Support is a class of champions that can stay relevant through the game with less gold that the rest of the team, the utility in their kit is enough to help the team without much need of gold/items.

That's why it's more efficient for supports to buy sightstone.

NoPaxt2 votes

Yes but it wouldn't be so cumbersome if supports had better access to gold. If I'm playing a support tank let's say item 1031 > item 2049. I can make a similar argument for other items for tanks and other roles.

Sure that is always an option to do, but here is another way to look at it. If you, the support, can't be bothered to buy a 100% utility item(even though utility is not only the name of The game, it is also EVERYTHING ABOUT THE ROLE) that you can combine with your gold generation item, or upgrade into an item that buffs your other item actives(which you most likely are getting if you are a support), why would the Katarina mid, Jinx adc, Hec jungle, or the Nasus top? Unlike them, **you **are able to function without the gold, and the game doesn't hinge on you getting fed(you can do quite well with nothing but assists and the odd cs to your name)

The support relies on a good ADC and JG to get enough gold. The support Items help but don't do enough.

As a support tank, 800g for 150 health doesn't help, it's inefficient. For the same cost a Kindle gem gives me 200 health and 10% CDR, a chain vest gives me 40 armor and for 80 less I can get a negatron cloak.

Yeah, Soraka rushing sightstone over AP items and then tying up one slot for that sightstone (or two if you don't finalize the transaction) would like to have words with you. God forbid the ult is powered enough to do more than tickle a bit harder than Solari. Oh, but that's the cost of across-the-map ults, right, Karthas?

JQKAndrei1 votes

The only Ap item a soraka should get is item 2301.

Jyoeru1 votes

So you power her abilities up with. . . ? AD soraka supp?

I guess I don't get it. I understand the %health on W, but everything has a %AP tied to it, yet zero AP in the build. I am lost on the maths here. Static heal with lower CD not buffed at all by AP, and an ult that is also not buffed at all by AP in this build, yet that's how she rolls? How do you even determine priority when abilities say (x/y/z/a + E% AP) and aren't putting any AP? How does that pan out to most effective?

JQKAndrei1 votes

As short as it is, your W has a cooldown, with solari + w + mikael + ult you can shield/heal your target quickier and better for when the enemy goes all-in on him.

It's all about efficiency, when you reach a certain level you have to do some math to see what's best, and pros do that, that's why it's good to check pro builds.

The argument that some supports need less gold makes me sad. It's true to some extent but it shouldn't be is what i think.

My main squeeze Sona may be able to function with less gold, but (and this is more or less the same for every AP or Armor/MR scaling support out there) she can do so much better with that gold it's insane. It's widely known how dangerous a Sona building full AP is, but people neglect that her Powerchord W and E are defensive and also scale from the AP, and that's not even counting how much stronger her W and E themselves get.

It's known that an AP Janna's shield is ridiculously good while her ult's healing gets a 50% AP scaling, Nami's Passive and E utility also scale well with AP. Leona's W scales well enough with armor that i buy Coin on her now instead of the Shield. Same thing could be said about Braum.

Granted part of the issue has been solved by Riot by making Support items cheaper than most (at least for AP champions), but that means that building actual AP (Rabadons, Morellonomicon, Seraph's) for those scalings takes much longer as a support than anyone else, and delay our builds much longer, keeping us the weaker link of the team. Armor and MR wise, the problem may not feel quite as bad, but it's definitely still there.

This is so true it hurts.

I don't get it why only Support have to buy sightstone

For a few reasons.

  1. The item and the role were disigned to be able to function without that gold.

  2. The support is the only role that can merge the sightstone with their starting item. Seriously...

  3. The sightstone mark II gives you 20% item cooldown reduction. Support is, incidentally, the only role who usually builds 2-6 items with actives.

  4. I, someone who has been playing support nearly since I started playing this game, would rather my Soraka or Braum have the 800g vision item that does nearly nothing else, rather than the adc or mid laner.

  5. Although it would be wonderful to not have to be the only one warding, it is in everyone's best interest if one person wards places of interest/frequent action, and everyone else ward where they need to in order to stay safe.(aka, support wards with longer lasting wards around baron, dragon, enemy jungle buffs, while everyone else wards their lanes/jungle camps.

  6. As a support, you are going to be more focused on the macro play rather than the micro play. Your concern is not "beat the enemy laner into submission" it is "support your team in any and every way possible" and if that means you buy a 800g vision item, well you better start warding.

  7. And finally, you don not have to, but not doing so will not only earn your allies ire, but also you will be severely gimping your team by trying give a support a little more power, which is rather like trying to pump a little more horsepower into a scooter. Sure, you will succeed, but did it actually make enough of a difference that it offset the cost of having no headlights?

**Because no-one else wants to. **

And honestly, neither do Supports. It is just something we have to do.

And this is why you're a cyka blyat hard stuck in bronze V. Change your childish mindset and you'll see yourself get plat in a week.

Didn't even check my profile before spouting off racist nonsense, eh?

Oh, i'm sorry, didn't knew playing on eune was a race, i'm going to check my privilege as soon as i have some spare time, don't tell me i'm a sexist noob please. You're right after all, adc shouldn't be forced to build damage as well, what if i want to build full tank so i don't die a lot and my teammates call me feeder?

You know what you did by tossing that cancerous Polish comment at me, don't try and play innocent.

...do you even English? Where exactly did I call you Polish? Nowhere.

Again, don't play stupid.

You stereotyped me as a Polish player because I am on EUNE and tossed a Polish insult my way because of it.

The only champions who buy Sightstone and aren't support are junglers with ward-hopping capabilities. And even they don't always do it. Put simply, other roles can't afford to fall 800 gold behind or they won't remain competitive, but supports don't have gold anyway so why not?

Zelorxon1 votes

You can build it on other roles as well, the problem is that since how the game is made it's either too late to build it or you have to give up an item slot, this is why junglers have the green smite.

Think of sightstone not only as a way to pick up free kills, set up rotations and save your ass, think about it as an item that gives ou 75 free gold for every ward you put down, logically the earlier you start using it the more gold it generates, now you can delay it if you want to complete boots/support item, but you should defintely build it asap to increase at maximum its gains.

Alex Luu1 votes

the only other area I'd say would ever buy a sightstone besides support would be top lane as a tank....mid needs to dmg,adc too and jungle already has a warding item of their own

Escheton1 votes

I quite like buying ruby sightstone on Sion. Especially because I like rushing ZZ Rot. 1600 for 500 hp thats extra effecient due to the resists. And I get to have 2 rots in play. Yes plz.

Mecha MaIphite1 votes

Because supports don't need to spend as much on damage/tank items to be useful.

SlashStriker1 votes

Tanks are hard to kill while Squishy Supports like Soraka and Nami can be deleted easily

Mecha MaIphite1 votes

So are mages and ADCs. That doesn't make them useless.

What squishy supports lack in damage, they make up for in utility. Look Janna or Lulu. Their whole kits are centered around CCing the enemy or buffing their allies.
