A Way to Fix Tanks: True Damage Reduction.

TL;DR: Slightly nerf cc, heavy nerf or remove % max damage from their kits, and add this mechanic as a result to help tank survivability. This type of damage reduction would function like regular damage reduction, but it will equate true damage as well. Considering there's so much damage, defensive ignoring stats, and better access to true damage, something like this could help save tanks and let them re-enter the meta in toplane and jg (although jg prefers fast clears atm) without them being broken as hell and taking over the meta. Tanks should be, ya know, tanking damage. Right now, they can't even do that because they don't possess any damage reduction period. However, they possess % max health damage and a ton of cc. If we toned down or removed the max health damage (also lower some regular damage), and took a bit of cc duration out (obviously what would happen would vary by case) we could add this lifesaving mechanic to allow tanks to do their namesake: Tank.

My idea is kinda split between it being in tank's kits, or an item(s). I'm leaning towards items since Juggernauts are also having the very same issue tanks are having when trying to deal with damage. Instead of making one item have the entire thing (which could very well end up overloaded and op), I decided to split it to one MR item and one Armor item that both possess this "True Damage Reduction" (You can't stack both and gain 60%) .

Magic Resist: -New Item- Sacred Mantle 3000 Gold Item

  • 50 Magic Resist
  • 450 Health
  • 20% Cooldown Reduction Builds from: Kindlegem + Null-Magic Mantle + Spectre's Cowl Combine Cost: 550 Gold UNIQUE Passive: 30% True Damage Reduction UNIQUE Passive: Gift of the Mother- When you drop below 15% HP, an aura blesses allies around you, granting 20 armor and magic resist, and 20 AD or AP (adaptive) for 4 seconds. If you die before the duration ends, they gain an additional 10 armor, magic resist, and adaptive damage. Does not stack.

Armor: -New Item- Divine Shield 3000 Gold Item

  • 55 Armor
  • 400 Health
  • 20% Cooldown Reduction Builds from: Kindlegem + Warden's Mail + Cloth Armor Combine Cost: 900 Gold UNIQUE Passive: 30% True Damage Reduction UNIQUE Passive: Hero's Legacy- When you drop below 20% HP, you gain an aura that grants nearby allies 10% Attack Speed and 5% Movespeed for 3 seconds. If you die before the duration ends, the effects double and last another 2 seconds. Does not stack.

Any thoughts? EDIT: Or regular damage reduction is fine. Either way tanks need some form of it to do their job.

I don’t think you get the point of True Damage.

Its either that or regular damage reduction. I just don't appreciate the fact how much true damage became more available for other champions that are not Yi, Fiora, or Vayne. Tanks just need some form of damage reduction.

or Riot could stop handing out true damage to everyone faster than Oprah hands out new cars

Gotta add "True defense"

Or have tank stats scale alittle less linearly with tank items and make it so true damage and max health damage is more of a requirement to quickly deal with pure tanks.

Have a few pure defensive items give +10% hp armor and mr for example.

The game has a ton of % max health, current health, missing health in kits to the point its the sole counter to tanks. LW being changed and more true damage being added in just sentenced tanks to death without being able to do shit.

"Have a few pure defensive items give +10% hp armor and mr for example."

That might be a better idea for a Unique passive for both items if these effects I tried giving them are too much or are too little.

The only way i see of nerfing true damage, is to rework tank items to give a lot more hp, with less defenses, so they give around the same ehp while making flat amounts of true damage worse. Obviously Vayne won't be effected by the change.

There's a much easier way: Nerf % Pen. They reworked it during midseason to be better in general. IE and Conqueror are both conversion based.

Can't we just cut down a bit on the sources of True Damage in the game?

"True Damage Reduction" kinda defeats the purpose of True Damage to begin with.

Idk, i've been asking for Conqueror to bite the dust, and it ain't looking like that's gonna happen. So it probably means they also might not cut down any other sources. Because true damage totally has some counterplay.
