That is how the system should deal with AFK.

I think the solution is simple.

For the draft solo / duo mode (also ranked games) it would be enough if:

AFK

  • should not have possibility to join the game after 3 minutes if he was offline from the beginning (early is very important) or for example 5 minutes during the game (after 3 min)
  • punishing by eg loss of essence points or even experience
  • punishing by some kind of penalty points, and after collecting a certain number of them - suspend account temporarily

Team with AFK - draft / ranking game solo / duo is based on a random selection of players and they are do not know each other, while in the case of 5-players flexible games the team should be responsible for their affection:

  • if they would lose - they should not lose points, and they should even get them for the loss of time
  • if they would win, and afk left the game, eg 10 minutes before its end (depending on how long the game would last) - they should receive: experience points

Team without AFK

  • if they won, they should be rewarded in the normal way
  • if they loses, they should lose more points

To base the matches on such rules would eliminate the presence of a troll as it would result in suspension of the account.

Better - not press "No" but - leave your suggestions if I missed something - I will correct my idea straight away in other way it will be easy to guess that people who pressed "No" and do not want chang problem - are simply trolls.

"My ISP had an outage, so I lost a level"

Really? That's beyond ridiculous.

It should be AFK problem... why others should be penalized for one person who could not sort out his problem with internet? I you was AFK few times it is not ISP fault, it is your fault becouse you was know it that it may happened and you still decide to risk.

Could you believe that after 5 years I have never had dc, high ping becouse of my ISP? What kind of ISP you have? This is their obligation to provide for you proper internet connection.

I'm not trying to say that within those 5 years I never was AFK but it was maybe 5 times and now I know how it can be stressful for others, how it can destroy good humor.

I'm just thinking that mostly AFK are small kids or pupils that hey decide to play in LOL a "5 minutes" before they will have to go to shool/eat dinner

Once I even heard about a guy, who by trying to explain his very bad score he just turn on torrent client (it always will increse delays betwean internet packages) to show for teammates his high ping as a reason of his bad score...

.... guess what, speaking as someone who has WORKED for ISPs: Nobody's immune to outages or hardware failures, and they're rarely predictable.

By your rules, nobody should ever play League of Legends. Your rule basically says you shouldn't play if you 'know that it may happen'. As a result, anyone who knows ANYTHING about technology should know that it 'may happen' at any time. It is ALWAYS possible to have a problem. Always. 100% of the time. There is literally never a time where the chance of an internet, hardware, or personal problem happening is 0. Ever.

So, as a result, if you believe a person should only play if there is no chance of a problem happening, then nobody should ever play.

ISPs usually use something what is called hardware redundancy which is mean that in case of hardware failur - system will switch (in milli secounds) their tasks to different hardware so end-client usualy is unable to feel it. Even if - it will be only like a "high ping" it will not disconnect us for sure.

In last 6 games I had 2 AFKs... how many points I would loose if those games would be a ranked games?

If there will bo no penalities it will be still like an invitation for trolls to use system for their own fun (AFK)

Eleshakai1 votes

I'm not saying there should be no penalty. I'm saying that your idea of a penalty is bad, because it's way too punitive of things that are outside a person's control.

Redundancy is great, but it still doesn't make people immune to outages. Because that redundancy doesn't help in the event of a connector failing, a cable getting damaged, or a problem with an entire node occurring.(ex. water damage to a node usually won't ONLY effect the primary circuit, it will effect the redundant circuit in the node as well since they're side by side and the water is unlikely to splash onto one circuit and then go away in most cases)

Neosphoros1 votes

What the heck? Where do you live man? Within 5 years I HAVE NEVER HAD DISCONNECT - PROBLEMS (IF I EVER HAD) WITH CONNECTION NEVER EFFECT ON MY AFK. This is XXI century! Water damage to a node?????????

Eleshakai1 votes

Congrats. You're the lucky one. Not everyone has your luck.

Basically what you just said is 'I JUST WON THE LOTTERY. WHY DOESN'T EVERYONE ELSE HAVE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS?'

I don't know where you live that water damage is not an issue, honestly. In a perfect world, the nodes are completely waterproof. In the real world, animals/vandals/storms/car accidents damage the casing around the cmts/node peds all the time, resulting in improperly sealed units which can get water damage. And, unless the damage is directly reported, the company who owns them may not even know that a deer rammed the ped.

Neosphoros1 votes

I'm not a millionaire. I live in UK - rain every day, lots of squirrels, dogs, rabbits, cats, there is no only vandals that will make a damage to casing just only to have excuses why they were AFK. I'm studing and I'm working like everyone else. I have a standard Broadband Internet Connection. I have never had any fails on line. Only once a year my ISP doing some fixes but before that they are sending letter about exact date. Is your ISP keeps wires in some kind of cardboard boxes? To use hardware in specific environment ISP have to provide some protection regarding to specific standard that will protect from weather, snow, ice etc. (mostly called IP) Now it is almost impossible that some ISP will use some unprotected hardware to face problems and to loose money. It is very unproffesional.

What I am saying is simple: You've been ABSURDLY lucky if you've NEVER had a connection failure impact a game.

I've only had it once in the past ~year, and I am extremely lucky. Most people see occasional connection issues. I know this, because the number of times I accessed an account that was more than a year old and saw NO pre-existing tickets when I worked at the ISPs I worked at could be counted on one hand.

That's not to say it should be common to have failures, no, not at all. But it DOES happen and it DOES happen to most people OCCASIONALLY.

As far as your comments about weather... of course you use weather protection. But the weather protection is NOT perfect. If I have a sealed ped with a CMTS/node/cable card and the ped has a deer run into it by accident, that deer can dent it and cause a tiny break in the seal. Or, some random kid walks by and hits it a few times with a baseball bat just to 'have fun', or a car accident happens nearby and the car hits the ped, or really bad hail hits it and dents the case, etc.

This damage may not cause the connection to fail entirely, and unless some good Samaritan walks by and: a) Sees the damage b) Knows which company manages the ped c) Bothers to report it to the company the company will have no idea the seal is broken. Since they have no idea the seal is broken, how can they repair it? They can't. So the seal is broken, the ISP doesn't know, and then it starts raining... suddenly water leaks in, shorts the system, and the cmts/card/node goes down, dropping connection for a neighborhood. Someone reports it, the company fixes it. But that's still a sudden, unexpected network outage.

You may say this is rare, and on a 'per ped' basis it is quite rare. But ISPs have THOUSANDS of peds... and what is rare on a 'per ped' basis is NOT actually that rare overall.

I guess - I will write something that will be weird for you... I do not know any man (from real life) that ever was AFK because he had some problems with ISP. They were AFK only because they had to leave the game.

I've only had it once in the past ~year, and I am extremely lucky. Most people see occasional connection issues. Every protection have to adequate to specific environement - to weather, animals or different factors in your area. I do not believe that everywhere the biggest problem are deers. Much easier is to believe that it is RIOTs fault (and his servers), but of course it is much easier to put a guilty on everyone than admit to the mistake or problem.

This damage may not cause the connection to fail entirely, and unless some good Samaritan walks by and: a) Sees the damage b) Knows which company manages the ped c) Bothers to report it to the company the company will have no idea the seal is broken. Accident is mostly self-reported to the office (sensors).

Eleshakai1 votes

Okay it's official, you have no idea what you're talking about. You think they spend the money to line EVERY SINGLE INCH of the ped with sensors that are keen enough to detect every tiny bit of damage while ALSO making those peds out of material strong enough to resist ANY possible damage humanity and nature can throw at them? That's ridiculous... as is the concept of them paying someone to monitor the sensors of the thousands and thousands of nodes they have.

The peds are already expensive enough... they don't want to make them more expensive by making them out of diamond lined with expensive fine wiring.

(Also: You're trying to say that the time that my connection died due to a brief blip in the network where my modem ACTUALLY went offline was Riot's fault? Huh.)

Neosphoros1 votes

Not every element need sensor. Just for exaample - lack of signal from client modem could mean that something is wrong and if it is everything is shown on ISP diagnostic system. Some of those errors are logical conclusion of specific problems that systems can recognize.

I'm not trying to say that - do not put in to my mouth - words that I never said. I have tried to say that it is because somebody is AFK does not mean that it can be for sure - his fault it could also/or mean (by the logic) that it can be also RIOT fault... becouse why not?

Riot's servers don't often go down, and Riot's servers will virtually never ONLY disconnect one person.

Neosphoros1 votes

"...Riot's servers will virtually never ONLY disconnect one person"

Why? How do you know it? Why you are so sure?

Eleshakai1 votes

Because there's no logical way for it to happen except for someone at Riot to manually reject your connection... and none of us are important enough for Riot to waste time individually trolling us. Server administrators don't have that kind of time.

If Riot's server were to go down, it wouldn't be able to accept ANY connections. If you're the only person losing connection, the most likely explanation is that the problem is close to home: either in your house, or pretty close to it. If you're the only person in the game, but there are a thousand other people who also can't connect who live in an area near to you, the problem is most likely not Riot, but rather a server that happens to between you and Riot that is either overloaded, rejecting connections, or down entirely.

Imperial Pandaa2 votes

Awww come on, dontcha know that the internet companies are prepared for ever disaster? Like that Magnitude 6.9 Earthquake in Alaska yesterday. Everyone knew is was coming so no one was playing a game or anything like that. It is also why no cars were on the road at the time.

Oh wait...

The snide was more directed at the OP and not you. Seemed more appropriate to tack it onto yours though.

"How do you know?"

Do you know how the baker making his bread, and car manufacturer making a car? In the same way you can not know what kind of business process are made in RIOT... discconecting players (maybe) can be one them - you can not know it (as I do not)... but it is only sugestion.

What about "water damage", "deers ;)", "system errors"... human mistakes?

RIOT servers operate about 100mln players - this is huge load - systems may simply fail - even - time to time

Eleshakai1 votes

Okay now you're going into tinfoil hat territory, my misguided friend. Taking it logically, what possible reason would they have to disconnect players manually? It just doesn't make sense. It makes even less sense than the people who claim Riot bans people in order to ensure continuing revenue by forcing them to create new accounts because there is literally no possible benefit.

To the rest of your post.... Again: Systems failing would not AFFECT ONLY ONE PERSON if it was on the terminus. It would affect EVERYONE hitting that terminus. Riot's servers ABSOLUTELY do fail from time to time, whether it be a result of simple coding issues like memory leaks, malicious attacks like DoS, or even just simple hardware failure. But those types of issues don't cause ONLY ONE PERSON to disconnect. The system fails, and all connections get terminated. That's the way these types of hardware work. You don't have a 'hardware failure' that prevents just one person from connecting. It just doesn't happen.

there can be many reasons: business process, system assumptions or even just a joke?

It depends on system construction. One server (in the meaning of - one device) can operate some group of players, second one can operate another group but single players from those two servers can "meet" in the same room in game. If only one server will fail - there may only one player be disconeccted from same game that other players are operated by different server (database).

Just a joke? Okay, enjoy your conspiracy theories and complete lack of understanding of game infrastructure. You clearly don't want to listen to reason, so I'll just let you be. Have a nice day.

Joke it was one of the examples but as a human I able to say that we (people) have weird ideas (or mood) sometimes. This is not theory, this is life.

You - as a player, aslo can not know anything about game infrastructure so minimizing my knowledge is hypocrisy.

@lag and losing because of teammates.

If you care about time then your only tool here is /ff. Competitive ladder in a team game and you want the system to favor just you? That's garbage. The system cant care about any individual more the the rest. So lets make this not just about you but all players. You know how I keep saying you don't seem to understand how MMR systems work? Your really not changing my mind here with this comment man.

Only because, that the kick the dog is less harmful than cut my finger off - it does not mean that owner of this dog should let this dog - bite me.

Instead of trying to eliminate "reason", RIOT trying to "eliminate" a effect. It is even possible to say that he is not even trying to eliminate anything and he even provoking to create "effect".
