Why Zed is too strong, not just frustrating. The wrong approach is being taken. Here's why
So I can tell what is trying to be done right now with Zed. he doesn't have an outlandish win rate since mercurial nerfs (despite what everyone thought would happen) but now he is just perma banned. to riot, that probably says its more "fear of zed" rather than him actually being broken.
this is flawed logic and for a few reasons.
1.) Zed is pick/ban. there are 100+ champions and many of those can go mid. but zed is at 93% pick or ban. which means EVERYONE wants to play him. that means regardless of experience or skill on a champion, you will probably play him mid if he is left open or be playing against him. theres only a 7% chance he wont be banned or pick.
2.) despite being pick or ban he has close to a 50% win rate which means that everyone is doing at least "decent" on him and can win with only moderate experience on him. newbies still struggle on zed which is good.
3.) Zed has an intense skill ceiling. the more you play zed quite simply the higher your win rate goes with him. if you look at the chart. its a straight line and its clear why. Zed is good. Zed is probably the best mid to take over a game but takes a long time to master. But right now people with less experience are still doing quite well on Zed.
Any time a champion is hard to play, but played often anyway and even wins half the time, that is bad. that means the champion usually is overpowered. maybe not broken, but definitely too strong. Zed is not "op" despite what people say. I'll say that first myself but he creates so many issues just by being himself and those issues he creates do not require a "good zed" to apply them. Even a "decent" zed can one shot enemy adc without counterplay thanks to QSS which forces him to buy GA and only fight once every 5 minutes when GA is up or risk dying to Zed. this is not healthy. Zed has forever been balanced around the fact that he is easily countered with zhonyas/mercurial and now one of those is gone. It doesn't take a good zed to ult in and land one or two abilities before your ult pops for half or more of a life bar of an adc. with duskblade especially its ridiculous. The other day when i was smurfing in bronze a Zed with duskblade ulted me landed only one auto and the duskblade + deathmark took me to 5% health. no skill involved. just a bronzie zed. and that is a problem.
good zed's need to be rewarded and the buff nerfs to him on PBE are a step in the right direction, but the ult needs to be changed in some way to where he has to be in the fray for longer and at risk longer. maybe the old "cant swap back" for a second? maybe something else. I'm not entirely sure what Zed needs to be honest, but I know in his current state he is always going to be banned as long as the mediocre/bad zeds can still one shot the enemy adc with little counterplay.
