The next big class project should be tanks.
It's not hard to feel useless as a tank lategame this season; while virtually everyone that builds damage has scaling like crazy, tanks themselves have piddly health scaling and gimmicky at best AP/AD scaling. I feel like tanks' abilities have deserved a good long look ever since the induction of Runes Reforged. Could their %hp scaling on their abilities scale with level as well at the cost of some of their flat numbers per level, and could they get more practical forms of their AP/AD scaling to boot? Since when are tanks supposed to fall off lategame?
's Ki Barrier, for example, offers a 50-100 + 14% bonus health scaling shield. At level 18 when he has 2k bonus health that's a 380-power shield. That sounds like a lot, right? It isn't - that's just 1 crit from a marksman or hypercarry! And look how much scaling from keystones dps classes have - Conqueror and PTA shred tanks to the point of invalidating them altogether! What do tanks have to defend even themselves from this onslaught of shreds and steroids lategame, let alone their teammates?
On the other hand, freaking
and
's 10-year-old kits - what are these abominations' AP scalings? These were no problems back in S4 when no one had keystones and tank items still made them tanky, but now AP builds turn them into all-in AoE assassins. Are they really not supposed to be tanks anymore? Why do they stand out so much from the rest of tanks as a whole? Something should change here!
There are other standout issues with tanks and tanky melees in general - namely
- all the more reason to rework how tanks transition into lategame. If the plan is to revive the class, do it in a way where we won't always see 2+ tanks at higher echelons of play - top players picked tanks out of desperation to meatshield for hypercarries and nothing else yet tanks in solo lanes deserve to do more than just that; also if jungle tanks are ever intended to be a thing again they need some way to deal with scuttle and counterjungling. If the goal is to remove the tank class from the game entirely, however, then do it like ripping off a bandaid going into S10 - that will solve so many issues caused by what's left of the class before they ever come up! No one wants another
top lane situation!
