Why do people start Doran's Blade?

I'm having a tough time figuring out why people even bother to buy this item.

item 1055 gives you +70 health, +7 attack damage, and +3% lifesteal, and leaves you with enough money to buy one item 2003.

item 1036 gives you +10 attack damage, builds into other items, and leaves you with enough money to buy three item 2003 .

Everyone I see who asks this question is met with the response that Doran's Blade gives you "better trades". I fail to see how this is true, if you consider that the extra pot and health from Doran's is equal to 220 health, while the longsword start gives you a total of 450 health in health pots, in addition to more damage. Unless both laners walk into lane and immediately get into an extended fight that results in one of them dying, the person who starts longsword should win out in the end with his superior damage and more effective health. Longsword also builds into other items, meaning no gold is wasted in purchasing it, unlike Doran's which must be sold later, which puts you ahead of the curve in itemization because your initial purchase was also an investment in a future item.

Caitlyn has a base AD of 50. Add the bonus AD from Dorans and runes, lets say we start the game with 65 attack damage. With 3% lifesteal, you're getting back 1.95 health per auto attack. This means you would have to auto attack approximately 115 times to get enough health back to equal the amount you recieve in health pots with a longsword start.

The other Dorans items give you some sort of bonus you can't get anywhere else. Doran's Ring gives you good mana sustain, and Doran's Shield shaves flat damage off of attacks. Doran's Blade is just a ball of stats you can get elsewhere.

So please, someone enlighten me. Why is Doran's Blade a first buy on ADCs and many AD top laners?

item 1055 item 1055 = 880g for 6% lifesteal, 14 AD and 140 HP item 1053 = 800g for 8% lifesteal and 10 AD

This means you would have to auto attack approximately 115 times to get enough health back to equal the amount you receive in health pots with a longsword start.

A few points on this, your AD increases with levels and lifesteal numbers so you don't actually need the full 115 AAs, probably closer to 90 to heal an equal amount to the 3 pots. You easily auto 90 times in lane, ever time you CS you auto at least once, I'd assume 60 CS (approx number for BF sword) to be 70 autos on CS alone if you and you're opponent are freezing in the middle of the lane. If one of you starts shoving you'll probably jump to around 120-130 autos for 60 CS. Also every time you trade you're going to auto around 2-5 times depending on character/trade length, so you get even more vamp from that.

The stats on D-blade are more relevant after first B even if it doesn't build into anything, it gives 603 gold worth of stats for 440 gold, meaning it's super strong until you run out of slots. Longsword gives 360 for 360, it wins out over D-blade super late because it builds into things giving it better slot efficiency but that doesn't mater until you're 6 slotted so until the D-blade wins out on cost efficiency alone.

D-blade makes you a lot tankier if you get ganked early. That 70 HP could easily save you in a level 2 gank.

Adc's tend to want to stay in lane until they get a BF sword which is a long time and the sustain from doran's blade will add up quite a bit. Also some people like me like to run 1 or 2 life steal quints for just a little bit of sustain since I won't be building a bt or any other kind of life steal until much later on in the game so I'll keep doran's as my only source of life steal along with my runes so I can sustain without having to spend gold on a early vamp scepter. Also the extra 70 health is quite nice, you don't know how helpful that can be early on when someone is trying to all in you, it's like 2 autos or even 1 whole skill which is a lot early game, I think this is what people mean when they say it's better for early trades in an all in the guy with doran's will win the fight since you can't pot up for 70 health during an all in. But there are times (mostly in the top lane for me) where the long sword start is much better. It kinda of depends on the lane match up also and who you are playing. Example if I'm on Vayne I'm more likely to start long sword since I don't need the sustain from doran's since I'm going to be getting Bork first. hope this helps and sorry for typos I'm on my phone, sites not exactly mobile friendly tried to fix them

I think it's mainly the early health and tiny bit of sustain. I don't love starting doran's but I'm kind of getting used to it.

Back in the day I would start Vamp scepter and health pot.

However to answer your question, I believe it all comes down to how you choose to play your lane. I see it as starting dorans and h-pot it is a safe and a neutral start, and starting longsword and 3 h-pots is slightly more offensive start aiming for first blood or early pushing. I prefer starting longsword and 3 pots, but if I am doing bad in lane I will build it into a vamp scepter and add a dorans if I have low gold. I also prefer choosing longsword if the other adc has a support that does not have any ability heals (disregarding summoner heal), or if my support has ability heals (disregarding summoner heal). However if I face a lane that I am not too comfortable with I start with dorans and healthpot as a safe choice.

Because doran blade has more stats and better stats if you 1v1. If you duel until one side dies with just long sword vs doran blade the doran blade side will always win. Skill not withstanding. Because of this, if you go to trade the long sword side will have to back off first every time which allows the doran blade side to get in extra attacks.

A bunch of small factors add up here:

  • You will auto enough times in the lane to get enough sustain to offset the extra health.
  • All-ins favor you on full health. This is a significantly valuable thing at level 1; after that, it's not so clear this matters much unless you have a sustain support.
  • Long sword isn't actually that good an item to build things with right now on most champions -- you want an IE, then you want a Shiv, and then finally you want something your sword is actually buildable into.
  • Current ADC builds delay lifesteal a really long time. A DBlade, or more commonly two, is very helpful for a conventional IE-Shiv carry build. The pair of DBlades is significantly better than vamp for the laning phase.
  • DBlade is a lot better than longsword after your first back.

Note that starting longsword is at least a plausible idea if you are playing a Triforce carry. Probably still not right, but you can accelerate your phage and possibly shape the lane to favor a quick base, so the DBlade player is short of gold.

No one is really stating the real reason here.

Effective health and decent side stats to go with it. If you get all in'd on a trade early game that bonus 70 health(effectively 80-85 health) could save you from one extra attack and give you the upper hand on the opponent to get that first blood.

  1. it is alot stronger thanitem 1036 if you plan a early all-in, as the aditional potions won't matter then
  2. doubledorans is pretty powerfull compared to the goldcosts.
