Bruisers and mages in bot lane is not a sign of diversity - its a sign of an unhealthy burst meta

Frontline Fury··20 votes·8,083 views

Bruisers and mages are now played in bot lane. This looked like more diversity at first - but in reality it's a result of the game becoming entirely focused around burst damage. Games are decided at the very beginning of the matches, so nobody can afford to pick champions designed for scaling.

Marksmen are still picked a majority of the time. Mages and Bruisers appearing bot lane doesn't mean that Marksmen suddenly don't exist anymore.

LordGeovanni1 votes

This is true but they treat it like marksmen are part of this burst meta and the ones who caused it.

Actually, bruisers aren't burst. They're more sustained damage. Assassins and mages are burst.

I think you're thinking of divers.

Bruisers are something like Nasus, Garen, Rumble, Jax. And even Jax is more of a skirmisher.

He's stating that bruisers in the current meta do assassin levels of damage after the purchase of Trinity Force.

Playing as a Mage / Marksman, Irelia and Zed both burst you and both feel like assassins.

We're in a meta where everyone effectively does Lux levels of burst. There really aren't any DPS champions in the current meta, you're lucky if you survive for longer than 3 seconds against anybody as a squishy champion.

I concur. Although as someone who plays Singed a lot, I think he's a decent pick for someone who doesn't deal burst damage.

So you don't mean bruiser but irelia. Just say it and don't try to make it seem bruisers are dealing any sorts of dmg. Since the gutting of steraks they don't deal any decent dmg anymore.

you must not play the game very much

Jax, Irelia, Camille.

They´re all still doing bs amounts of burst because Conqueror still exists, for some idiotic reason. Camille less so because she deals bs amounts of burst regardless of rune.

Those three are all skirmishers, or by RIOT's old classification "light fighters," or if you go back further, "melee ADCs." None of them are bruisers, which contain the two subclasses "Divers" and "Juggernauts."

Think instead Vi, Garen, Darius, Olaf, Volibear, J4, Yorick, etc. Not Yasuo, Irelia, Camile, Jax, Yi, etc.

SithesisLord1 votes

And yet Camille and Irelia are both defined as Divers.

Skirmishers are mostly defined by squishy, DPS based champions with some sustain. Or if you will, DPS assassins.

Divers are tanky DPS champions with some sustain but unlike Skirmishers, they can't get in and out. It's one or the other.

Jax is a hybrid of both, but he's much more a Diver than a Skirmisher nowadays.

3TWarrior1 votes

jax was one of their three, as a note

Automated Riven1 votes

Riot doesn't have a classification for bruisers. Bruisers is short hand for any champion who is melee and builds both defense and offense. All of those champions are bruisers.

And rumbles a mage even by riot on there last subclass release.

Bruisers have the tools to survive burst. Also why Swain is such a dominant bot lane pick - his ultimate grants him so much health nobody has the tools to bring it down early game.

the entire reason Bruisers are put in bot is because they dont get brusted down like most ADCs

LordGeovanni1 votes

As a bruiser main bruisers are burst they only have one option for sustained damage and its also burst item 3078 they sustain in low cooldown low damage (compared to other classes ) bursts. Burst is not how much damage you do its how you do your damage if most of your damage is done in short windows say MonkeyKing E Q with trinityforce proc and item 3748 reset that is burst. same with Jax Darius Nasus. this is largely because damage is so high and defense is so trash bruisers cant afford to take other attack speed items without getting instagibed. Sure some people do defense better than others do defense but defense as a whole is trash.

Burst orientation and botlane diversity don't correlate directly. The main reason for the current botlane meta is the fact that games are too snowball-heavy, conventional adcs are not given the time to scale up and the class they counter the most (tanks) were banished from the game due to conqueror.

Bruisers and mages in botlane are not nessecarily unhealthy for the game/ sign of an unhealthy burst meta. If conqueror gets nerfed / tank items buffed, so that tanks can return to the game. And some of the snowball mechanics are decreased, there can be a meta, where traditional adcs are equally viable as the bruiser/mage-botlanes. You would draft an early game teamcomp with bruisers and mages in bot, that gets heavily punished if you don't manage to finish the game fast (which would ofc be harder than it is now), because of this comp being extremly bad at dealing with tanks and additionally facing the strenght of the scaling crit-build.

Yes such a meta has not been there yet, (so your initial statment is true up to date), but it doesn't have to always be true. I would be quite excited for such a meta, because there would be a lot of strategic variety, probably more than ever before.

LordGeovanni1 votes

Again Marksmen were never supposed to be a counter to tanks. One class countering tanking is a stupid concept in the first place. Adcs were considered to be good versus tanks pre season 4 but not because they were a 'counter' but rather because their safe, easy, and Constant damage allowed them to deal damage at a range where a tank cant retaliate on the adc in a team fight as they are protected by other classes and focused by multiple damage roles. The counter to tank and fighters is grouping up versus them when they are alone.

Glory971 votes

But of course Marksman are supposed to counter tanks. This is the whole point of there being different classes. Marksman counter tanks, tanks counter assassins, assassins counter adcs. Just like rock scissor paper. And it's definetly not stupid that rock specifically counters scissors right? This is the most fundemental concept on which moba-games are based on. And the IE change to crit for true damage didn't come out of nowhere. True damage is most effective against tanks. Adcs exist to counter tanks. To use constant dps to shred down their hp bar, which no other class can do reliably in a teamfight (with the exception of conqueror bruisers right now)

LordGeovanni1 votes

Marksmen are not supposed to counter tanks. Classes are supposed to proform jobs. Marksmen's job is Ranged consistent damage Mage's job is windowed burst damage. Tanks Job is front line damage absorbsion. Fighters do Front line damage absorbsion and consistent damage. The damage absorbsion isnt supposed to be as good as tanks because they are splitting their build but the consistent damage should be as good or better than marksmen because they risk short range to do damage. The only class that is designed as a counter is assassins who are designed to quickly pick off squishy ranged champions. The jobs they do eventually counter each other but the countering of other classes is not what they are about. Marksmen counter tanks was never (pre season 4) about Marskmen killing tanks quickly but rather that they had enough range to do damage to tanks while tanks couldnt fight them back. Moba's are designed around roles and the jobs the roles do not Indiviual classes countering each other.

Certain mages/APCs should be healthy as bot laners. In my opinion, bot lane should be the lane for "back-line artillery" to go, and that artillery can be either AD (Marksmen/ADC) or AP (Artillery-Mages/DPS-Mage/APC), the important aspect of the role being that their primary purpose on a team is dealing damage from the back-line while being vulnerable (generally immobile and squishy) enough to need to rely on protection from the front-line in teamfights and early protection from a support in laning. Mages need new DPS item options to succeed healthily as APCs and physical damage dealers need to be worse at shredding tanks.

If your team composition lacks physical damage: Rumble Ahri Amumu Soraka Then the best choice should obviously be to bring an ADC marksman bot lane to fix that.

If your team composition lacks magical damage: Darius Zed Vi Janna Then the best choice should be to bring a magic damage carry bot lane. Azir Brand Cassiopeia Corki Heimerdinger Karthus Kayle Kennen [AP Kog]KogMawZiggs Xerath Vladimir Viktor Velkoz Orianna Teemo

Painted Celt1 votes

Marksmen and squishy DPS mages should be thought of as the two halves of a primary class called Artillery, with the line drawn between them based on damage type (physical vs magic) and attack method (autoattack vs abilities), and they would be united by their shared strengths of damage output and long-range. All Artillery champion should be allowed to go to bot lane and should be picked based on team composition need (physical vs magic) and preferred playestyle (autoattack Teemo Vayne vs abilities Velkoz).

By the way, I think some Artillery should be considered secondary catchers or even primary catchers based on how much CC utility they have: Ashe Orianna Anivia Burst mages should be absorbed into the Slayer class with either a primary or secondary role as an Artillery or catcher. Battle mages should be split up into all of the different classes, depending on whether they are more like Artillery-Mages/Catchers Anivia, or Juggernauts/Tanks Rumble Singed.

It is a sign of diversity as that is what it is: diversity. The real question is is it healthy? In it's current iteration, I'd say no, but we are closer to a healthy, diverse Bottom Lane than we have ever been since League first ever began and there was no meta.

How is it diverse if there's 2 classes less in the meta. Botlane is just as undiverse as it always was. The champions on botlane simply changed. And overall marksmen and shield supports pretty much don't exist anymore. So now you have mages on bot AND on mid. Doesn't sound very diverse to me :/ [fiora-cool]

Dude not all mages are burst mages,, We have artillery and battle mages for a reason the only 2 that are capable of being in bot lane are battle mages and burst. Plus one of them do single target dps adcs got nerfed so now it’s assasins Mets, after this will be mage meta.

Madsin254 votes

Let's be real battlemages are burst mages with shorter range.

3TWarrior1 votes

would you rather it was "assassins" or "supports" or a second marksman

there are kind of only 6 or so basic classes to deal with so now 2 more are in bottom lane

what experience would it be for marksmen or mages if assassins could function in bottom lane that were not "intended" to be there?

Sire Hippington1 votes

not necesarily, Bruiser and mages could be in bot if things are divers without haveing a burst+snowball meta in theory. However, i agree that right now it's more a symptom of the snowball+burst rather than well balanced healthy diversity.
