Can we Talk about Melee carries?

KONO RUBICK DA··32 votes·6,224 views

Soon, they're going to be the only untouched class remaining in this game when assassins will be reworked.

Who are melee carries? they are melee that: -poorly scale with CDR or in general scale better with attack speed/damage/crit rather than CDR: Tryndamere MasterYi Yasuo gangplank is an exception because his damage are 80% from his spells the other 20% is from his passive that scales greatly with AD and with the reset from his barrels it can lead to a lot of true damage. -they are champions who are able to kill any target in late game and that's why they are called "carries" Yasuo Fiora for example

from this definition, Nocturne Aatrox can also be considered as melee carries, because they fit perfectly to the definition

now Yasuo Gangplank Fiora Nocturne are perfectly viable (in my opinion) and were picked a lot in competition (except nocturne), unlike Tryndamere MasterYi Aatrox (even when viable he was built like a tank) because let's see what they bring to the table:

  • MASSIVE utility, that's what make a pick viable in competition and still strong when behind, and a lot of ranged carries have utility (Ashe Caitlyn Jhin Jinx ) Yasuo is able to protect his team from something like miss fortune ulti, has an aoe knock up every 3.99 seconds in late game, his ulti brings something like 600 aoe damage in late game. Fiora cc and something like a soraka ulti in late game Gangplank global presence, 80% aoe slow, high aoe damage with his ulti.

-a great defense to allow them to teamfight Fiora can dodge everything for a few seconds, and can have a heal. Yasuo shield that can be reseted, windwall Gangplank a QSS+heal but gangplank can bring damage from a high range.

Now, you perfectly understand the problem of some melees Tryndamere , needs to pray RNGjesus in early game to win,

brings no utility at all, his slow is situational and his AD debuff is flat which falls off in late game, his AD debuff not only is useless against champions that doesn't use AD (Rammus Azir and mages) but it is also maxed at lvl 13 because you need his spin to be on a low cooldown, which means that in most of the game it will be -20 AD. he has nothing againt tanks unlike fiora/gangplank/yasuo who have armor pene or true damage, or %hp true damage. MasterYi brings no utility and his defensive spell requieres him to stop attacking, he can dodge a spell but he needs to use his Q to get into his target, there is also a small delay before his Q goes off unlike fiora's W.

Aatrox has the most frustrating sustain

has the LOWEST damage i ever saw as a carry, does not scale with crit unlikeTryndamere Gangplank Yasuo MasterYi (his q can crit). his knock up doesn't last enough time to be considered as a good utility. He also has NO spells against tanks like tryndamere.

i feel like at least Tryndamere and Aatrox should be reworked, feel free to add your opinion i would like to see how you would manage to make them viable, and not frustrating (like tryndamere or aatrox).

{quoted}

3 pages and no mention of xin i am disapoint

well xin is a champ that i don't really know. I don't even know if he is a carry but what's more is i don't even know if he needs a rework. His kit as a carry is good, it provides him TONS of utility (mini-stun,knock back, knock up, slow) and tankiness for teamfight (ulti armor/mr, sustain). If he were to be underpowered, he could use some buffs.

At this point, I feel that GP is more of an AD caster and Aatrox more of a drain tank than they are melee carries. That said, I do think that Aatrox, along with Yi and Tryndamere, are in need of a rework.

Aatrox is basically awful or oppressive depending on the patch, and that's mostly because his kit is a mess. Master Yi brings absolutely nothing to a team other than damage, so if he's not ahead, he's basically worthless. Tryndamere has more or less the same issue as Yi, save for the fact he's a good split pusher, but that's really only enabled by his Ult, which has to be the most inelegant ability still left in the game.

We need to reworks, yo.

Thaurron5 votes

I really really hate Yi. His ability to completely disappear every few attacks (late game) is absurd and he only needs two items to do more damage than your adc until they have 4-5. I hate that he isn't very good most of the time but when he's in an ideal situation he feels unstoppable, like when your team has used all of its cc and he can run in and pentakill everyone before they react (largely due to his q making him disappear again) and then push down midlane to the nexus.

Make Yi more than a walking stat stick with an incredibly frustrating kit, please.

IronwallJackson3 votes

Yi has many, many issues, and his mechanically simple kit is the source of most of them. He has very little outplay potential in his kit, be it on his end or the opponent's, so going up against one will only rarely feel rewarding. Then there's that zero utility issue that makes him just as likely to be a hindrance to his own team as he is to be an asset.

Like many other "melee carries," he's a relic of an older, shittier era when Riot was straight up bad at design.

Mandang01 votes

Sure, but has Riot gotten any better at designing melee carries? I hear just as many players complain about Yasuo's and Fiora's kits.

IronwallJackson1 votes

Yes, Riot has gotten better at it. In spite of the frustration caused by both of those champions, they still have avenues you can use to outplay them other than using hard CC and running away. Not only that, but them getting a kill on someone usually requires more than just right-clicking on someone.

I'd call that an improvement.

Troll for Trump2 votes

They just overload Yasuo and Fiora.

Fiora creating a minigame

Yasuo making him so overloaded, he rarely has any weaknesses, ranged champs don't counter him, and he ends up going too much.

HayRoss6 votes

Is there any doubt that Gangplank is an AD caster?

IronwallJackson4 votes

I don't think there's much debate in that regard.

Sahn Uzal14 votes

Trynd needs to pray to RNGesus to win the laningphase... But GP needs to pray to RNGesus to win lategame. (assuming the game is close/GPs team is behind)

He only gets one chance to crit with his barrels (usually) and he can't get 100% crit anymore in a legit build... Let's say, Karthus' ult damage gets halved, but has a 50% chance to crit and deal double damage... It just creates some really abnoxious situations.

The other side of the coin is that GP with, for example, item 3078 item 3142 item 3031 will deal some absurd damage if he gets the lucky crit with his 20% crit.

That's honestly what bothers me about GP, as a GP main, it creates abnoxious situations for the GP player and those playing vs him... -Lucky 20% crits can feel really abnoxious for the enemie, especially if GP has a youmuus. -Lategame it feels like I have to cross my fingers and pray my barrel crits, which can honestly decide if you win or lose the fight.

Sahn Uzal1 votes

I mean... The guy stacked IEs... He might aswell just buy an ER, same stats, same cost but more mana sustain. You can't get 100% crit on GP in a ''legit build'' where you're not wasting CDR (TF + ER = 50% cdr) or some other stat/passive...

KONO RUBICK DA1 votes

if i was him, i wouldn't have built trinity force, the sheen damage is nothing compared to the 70 AD of ER.

Sahn Uzal4 votes

Wowowowow, Gangplank NEEDS his Trinity force mate! A build withiout a Trinity force simply isn't a Gangplank build in my eyes.

GayFluffyUnicorn2 votes

The Sheen dmg is totally needed. Extra dmg on barrels, extra crit dmg, really smooth build path except for the AS item. Just look up ehm tobias fate i think. He did the math behind pen builds, full crit builds etc. Btw if you are in laning phase and would go for ER you'd need another crit item to reach your CDR cap. Now with trinity you have 45% cdr at the twenty minute mark if your laning phase is going well which means 60 second ult+barrel reload. So ER would just delay your powerspike further. Though i have to admit i still haven't found a pleasant build atm. Not reaching the 100% crit is really really really bad. Since the LoL God hates us you will never get the crit in a deciding teamfight >.> The TF change really fucked up gp...

SlashStriker6 votes

i dont like aatrox Blood Thirst / Blood Price damage/heal. How the hell do you choose which one you need?

I think this can be replaced with something like 3rd attack aatrox steals health from enemies as bonus true damage and fills his blood well. Or maybe this can be Active Effect similar to kassadin's W

His ultimate is pretty much Master Yi's Highlander ripoff only much weaker. On top of which it scales with AP

So he basically needs 2 new ability. Blood Thirst / Blood Price - reworked Massacre - reworked

BatchBustsMeta5 votes

Aatrox needs some work badly, and tryndamere could definitely use some tweaks as well. The thing with aatrox, is his kit is pretty wonky, and his base stats are freaking horrible. I feel like any moment I can just get blown up instantly as aatrox. So I guess that leaves going tanky on him... but like... why?? all you offer for utility as a tank is a super unreliable knockup. I could play Sion for an unreliable knock up with like 20X the damage and like 50X more utility and cc. aatrox is just in a auper bad spot and riot seems to want to keep him there.

GULAG 4 U1 votes

Aatrox has more Dmg than sion honestly.

BatchBustsMeta3 votes

No way a straight tank aatrox beats a straight tank Sion in damage. Especially not at up front burst.

TequilaZombie2 votes

The problem is that if they make him slightly viable again he turns into a murder machine. His kit is way too toxic for him to be viable. He's basicly in the same spot as Yorick or old Poppy.

BatchBustsMeta3 votes

Yeah, but he hasn't been a murder machine in a long time now. :-/

tryndamere needs a rework aswell. his kit is 100% broken. op is right. he relies on rng to win lane. either way win or lose, hes contributes nothing to a team but constant splitpush.

his entire gameplay completely misses the mark thematically aswell. instead of palying a raging babarian who isnt afraid to dive into the middle of the enemy team and just destroys an opponent, hes mostly shit in teamfights (unless in the lower divisions maybe), and he tends to completely avoid direct confrontation.

he probably needs a complete relaunch on the level of sion. they will probably rework him into a bruiser. it fits his theme more than the highly mobile and mechanical intense gameplay of a melee adc like yi, yasuo or fiora.

Tobias Brackner1 votes

You know, there are plenty of champs who don't exactly expect to win lane (especially depending on the matchup) so I don't see what the problem is. And what's wrong with being a splitpusher? Shen does that shit all the time along with plenty of other champions. Oh, also he contributes INSANE DMG to his team once he gets going.

Um, not sure about you but all the Tryndameres I see have him dive right into the fight, start screaming instead of dying, and kill the enemy team. He's about as shit as any other melee carry in terms of being CCd to hell and shit.

He doesn't need a relaunch, he has a unique identity that needs to be played around to be used effectively, and that identity is plenty connected to his theme.

its not about if he expects to win lane or not, but how. his reliance on rng is toxic. there is no skill or gameplay involved. just crit fishing with a couple auto attacks.

you crit 2 times in a row at lvl 2, congratulations you just won lane. if not, youre going to be mostly trash.

and outside of laning, tryns playstile completely misses the mark as a melee adc.

aatrox is a terrible example aswell. he has his own issues.

your own experiences dont matter. youre sitting basically in bronze. everything works down there. if you invest a coupe games into him, you could probably carry with urgot at your mmr.

champion balace doesnt exist in bronze and your anecdotal evidence to the contrary, at mid level mmr and upwards hes trash outside of splitpushing, while being ridiculously strong and obnoxious as a split pusher.

he relies on rng to win lane

So if someone wants to roll the dice on him winning in lane then they are welcome too, he's got tools for that but he can also easily get his ass kicked.

Outside of laning Tryndamere splitpushes and can show up for some nasty teamfights.

you still dont understand that its not about the fact that he can win or lose lane like every other champion, but how he does it.

riot removed the 4% crit mastery years ago for exactly the same reason tryn needs a rework.

were talking about which champions need reworks and why. i gave valid arguments as to why tryn needs a rework and you rebuttet with "but in my games..."

Reflect on this dude. Just reflect on this.

you brought up anecdotal evidence from bronze games. anecdotal evidence is a terrible basis for an argument in the fist place, but you also referenced games in which champion balance is almost non existent, since people constantly make so many and such grave mistakes at your mmr that the slight difference in champion power are not relevant anymore.

you have to understand that youre playing an entirely different game down there, and that your mmr doesnt even factor into champion balance for riot. theyre balancing the game for plat and upwards. and at that mmr tryn plays exactly how i described.

what makes you think 100% of the Tryndamere's I see are "bronze"?

because thats where youre playing. if youre watching higher ranked games on streams or replays, you can see that tyndameres never actually teamfight.

the way tryn is played at higher divisions is he doesnt leave lane. ever. he keeps pushing and applying map pressure. if the enemy team comes to take him out, he retreats. then he resumes pushing as soon as theyre forced to leave.

either way he never participates in teamfights, because hes actually not very good in these situations and a ridiculously strong split pusher at the same time.

he needs a rework.

laning relies on rng, which is a toxic mechanic. mid/lategame he fails to live up to his role as a carry and regarding his theme.

they reworked fiora "just" because she was overall just a bad assassin instead of a generally good duellist and melee carry and didnt live up to her theme. the same applies to tryn, plus a bunch of other reasons.

his ult isnt the best design either. it takes up a large portion of his power budget and makes him very binary similar to old poppy.

have you?

i know ive played a lot more than you. please go get me a youtube video less than a few month old of a plat+ game where tryndamere carries a teamfight.

even if he were able to, there is still the problem of his lane interaction and his reliance on rng to win lane. this issue alone warrants a rework. because its not ok to just roll a dice to win or lose lane in a competitive game.

even most guides recommend exactly this playstile

~Keep pushing, take all enemy jungle. After your Statikk Shiv, you should be unstoppable. If you are on the blue side, the purple team’s top jungle should be yours. Try to steal their golems, wraiths, and red buff (usually 13 minutes) constantly after you have pushed your lane. On the purple side, you should try to steal wolves and blue buff whenever possible. Constantly focus on applying pressure to both jungle and top lane.

Your mid game goal is to destroy and constantly push your lane that the enemy jungler and mid lane comes top to gank. When this happens, and you are sure you can’t escape, just fight and take one of them down. It will be a 1 for 1 trade. While you are 1v2/1v3ing top, your jungler and mid laner can roam bot or even take dragon if it’s up. Basically you are ‘distracting’ the enemy team so your team can get ahead by taking objectives.

tldr; Main idea mid game is to keep pushing, take enemy jungle and control top. Bring the enemy to you.

http://www.lolking.net/guides/140436

just go through them. pretty much every high ranked tryndamere main will tell you your job is to splitpush nonstop and apply map pressure instead of grouping and teamfighting.

there might be situations in which he might be forced to, if his team is losing the game, but its basically the worst case scenario for him.

Tobias Brackner1 votes

Goodness gracious, look at all these pointless things you are saying. How does playing more than me guarantee that you know more about Tryndamere than me?

It's almost like you are saying useless things because you know your core argument has no substance.

Also as a side note I decided to read some of what you posted in the hope that it wasn't all just you coming up with useless arguments

When this happens, and you are sure you can’t escape, just fight and take one of them down

Diving in on a 2v1 sounds pretty yolo barbarian to me. Imagine if he had Sejuani with him to stun those two? Wait...what if...what if he could dive in on the whole team like that???? gasp Could it be possible???

Aptest4 votes

i have no opinion specific to the topic of melee carries.

however, i feel that no champion should have "kill any target late game" as one of their features.

i feel that no matter who you are playing, there should be a bunch of champions that late game will mop the floor with you, and the game is better if the "other team" has a reasonable chance to already have one of them in the team.

for instance i feel that jax should lose to bursty AP champions **if **he is on a full damage build.

.

P.S.

playing off the "any target" rant above, i feel it is ok if some of the champions are optimized against a specific opponent set. if trynd is "anti AD" that's fine. There are a lot of other champions that have a kit specifically strong VS auto-attacking or AD scaling or AP burst champions.

what's the problem here?

Actually, Riot has split a lot of those up into to two different classes: Divers and Skirmishers http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/developer-corner/3A5uuBw7-champion-subclass-list

Divers like Aatrox are very likely to be worked on next after assassins. That list consists of: Aatrox Irelia Nocturne Vi Pantheon JarvanIV Warwick MonkeyKing Renekton Elise (strangely enough) Hecarim (who I thought was a tank this whole time) LeeSin Evelynn (who I could have sworn was an assassin, hens why she is in the assassin update... Rito?) and Diana.

There are a lot of champs on this list that could either use help or need something unique in their kit so they stand out more (not to mention a VU or two...Pantheon HINT), which is why Riot was choosing between them and assassins, but assassins won out cause they said that assassins are at a point where they can't even make anymore till the class is updated.

Skirmishers (Fiora Riven Yasuo Tryndamere MasterYi Jax Ekko and Gangplank) might see some adjustments with the assassin update since Ekko was on the list and are under the new "Slayer" class with assassins. Other than that, it would likely be a while before they see any work. The class after Divers at the moment looks to be damage tanks since they haven't mentioned any other classes on the table and with how slow class updates are, we wouldn't see an update till 2018 at this point unless they change their minds between now and the diver update sometime next year.

TL;DR: Riot has some plans for roughly half of the melee carries in the works, but it won't be till next year... Also, I think Rito needs another look at their sub-class chart, there are some things not adding up here .__.

KONO RUBICK DA2 votes

agreed on everything.

still hope that riot will update trynd and aatrox.

Atanchan2 votes

Hecarim has always been a sort of diver / tank hybrid. He has pretty solid initiation, but even when that's down he can dive into the enemy team and helicopter the backline to shreds. In fact, pure tank Hecarim tends to be kind of lacking, because so much of his kit is focused on damage and diving.

In terms of Evelynn, I think they still want her to be an assassin, but can't really say she currently is one. After all, she's someone who sneaks into or just flat-out runs into the team's squishies and sticks onto them until either her target or herself dies; hell, her ultimate isn't assassin in the slightest, given it's entire % current health damage, its massive slow, and the shield it gives her. The only thing assassin-like to her is her stealth. I don't think she's going to get any focus in the upcoming class reworks; pretty sure they're putting her on the backburner while they figure out if they do want her to continue to be some sort of stealthy diver or focus her more into an assassin role.

Zerenza3 votes

Okay to clarify Melee Carry=Fighter, there are of course fighter's who are not carries but if they do a rework they're going to do fighter's as a whole and all of these fit this.

AA melee fighter's are kind of falling out of the game, they haven't released one in a REALLY long time because riot HQ just doesn't think it's a fun playstyle and that it adds much to the game.

Fiora is required to hit her Vital's, if she doesn't her damage is extremely low, her Q actually does less than an auto attack when she doesn't hit a vital and her W's cooldown is horrendously long, she's extremely interactive and has clear cut counter's.

Gangplank has his barrels, he's honestly more of an AD Caster than a fighter.

Yasuo, to be fair his kit is really overloaded but it does interact with the opponent and again has very clear cut counter play.

But then we look a tryndamere...He right-Clicks you and chases you down, he has an "i can't die passive" as well. Yes he does have counter's but he's an AA melee fighter, its kind of hard to counterplay something that requires almost no skill to play because it's all auto attacks. The thing with this playstyle though is that he's basically a hinderance to his team because he can't teamfight at all. But at the same time he can make it feel completely hopeless to the opponent because the mechanics of the champion and AA's just doesn't offer much counterplay at all. The same can be said for Yi and Aatrox

I'd suggest we not say anything about AA Melee Carry's because if we do and they do get changed, you'll probably complain because honestly they need to be made more interactive to the enemy and more satisfying to the player.

Mandang03 votes

This is probably the single most central problem to league and has shaped the design of entire classes (bruiser/tank/assassin) as a result. People will point to range advantage making melee carries unviable, but at this point, bruisers/tanks/assassins all do as well. It's a similar problem to that of flash - where the entire game's been balanced around it.

Nekusen2 votes

Are you seriously asking for MasterYi buff ?! If anything, they need to make him require skill.

"Melee Carry" isn't really a class, that just means a melee champion that snowballs.

MOst of those can be split up into skirmishers or Divers.

IronwallJackson3 votes

Melee carry doesn't refer to snowbally melee champs, it refers to the melee equivalent of an ADC, ie: an autoattack reliant champion. Most of them happen to snowball well, but that isn't what defines them.

Weathered1 votes

Just my opinion, but I would rather not give utility to every champion. I don't mean they would be op, but sometimes you just need to keep some champs as the straight damage.

IronwallJackson8 votes

When a champion only provides damage, they're nearly useless if they fall behind, which is no bueno.

Xeruon2 votes

Yep. Straight damage champs that provide no utility are something that Riot calls "Feast or Famine"

They've been trying to avoid that recently.

Weathered2 votes

Completely unrelated, but Riot has also been avoiding instant reaction or weavable abilities, which sucks for a Kha Gragas player like me.

Lots of circles and delayed abilities. Really has me sad.

Xeruon4 votes

But hey, Riven is allowed to exist right?

If they're gonna remove animation cancelling/ability weaving, then they probably shouldn't have a champion based on it.
