How do placements work?

Did my first one (my goodness was it toxic, had two junglers over a 'disagreement' but managed to carry) and won it.

Just wondering how they work? I get that they determine your starting league but how much influence do they have? Is it as simple as "win X amount of games, get placed in division Y" or is it down to your individual performance in those games, or a combination of both?

It's based on your MMR. You gain MMR by winning and lose MMR by winning. When you win, you get more MMR if your team has a lower MMR than the opposing team and less if your team has a higher MMR. When you lose, you get less MMR if your team has a lower MRR than the opposing team and more if your team has a higher MMR.

The influence placement matches has on your placement is very significantly less than it was in previous seasons.

If you win your first 2 placement matches, you'll get placed against silver-gold, keep winning and you'll be matched against gold-platinum and will be placed high silver-gold or even platinum if you manage to win all 10

But if you lose your first matches, you'll be matched against bronze-silver and will have a much harder time climbing up.

It's all about MMR, you gain MMR by winning (you lose MMR when you lose), which will place you against players within the range of you MMR. Placement matches are made to determine your MMR, if you lose against a team with an average MMR of mid-silver, then your next match, you should be placed against low-silver players.

At least that's what it looks like on paper.

MMR is MatchMaking Rating by the way.
