Riot: Ever thought of an trap ability that enforced dashes?

Ralanr··33 votes·3,411 views

How many of you remember those dash floor panels in Pokémon that forced you to move in a particular pattern? They were annoying right? Now, let me explain how something like this could be implemented into league of legends.

First off, how many weebs watch Soul Eater and remember the first fight between Medusa and Professor Stein where she would propel herself around the battlefield through directional arrows she placed on the floor? I'd place a video of it, but I can only find AMV's for it and I don't want people getting cringed by it.

Anyway, dash traps: the basics of this ability is that you place an arrow down in a specific location and direction, and when an enemy walks through it they are forcibly thrown in the direction the arrow is pointing.

http://images.memes.com/meme/674487

The arrows themselves would not do any damage by themselves, nor would they allow enemies to bypass terrain (at least my rendition of the arrows wouldn't). Their damage would be conditional based on whether they forced someone to hit a wall. Here's an representation of the result.

http://www.toonopedia.com/coyote.jpg

But not only could you slam people into walls, but you can cut off someone's escape by having them run into an arrow facing the opposite of their intended direction! Obviously this would only be a reliable strategy if they were stealthed, but making these stealthed might be cancerous.

One other (and probably less healthy way) is to make it so the traps don't work on the enemy at all, but instead work for your team and can pass through terrain (this is unhealthy because it gives an unintended power to champions who are kept in check by a lack of a specific power. Kinda the same reason why group stealth hasn't been implemented yet).

An arrow would only effect one champion and disappear after its active (obviously). But unlike Taliyah's forced knock up, it acts as a trap favors planning ahead.

So, thoughts on this insane idea?

that is awesome.

let's elaborate. The trap allows allies to jump over walls. but opponents don't go over walls, they get stuck in them

Ralanr3 votes

Not exactly. It would be unhealthy if it provided both (unless of course, allies had no control on whether they activate it or not. But that'd be frustrating). It'd be better if it only effected enemies or allies rather than both.

Aptest2 votes

why unhealthy? its better if it works for both: either the same way for both or different way for both.

Ralanr2 votes

As I explained above, it gives champions who are balanced around their lack of mobility access to mobility. So suddenly your Mordekaiser can jump through walls.

Aptest10 votes

again, why is this unhealthy?

champions like mord are balanced not simply around not having access to mobility, but rather around themselves not having mobility, and other champions providing for them an answer to lacking mobility.

this can be either through catch skills (morg landing a binding, CCing opponent allowing mord to close range) or through providing mobility (whimsy on Mord to make mord into racing mord), or both.

its better than champions like mord are balanced around the existence of lulu / thresh / bard than for them to be balanced around lulu / thresh not being there for them.

IMHO mobility boosts are much healthier way to achieve "mord clubbing opponent" than CC. Because CC is disconnecting the other guy's keyboard, whereas mobility boosts allow for coutnerplay.

Ralanr3 votes

I guess I see it as the same as the ability to give an ally stealth in terms of balance issues.

Aptest3 votes

you did not explain why you believe donatable group stealth is unhealthy.

coutner argument: group stealth works well and is not broken in DOTA2

Ralanr6 votes

Dota 2 is not balanced similarly to league and allows itself to get some really crazy stuff.

But if you want an example of how difficult group stealth is to balance, Riot actually tested out the possibility with Rengar's most recent rework (second time they tackled the concept I think). It resulted in a stealthed Varus sniping you from out of nowhere (and then Rioters joked that Varus became the true assassin).

Now imagine if you got hit by Garen's ult with Garen nowhere in sight and there are no bushes.

Actually that might be a better example. If group stealth was a thing, then Garen is basically taking his bush everywhere.

Aptest3 votes

you want champions to do awesome stuff in the game.

awesome stuff will invariably feel like bullshit to the guy at the receiving end.

some combos are unhealthy. But there's got to be a reason beyond "oh this feels like BS".

Generally, inability to respond (zed's "you can't exhaust or CC me before I kill your carry and if you do i will be CCed in a place of my own choosing"), or forced response that removes your influence from the game for an extended period (Rengar's "stay within 500 of the support at all times, or die), or a situation where all responses end up in you losing (Nidalee's old "spear and away, can't chase me, can't run from me, dodge dodge dodge all game and if i hit you once, you lose" play style) are unhealthy. Can you show that group stealth is one of those ?

TequilaZombie1 votes

Just wanna point out that Riot was actually happy with the group stealth, they just felt that it wasn't fitting for such a selfish champion like Rengar.

I really wish Riot would give Garen some interaction with bushes. Even something as stupid as doing 1 more damage on his Q if he catches an enemy in an unwarded bush.

I'm against any ability that would allow my teammates to consistently troll me I.E. blast plants were so cancer when people didn't know how they worked.

Aptest2 votes

Abilities that interact with team mates in any way that isn't braindead-simple (buffs, shields, heals) will always allow you to troll your team mates.

Whether you get pulled by a rambo kalista and "asked" to engage, or tahm kench forces you to not pursue that low hp enemy or anivia just making your pathing that much harder, all of these abilities have some troll potential in them...

...but in return they allow for a very wide and fun range of interaction. If an ability can interact with both allies and opponents that makes the ability have multiple uses which in turn make the champion not dedicated to any specific thing.

which in turn is also good because if that one thing you do well suddenly becomes not important for the game you get to have some alternative gameplay to do, instead of spending 30 min in useless island because you went janna second pick and the team has 0 engage potential (janna mains, I understand them are fighting words, please don't eat me).

at the end of the day despite some blast cone fun, we don't see tahm kench players intentionally delivering their ADCs to opposing team (I meant for the 100% hp volibear to come with me, not the 20% ezreal), and we don't see blitz players bringing in the enemy tank (on purpose) and we don't see Ryze players putting down warps into the enemy fountain: The trolling potential, while it exists, is mostly a baseless scare. Whereas the awesomeness potential is there.

example:

me Bard and my Kalista were dropping the second tower in bottom lane. I eat a lux lazer and drop to 30% hp out of nowhere and we decide it's gtfo time. I put down a long tunnel backwards and we swoosh through it as our wards spot lux and volibear running at us.

we decide to ambush them at the tunnel exit and as they exit it i catch them with a double binding as kalista starts working them over. As I am super low hp by now they both go for me but kalista swoops me up right from under the lux E. I drop on top of them for the knock-up, my CC comes off cooldown so I flash backwards and double bind them again. Kalista puts some more autos in them then pop her spears and gets a double kill.

All this fun only can happen because we have abilities that impact both allies and opponent in a non-straightforward way. Yes we can ambush them at the end of the tunnel, but they get to decide whether to pursue or not. Also they can send the volibear early and have the lux trail once the voli took full aggro. The fact that opponents have a bunch of options on how to interact with the ability, means that bard kinda has to outplay them to get his way.

Which also means they don't feel like they got BSed. There no "point and click death", no "your skill means nothing" button. They took a bad tunnel in a bad way and they got outplayed. In essence we've won against them without taking away their agency in the game.

The same way goes for the kalista R. Sure she can miss a timing or whatever. But I can interact with her lift in any number of ways. The fact that I can use it for CC, for myself escaping, to get a good angle on a tunnel for both of us, as a reposition for my own burst skill, etc. The range of options that exist, simply because we've added that kalista can troll me with the ability, is immense.

I approve of this only if the traps make you move in that funny, lackadaisical spin that the Pokemon arrows do. Weeeeeee...

+1 for the Soul Eater reference.

Nah, but like in all honesty, I love the idea, and I think it should be able to be used on allies and enemies, but that's just my opinion. Cool concept either way, maybe used on a control mage.

InHaruhiWeTrust3 votes

I had this idea for a Nidalee rework. http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/skin-champion-concepts/tNBE6s8T-nidalee-rework-ideas The Basic idea was that she could change the functionality of the traps base on the type of terrain she set it on. One of the traps could be attached to a wall and when an enemy triggered the trap they would be pull into the wall and stunned(taking a small amount of dmg).

50000000000000001 votes

Idk if that fits Nidalee, but that sounds amazing.

InHaruhiWeTrust1 votes

My thinking was that she is a "huntress" and trapping is a big part of hunting(especially way back in the day). I wanted to take power out of her spears and put it somewhere else. Seeing as her current W is all but completely worthless i seemed like a good fit and it has a lot of potential thematically IMO.

Hello I am Bird1 votes

Oh god nidalee does enough damage and burst already she doesn't need cc.

InHaruhiWeTrust1 votes

obviously power would have to be taken. The goal was to take power out of her spears and put it else where. My idea was to make her spears be primarily for marking targets and being a long range poke(not long range burst) similar to lee sin Q in function but with more range, shorter follow up range, and consistent dmg.

Hige3 votes

it's an amazing idea actually! though there's a high chance for it to be buggy lol, it's basically Azir's wall but as a vector, there would be odd interaction with walls and generated terrain, I'd say there should be a stun attached to it if you hit a wall or generated terrain

Nevertheless, ironing out edge cases would be of utmost importance here, for example, how does it react against grounded units? how does it react against other knockbacks? imagine Poppy ulting someone who passes by an arrow, or malphite ulting on an arrow, Azir ulting on the opposite side of the arrow??

Not to mention that it would be pretty strong overall and the champion that has it on their kit should be balanced around it

Ralanr1 votes

I think for CC immune targets they would be unaffected (Poppy and Sion ult for example would ignore it) but against interruptible dashes, it'd work kinda like what happens when you dash into Gragas only for him to dash into you and push you back.

Sounds pretty cool. They could have another ability like Taliyah (I forget if it's her W or E) that's lets you nudge an enemy in a direction to help push them on it.

But here's the important question.

What would One For All: Mirror Mode look like with a champ with this ability.

Ralanr4 votes

Fun.

midnight oil242 votes

I know I'd play that.

Aquafuge1 votes

That would be awesome, it's not overpowered, can be counter played , and would add a whole new element to the strategies of the game. I would just have do no damage but effect everyone the same. Its a great ability but it can also backfire if not used correctly one of those high risk/high reward things. I'd make it so that the player triggering it has to step on it, just tossing it under someone wouldn't activate it.

Troll for Trump1 votes

Taliyah...?

So vector casted?

Envoy of Melody1 votes

It's a bit oppressive for melee characters, so I don't think this will be implemented anytime so soon with so many people complaining about Lethality Marksmen murdering the shit out of Melees. It's also another shot right into Master Yi's gut, which I think he doesn't deserve on top of all the bullshit he's going through right now. Poor guy can't go into a fight without perma stuns, and if isn't perma stuns it's a Jhin one shotting him for no good reason at all.

Aptest1 votes

I do not see melees being "oppressed" by Jhin traps and Cait traps. Shaco traps a little more because their range of engagement and CC power is more.

The good thing about a trap as a mechanism is that you get to outplay it. Usually you can understand where traps are. Run or jump around them. Or disable them with a red trinket. Or trigger them on purpose.

the only trap that has "no outplay" feel to them is Teemo's shrooms, and that is ONLY because there are so many of them.

Ever thought of an trap ability that enforced dashes?

This grammar.. say what.

Ralanr1 votes

My grammar is terrible. I never payed attention to it in elementary school and I haven't much cared to fix it.

Ironic considering I want to be a writer (even though I haven't really written anything for maybe a week...at least it feels like it with my procrastination).

ModCaptainMårvelous1 votes

Taliyah has that.

She literally has that.

Ralanr1 votes

Not exactly. In terms of basic function, yes. But it isn't a trap that you can lay down like Teemo, Shaco, or Jhin.
