Could Shen jungle become a Thing again...?

With all the fuss about the return of tank junglers thanks to the Cinderhulk (thank you Riot, much appreciated -A Tank Jungler Main) I found myself a little surprised that I didn't see anyone even MENTION the possibility of Shen.

Shen jungle was once a perfectly viable, if unusual, pick because of his "neverending jungling"- being both manaless and with strong sustain he basically never had to return to base except to spend his gold, while he could still pressure the lanes at will as soon as he had his ult, turning around ganks ANYWHERE on the map with ease. However, changes to the jungle (I think it was season 4 mainly) basically did him in as his drawbacks (appalling clear speed thanks to his low, exclusively single-target damage) became too much for the new jungle meta, while his main advantages (tankiness and sustain) became less relevant, sending him the same way as Warwick.

However, the changes Riot have made seem ideally suited to helping Shen overcome his drawbacks. Firstly, the introduction of Ranger's Trailblazer and the Gromp buff gave him a massive boost to his ability to clear camps quickly. And just recently, the release of Cinderhulk has finally ironed out the last of his clearing problems, giving him an item that synergises with both his kit (HP scaling on his Q heal and his passive damage) and is role (massive engage tank).

So to satiate my curiosity, I pulled jungle Shen out in my last game. Now, full disclosure, I'm still clawing my way up out of the pits of Bronze Hell that I was dumped in by the stupid placement system this season, so my opponents were really not up to snuff (the opposing jungler was Nidalee, but she never EVER invaded, counterjungled, or tried to contest objectives), but I still got a feel for how Shen works in the jungle. My first clear was definitely on the slow side, but extremely safe- I started Gromp and took blue, Wolves, red and was chewing my way cheerfully through Raptors with still close to full HP (I think I still had my second HP pot) when a fight broke out as our Singed came into contact with Nidalee while he was trying to roam down from top to mid; I peeled off the camp, helped secure the kill, cleaned up the last small Raptor and went back to grab my Trailblazer and a Sightstone on my first recall. Although I didn't actually get Cinderhulk until 13:30 or so (stopped to grab some pink wards and a pair of boots to secure a 7:30 dragon first), once I had it I had no problems clearing quickly and efficiently for the rest of the game. Although the match was the usual spotty mess you expect at low Bronze levels, I found I benefited greatly from the same thing that lets me do so well with Shen support (another pocket pick of mine that I might discuss another time)- the principle of "He's fucking Shen!" (i.e the simple fact of having Shen and his fight-changing ultimate on a team justifies his selection on its own). Stand United into Shadow Dash allowed me to regularly save Singed when he got caught invading the enemy jungle while I was off farming my own, turn around a nasty gank on bottom lane, leading to a triple kill, and save our Kayle during a close duel with Vayne. I was extremely hard to kill (although I didn't even get close to full build before we won) and the early Sightstone gave us impeccable vision control. I even succumbed to temptation and grabbed a Frozen Mallet for additional stickiness rather than the Randuins I'd been planning on

While I don't seriously believe Shen could become a top tier jungler, or even a common pick again (he's still probably too prone to being counterjungled), I still can't help but think he might be worth at least a casual look in the right matchups (against another tank jungler, for example). What do you guys think? Worth further investigation?

His jungle was never viable at any point. Always outclassed by stuff like Amumu.

No.

Well based on your experiences it seems to have some merit. I've done it before the Cinderhulk and while it was slow at the time, its hard to beat a taunt for your ideal ganking tool. And that Shield makes Shen a huge asset no matter what lane he is in.

So really you answered your own question. If it works for you - then do it!

I've seen so many threads about jungle shen recently, and I don't care. If you like it play it. Don't ask for my validation.

He has absurd sustain, but it's hard to speed up that first clear time by much. My biggest issue with Shen is his gank power. Teleport ult ganks are rad, but you have one shot with his taunt, and if you miss it you're out of energy to do much else.

I personally haven't tried Cinderhulk with him though. Jungle was always doable with sufficient Deverour stacks.

I build Enchant-Devourer and then ravenous, after which I build tank. It makes fast clears much easier and keeps him viable throughout the game. But hell, that's just me
