Malzahar doesn't feel like a DoT mage anymore. what is he?

I haven't played malzahar. since about a year. way before the reowork. then. he had good damage on his E. his W was great DoT as well. and his Q was chunking enemies for massive damage ((yeah giant enemy crab). today i played him for the first time since his rework. he didn't feel like a DoT mage anymore. brand is a good example for a dot mage. he lands a spell. chunks you. combos them. the dot stacks or adds up. malzahar now how two dots. his E and ult. personally i don't consider his ult much of a DoT. just like his old ult. it technically is. but its a single target point and click that does a specific amount of damage of targets hp.

now the biggest problem i have with him. is his E.

his E does no damage. compared to his old E. the damage on the E is utter garbage. his Q does no damage compared to his old Q. i believe the scaling was 90% on the old one.

anyway. all his damage is in his pets. W. the clunkiest. ability of the mage rework. blown up by AOE attacks. his whole kit is based around his basic abilities. not his passive. not his ult. but a basic ability. makes no sense right? why isn't the voildling thing his passive?. that makes sense to me.

now his passive. well. at the beginning. it was the most broken thing ever introduced in a rework. it was too strong. but now its been nerfed about 3-4 times already. and its pretty much. a meh ability. that you have 0.25 second window of time to make use of and basically counters things like a blitz hook or a thresh hook. displacements.

tldr: malzahar doesn't play like a dot mage. he doesn't play like a battle mage. not much of a burst mage. hes too niche. weird champion atm that feels awful to play and doesn't resemble old malz nearly as much. old malz was much more fun

It was, before his rework.

His E into Q damage is still relatively close to the same depending on when you land Q. Land Q a second or 2 after E and you get much more time on the E so it evens out. This was probably done so that if you happened to get hit with an E in lane you don't get chunked for 1/4 your health.

Remember when old malz would just shove tbe wave with E and if you were a melee champion being in range of his ult was almost guaranteed death

I do, and i dont miss. it Es damage should be low its obnoxious tgat his base farming strategy was also a zoning tool, it punished you for playing with malzahar

New malz aint perfect but his old design was such bullshit he was the sleeping god of mid lane and whenever you saw him it sucked the life out of you

Ofcourse if you pick melee into him. Pick anything with poke like Lux, old Kog, Ziggs and he will have a hard time. Even Syndra and Karma used to beat him up because he could never get close

Sounds like a pretty binary design to me, outrange him or lose

iTaLenTZ2 votes

Outrange, outsustain, pick hard cc. He had a lot of counterplay. That is why he was never picked in D4+. Not to mention QSS makes him useless

One item (QSS) making him useless basically highlights just how binary he was.

Partially true. He was a dueler who transitioned into a tankmelter later in the game. As a tankmelter QSS had less impact on him and his burst was weaker as well.

New Malz yes

old Malz no. It got rid of suppress sure, but the flat damage still went through and its 550 + 130% of AP

I'd sure as hell keep that tether going.

Except your biggest point about playing melee against him is nil because a large portion of this game is counter picking. Malz naturally pushed the lane by csing and trading and it made him vulnerable. His ult locked himself down as well as his target and made him vulnerable. He had sufficient weaknesses before, and after being reworked he was too over powered and they needed to nerf him so hard that nobody wants to play him now except to abuse any little strategy that is good in the meta. OP and you are right, he was strong before and a sleeper god but he wasn't unfair. That being said, what about jinx's strength as an ADC? Jinx, since release has been the staple META adc and hasn't left. Jax has always been a strong pick except when on-hits were nerfed in the wake of feral flare.

TL;DR: Before malz had an identity as a DoT control mage with sufficient power to hold his own, and now he's a sub-par memelord

He basically turned into an Anti-Assassin in my eyes.

Edit: When I say turned into, I mean in the end he wound up as strictly that.

he was an anti assassin.

Exactly, I didn't say he gained it, he just lot his DoT Mage feel in favor of some minor Minionmancer aspects

He always was, except before he was also good at it.

He basically turned into an Anti-Assassin in my eyes.

You know what counters an assassin more than a percentile suppress and a couple crabs eating at you?

Insta Death.

That is what old Malzahar had when he had higher base damage and higher ratios.

Honestly... He makes me think of a portable target focusing sunfire cape.

He is just around... Damage is nothing like his old self but he is just... there...

Brand isn't a DoT mage. He's burst mage, with the "DoT" being a small 2% extra on his normal abilities.

item 3512 item 3060 item 3151 item 3116 was all you needed back then now you need like 60 items to do 1/1000 of the damage he used to do.

I am really confused, New Malz is great. I liked old Malz as well but i am perfectly happy with new malz, his new passive is so powerful.
