People think "oh if I don't mind waiting long for my position then I should have a choice"
Autofill is for other people, not you. Nobody wants to play a position sometimes and there will be no matches if nobody can play a lane. So they use autofill as a solution.
I'd still wait 10+ minutes to have a quality match. I'm not just speaking for myself, I think most people actually want to win their ranked games. Idgaf if its in normal matches because those aren't nearly as competitive and I bet most people use it to practice champion mechanics or just have some good fun with friends. I don't blame the guy that doesn't want to play with me if I autofilled because I wouldn't either. If you're being forced into something you have no clue how to play, how well is that going to go? Autofill shouldn't be in the game unless its 100% necessary. You have about ~70% out of about 1.1 million players in NA playing ranked who are located in bronze 5-silver 1. No reason for it to be in a populated area. You probably don't need it until you get out of D5 where players start getting scarce.
Also, there would be no point in making autofill optional, because it would essentially be the same as just picking the fill option. There would literally be no difference.
I'm fairly certain that people who want to make it "optional" only use that word because it has a softer connotation than "removed".
And for some fucking magical reason matches were still played when autofill wasn't existing.
True. the only problem is you could get support in ranked. (there. cause apparently getting nearly identical things mixed tags you with some hate.) when you only own something like 
as your only...sorta legitimate support.
Meanwhile dodges have become more commonplace with autofill
