the reason why Sona was garbage for years. Auras provide quite powerful stats for the entire team but the bad thing about them is that the power is invisible as it is passive in nature. Just stat boosts that don't leave any visible traces, making them feel incredibly lackluster because the champion that provides them does literally nothing but stand near his team and provides "moral" support. Auras need to be incredibly powerful for a single person in order to be visibly powerful and that would simply mean the champion would be a pick/ban material for who knows how long. Just look at Lucio in Overwatch.

Furthermore, you'd want for a solo top laner/jungler to be reworked into a duo lane support? I'm genuinely surprised that Aatrox mains didn't cannibalize you already. Being a support is a dreaded role by the communty's standards and condemning a champion to a punishment like this (by a rework and not by original design) would make the offended players leak the US's nuclear launch codes to the public.

Although i am not opposed to the idea of an "offensive action" support, i don't believe Aatrox is the champion for that role. Just put yourself in their shoes and imagine Mordekaiser being turned from a solo laner to a duo lane support. I don't ever believe Riot is going to rework a champion into a different role. It has to be a new champion.

Ralanr17 votes

With the way they described him, he should have been a support. And it's not like he wouldn't fit. We have a sadistic ghost jailer as a top support.

Edit: Also I think "Warlord" sounds better than "Battlemaster".

Abandon12 votes

I personally don't want my main champion, who was always designated as a damage dealer to be moved into the support role. He is a diver and is being reworked as a diver. The "fight to the death" and "inspiring" his allies was only a method to stir more bloodshed and cause more havoc on the battlefield. Aatrox is a selfish character, he is not in it to 'help' anyone, he thrives off meaningless wars and does not care who wins or loses. He is a do as he pleases type of guy, if he wants to prolong a war - sure he'll give a 'helping hand'. The consequence being his help can cause numerous types of side effects related to blood-thirst and violence.

Whilst I appreciate the idea, I really don't agree with this direction for this rework. You're basically doing what they did to Morderkaiser. You're taking a champion that some people really enjoy and forcing it into alien territory on some whim that it may work. Whether or not it will work is not the problem, the problem is Aatrox already has some kind of established identity to those who've played him. He has ONLY been ever played seriously in the top, mid or jungle. Why force a champion to undergo such a transformation, forcing a MAJOR rework when you can indeed fix him up to be much more healthy in the role he was intended to be? I feel this battlemaster/tactician you desire should be built from the ground up as a different champion rather than built around a vague possibility of an established champion.

tl;dr - you leave aatrox alone. let him be the generic demon war guy that we aatrox players all know and love. use that idea to make a new champion instead, it seems to be a decent idea.

I can't speak to the rest of what you said, but this stuck out. Right now the game has plenty of diver type fighters, whereas what MM is describing would be the first of its kind.

Abandon6 votes

Just because there is potential for something to be good doesn't mean that you should do it. The issue with this entire concept is that it banks on the idea that the players WHO ACTUALLY PLAY THE CHAMPION will be down for having their champion's identity COMPLETELY REPLACED all because some random folk on the boards thought it would be fun to dream up a concept that is much better suited for a new champion. Putting this in Riot's perspective, why would they go out of their way and put EVEN more work on themselves for a major rework overhauling a champions ENTIRE kit when they could have easily just fixed him up in a smaller scope/moderate rework and save this other concept for a later champion design?

If you still don't get it, then listen... It's not about the 'potential' that frightens me, it's you folk and your lack of ethics when regarding an entire community and player-base that does. I'm sure avid Morderkaiser players were not happy when they GIMPED Morderkaiser and forced him into the role of 'ADC' and I'm sure you wouldn't be happy if your main champion was changed into something else all because of the possibility that it "would be the first of its kind". So, why then is it that you think it's fair game to put Aatrox and his community on the chopping block for your dubious experiments?

Ralanr2 votes

If all Aatrox needed was some small changes then I feel Riot would have done that years ago.

I understand your frustration (I've seen it a bunch of times with every rework) but I feel a lot of these only focus on what the champion means to them and not what the champion means to the game as a whole.

The problem with Aatrox (IMO) is that his lore presence and gameplay are too different. Each has a different aspect that's supposed to make him stand out.

Lore Aatrox is some warrior who makes a habit of turning the tides and invoking bloodlust in warriors that would have lost otherwise. He basically inspires people.

Gameplay Aatrox is a sustain champion with a revive mechanic that either beats you with better numbers, or is useless. He's not very inspiring.

Now you are correct that such a concept would work for a new champion. But why build up a new character with this concept when we already have one with the right background. We don't need a champion that's "what Aatrox should have been".

Plus war isn't just combat. It's more strategy than anything else. It would make sense for a "God of war" to be somewhat tactical.

I could see them doing this in the future, but honestly, I think we need to figure out where support is going as a class first. If these queue times end up messing with things enough, Riot is going to take a hard look at support.

They are spending an awful lot of time and effort on mitigating the problems to ignore the core issue. If things don't improve, I wouldn't be surprised to find out they were going to make supports the next big class update. Or possibly next pre-season.

Ariel the Cruel2 votes

If things don't improve, I wouldn't be surprised to find out they were going to make supports the next big class update. Or possibly next pre-season.

While a support role class update could potentially lead to some really big "wins" for Riot, I don't see something that small in scope really fixing the problem. Support role problems are systemic to the design of the game. 4 gold/xp revenues, 5 champions, asymmetrical map, a design philosophy that utility is toxic in large amounts (Riot's getting better about this one), and the emphasis on snowballing for shorter games. This combination of factors are what makes the support role such an undesirable position. The game by design doesn't encourage supports, but requires someone that can handle the short straw.

Unfortunately, this is a common element among MOBA clones right now. It's not unique to LoL. Which is why a "class update" wouldn't be enough. It's also a large reason why I was looking forward to Dawngate (RiP) taking off. The address a lot of these problems.

Ralanr1 votes

How'd they address supports?

Ariel the Cruel4 votes

They didn't really address supports specifically, their game was better designed to eliminate or mitigate the problems support role has in traditional MOBA format.

  1. Excluding Mina, Dawngate "supports" weren't designed to be slaves. The Dev's went so far as to state they wanted to move away from that mind-set.

  2. Symmetry Dawngate had 2 lanes and 1 jungle. The primary jungle objective was in the center of the map. Each quarter of the map was symmetrical to it's opposite. This means each lane carries the same amount of power and importance. Excluding jungler and "role", it didn't matter who went where.

  3. Revenue Dawngate had 4 "roles" that you selected from before each match. These dictated where the majority of your gold came from. These were passive benefits selected at the start of the game - not items. They had a drastic affect on your income, ensuring there was minimal competition for CS,kills, etc. (Most common comp was 2 glad, 2 tact, 1 hunt

  • Gladiator: CS
  • Tactician: Lane minion deaths (talisman), and harass (FQC)
  • Hunter: smite + hunter's machete/talisman
  • Predator: Kills/assists and damaging Spirit wells (Affected team passive income). Bonus exp on kills/assists.

In this context, supports weren't defined as being "the champions who can survive on almost nothing". They were there because they were genuinely needed for the team. They weren't trapped into only going one place because every location (jung, 2 lanes) had the same amount of power (where as Riot insists on making bot lane the most important).

oh, almost forgot. 4. Wards

  • Everybody got a 1 ward trinket. That was it. No sight stone. No sweepers. No pinks. If you wanted more vision, you played Ronan. His wards ignored brush and terrain.

When Aatrox was first announced I was pretty much expecting him to be like the concept you describe. A demon that only appears during war, to turn the battelfield for the losing team, but with a bloody price for the victory. I was expecting a strong dualing champ, who supports his team with offensive buffs, not a diver who excels on solo fighting... But I don't wanna see him turned into a supporter, since there are already people who main him and will probably outrage over such a dramatic change (which is quite understandable), so I want him to become more teamoriented! I thought of an ability that would alert him of an on going teamfight and allow him to teleport in the middle of the fight and after arrival he would gain a strong buff and also a buff aura for his allies. It could be coded so it will only trigger if atleast like 4 or 5 champs are fighting in the same area for already X seconds. So he won't just be able to make his team win every 1v1 (that comes to close to Shens niche in my opinion). Of course such an ability needs a fairly high cd (for better visualising: it should feel like someone with baron buff teleports to a minion wave). If riots wants to hold on to his current kit, than I would suggest something like his ult giving him his current self buff and also a buff aura for his allies. And the buff should become stronger the longer a fight takes. For example his ult could count the seconds you are in combat and scale with the duration. Or to further explore the “turn a loosing fight around“ thematic, how about something like: upon activating his ult the current number of dead allies will be counted and make it and the buff aura stronger.

Something I'd like to see is Aatrox changed from a diver to a juggernaut. Then he could be a true embodiment of war, not just another diver/intiator. It would fit better with his lore, as a juggernaut, he would actually be dangerous, and could a pillar for a team to rally around.

Thematically you're ideas could be a great fit for a support role, but i would worry that these changes would alienate Aatrox's small but loyal player base.

Taking someone's favorite top lane fighter/diver/drain tank and saying "sorry, we're making him a support now" wouldn't sit well with them. Or anyone for that matter.

All I'm saying is that thematic execution of a champion is just one piece of the puzzle.

With that said though, a Battlemaster support sounds awesome, it just might not be Aatrox.

Hmm, it could actually open up the support role for less traditional champions if Aatrox could pace the way as a support-type fighter. Fighters in general have always been a rather selfish class, giving them team bonuses could really carve out a new niche that both fighter and support mains could enjoy, giving them a way to transition from those two roles.

Wrong.

Aatrox has a unique kit with unique implications; he has the hard and soft CC of a support, as well as the base stats of one, but not the utility and cohesive kit.

Aatrox simply doesnt know what he wants to be.

EDit: Now let me break this down. Tryndamere: Soft CC only. Veigar: Already a capable support. Zed: Soft CC only. Vi: Already capable of support. Shyvana: No real soft CC, only hard CC on ult. Yi: No CC. Olaf: Soft CC only. Riven: No soft CC, to reliant on an all in and to gold hungry. Jax: Already capable of support, but to gold hungry. Irelia: Already capable of support

Aatrox has soft CC, hard CC, sustain, AND can bait a careless botlane. He is unique in exactly how much CC he brings to the table compared to others of his kind, as well as his raw stopping power for the early game.

Soon, the warriors found themselves imbued with a potent thirst for battle. They followed Aatrox into the fray, each fighting with the furious strength of ten until they had won a most unlikely victory.

Their countrymen hailed them as heroes, but though they had saved their entire civilization from destruction, darkness lingered in the mind of each warrior. Something within them had changed. Over time, their memories of battle faded, only to be replaced with a grim revelation: their acts of heroism were, in fact, brutal atrocities committed by their own hands.

Sorry, but while his lore works fine with him as a Dive Fighter, there is definitely a Support aspect to it. He imbues an army with an unnatural bloodlust and strength that affects them even after he disappears.

When he was first revealed I read his lore and was surprised his kit didn't include an offensive buff to his allies. You could definitely add that without making him a support, but it'd definitely be feasible to make him able to support.

(And since you're a support main too, I'll add this)

Abandon5 votes

I mean if we're going by thematics, when Aatrox's team has a lead he should just abandon his team and join the enemy team and imbue them to be stronger than his current team. That way he can "support the losing team".

I understand that there is some MINOR support-esque vibes in his lore if you're picking it out but if you look towards the last two lines, it sums up his character pretty well.

"Aatrox's true legacy may be a world filled with conflict and strife"

''Some fight for honor, some fight for glory. It matters only that you fight.'' -- Aatrox

Basically, Aatrox is a demon figuratively and literally. All he wants is to experience the endless tides of battle. He cares little for who he supports and he cares even less for who he slaughters.

I mean if that doesn't convince you that he is not intended for the support role then please look at his opening description:

"Aatrox is a legendary warrior, one of only five that remain of an ancient race known as the Darkin. He wields his massive blade with grace and poise, slicing through legions in a style that is hypnotic to behold. With each foe felled, Aatrox's seemingly living blade drinks in their blood, empowering him and fueling his brutal, elegant campaign of slaughter."

Now I don't know about you but typically supports don't tend to want to be the one doing the killing, hyper scaling off each enemy they kill and empowering themselves so they can do more killing.

Look... I get that you see the potential in Aatrox to be a support but you have to understand, we as Aatrox players DON'T want to be forced into unfamiliar territory because some *random had a GREAT idea to change his entire identity. If he can have skills that double as a feasible support buff, great! I just ask that his direction FOCUSES on his INTENDED roles and that is according to classification 'FIGHTER/TANK'.

Good lord no. Not another Morde situation. I was mostly replying to the "IT MAKES NO SENSE" outrage. I basically want what you said:

If he can have skills that double as a feasible support buff, great!

Wouldn't it be nice if Aatrox gave his allies a reason to engage with him other than the standard "Strength In Numbers"? If part of his power fulfilled on the "empower his allies" fantasy? That when your team is outmatched or outnumbered he can turn it around and turn his team into monsters?

And then if it's something that's beneficial early game, the adventurous and stupid of us can take him support for some cheese strats, like Sion/Teemo/Illaoi support or stuff like that.

Basically when I imagine Aatrox being taken as a support, I think Leona when you take her top lane. You dive into the enemy ranks and cause a team fight you think you'll win. If Aatrox had any abilities that actually benefit his allies, or made his allies benefit him, well... I just think that'd be a really nice way to get him back to a healthier spot.

Abandon2 votes

To be honest, none of those picks are conventional "supports" - they are by definition mages that have such high damage output and some reliable CC that people have found a niche for them in a kill lane bot. Adding to this, most of the time you do not want to be taking the kills anyways unless that's how the cookie is crumbling in the teamfights and there's no other way.

I wouldn't mind an ally passive/buff but I just hope that his rework focuses on keeping him a fighter/diver by definition and maybe focuses secondly towards his team utility. It'd be great if he could provide more for his team.

More than likely, Aatrox would end up as an alternate to the ADC than the Support. (like Mord)

Duo lane Mechanics arn't necessarily Support mechanics. Considering that a) Aatrox's blood well is currently set up to help him while attacking, so you would be better off CSing than soaking and poking. b) if your able to farm. You can be both a decent fighter, and the battle captain. (in a similar sense of a utility mages having both burst and support qualities.

I mainly doubt that you could cement him as a support, without changing key parts of his kit, and possibly alienating his player base.
