The more I dwell on it, the more I hate Sona's current state. I want a rework.
Like no opening punch lines. No sarcastic bullshit. No overstating facts. I'm saying it as short and sweet as I can here (partly so it won't be so long that people will skip over it without reading it). I want a rework. A real one. This kit sucks for the following reasons:
I don't care what anyone says. This kit is BRAIN DEAD. Don't try to romanticize "decision making" and "positioning" to me anymore. I'm over it. EVERYONE has a brain they use to play against and with other players. You're playing an enchanter? FIne, but that doesn't mean you're fucking Yami Yugi out of nowhere. Positioning is something everyone does. Timing is something everyone does. You aren't special in that regard. Play an Enchanter until the grave finds you...doesn't change that fact.
Instead of people trying to stretch just how mentally stressful it is to spam a shield, maybe Riot can actually make some enchanter kits that are more involving and rewarding to play? Like, you guys made Nami. She's right there. Why can't you guys learn from that and do something about the rest of them?
What is the point of a champ if they ALWAYS feel underwhelming to almost the entire community? Like, I KNOW you guys are tired of people crying about how weak Sona is...or seeing that "RiP Sona patch 4.13" image that was floating around. I know you guys are tired of people suggesting Sona's "just not good enough" when she can literally be one of the highest win rate supports at the time. So...why does this keep happening? It can't just be because she isn't seen in pro play, given the fact that many champs don't show up in pros and they're still considered good or "aight". Oh yeah, it's because the way her kit plays out.
You don't do noticeable things in most instances. Early game's been shot and feels bad as hell. Late game's ridiculous but by that time you just spam W like a bonobo. The champ's defined more by her itemization than she is by her actual abilities...something Riot made worse with their rework last year, shoving all that power into just spamming her shit off cd. Like, think about it. When people think "Strong enchanters", they normally list Janna, Soraka, Karma if she isn't nerfed into oblivion, and Lulu. Half the time people will skip over Sona and forget she exists outright, even if she's just as strong as Janna and Soraka and stronger than Lulu in solo queue (Pro play she sucks. Getting to that).
What the hell is the strategic niche of this champ in this strategic game? No, "generally useless -> generally overpowered" isn't exactly a good niche. This was the exact reason Riot wanted to rework Kog'Maw in the first place last year, and it's the general reason people hate him right now (If hyper carries are good, Kog's just blatantly good all the time). This is the reason we had the tank rework in the first place (Make it so tanks are good for specific reasons, not just good because the class is good). Why did we take this advancement in balancing ideology...and go backwards?
Tired of seeing pros/casters embarrass themselves at this point. Sona's kit is a kit that relies on your opponent not knowing what to do long enough that you increase your odds to auto-win the game by a significant margin. Sona's kit doesn't give way for the player themselves to actually show their skill or knowledge in any truly meaningful ways. This was played out at worlds yesterday when Sona actually got locked in. Casters did their usual thing of hyping the pick up, saying she's a "Strong laner with that strong poke damage, but she's easily gankable"...
...and she dies from 100 to 0 starting from a Kog'Maw slow with no jg involvement. Like, I get it, Riot. You can't make EVERY SINGLE CHAMP pro viable at the same time...but this kit is hardly a kit. It's the same cheese you did to Kayle and Master Yi, and I probably hate that approach to balancing you guys take more than any other you guys have in the game, save Teemo (who just isn't even an approach). What's worse is that it's completely counter-intuitive to a support's primary job as a support. I don't have the time to wait until 20 to 25 minutes to start being a dang champion if the point of my kit is to be useful early for someone else that's trying to scale. Assuming the enemy has coordination, Sona's more helpless than the adc she's supporting. I don't like the notion that I'm only winning because I'm abusing solo queue's chaos, rather than actually being good at my champ.
And before anyone tries, it was the same story last year. 60% solo queue win rate when Sona's mini-rework went live, and that translated to 3 W/7 L in NA, 0 W/2 L in EU. I don't really even have words for it.
The more I dwell on it, the more I hate it. Idc what needs to be changed. I want my champ to feel more rewarding to play. I want her to be more about her and less about being a stat-stick. I want there to be some actual noticeable differences between me playing Sona and someone I'm better than playing Sona. On basically all fronts when it comes to the strategic or mechanical aspects of Riot's champ design philosophies, Sona fails horribly. It isn't a win rate complaint. It's a satisfaction complaint.
and her infinite animation cancel combos await you. Leave
alone, easy champs have a place in this game too.
