why play ornn when you could play sej, maokai, gragas, galio, rammus ect

Ben Sharpio··19 votes·2,506 views

he literally has no place in the class of tanks LOL. This is what happens when you try to release a balanced champion nowadays. You get destroyed by everything else that does what you do, but easier.

Oh you mean his item upgrades are going to make people play him in higher elo? Yeah, ok.

Because Ornn has unique strengths he brings to a team that let his team scale artificially late game and he can set up some crazy engages.

He's simply undertuned right now, as I see it right now.

A champ that buffs lategame teams in a meta where "lategame" is 20-30 minutes and games are over by that point. Does not seem usefull at all, and considering Riots balacing it will not be usefull for a long time. And not realy, his engages are clearly telegraphed and dogeable. Why use orn when you can take sejuani or even Sion for better engage and better kit?

Enjutsu1 votes

Because Riot realses champions only for specific metas and once they're too weak for them they remove them from the game again.

ProfDrDeath1 votes

The most undertuned part of him is his base Armor. Compared with other tanks not named Sion, he is too low with 75@18. Other tanks are mostly in the 85-95 range.

I agree with this. As a collective, we tend to fall into the same trap every time a champion is released in an undertuned state, where we take a look at their balance and assume that their design is so fundamentally flawed that they have no place in the game. This is never the case. Champions like Bard, Gnar, Ivern and so on all entered League with very undertuned kits, to the point where a few thought they would remain unplayed forever. Fast forward a few weeks after their release, with just a few buffs, several of these champions were found to not only be viable, but in fact very strong, with the only major reason behind their initial lack of success being that players simply had not yet taken the time to learn them fully. I'd give Ornn a bit more time before declaring him unplayable, and I predict that he might even become both too strong and too heavily present in the metagame at some point.

After the hotfix, ornn is great now. Just look at my last game on him and the one before that. Rushing a sheen based item into steraks is amazing. Gives him great survivability combined with the hotfix buffs early on, that he can build the extra damage and THEN build his tank items later. Turning out to be a GREAT tank, idk what everyone is still complaining about.

RankOneUganda2 votes

yeah but a minor item buff is not nearly as impacting as picking a BETTER LATE GAME CHAMPION.

undertunned? seriously, can we STOP jumping to conclusions as soon as something gets released? it didn't even pass 4 weeks since release.

Inb4 Riot buffs him next patch because QQ and he became broken, then he got overnerfed and became legit trash.

Oh wait, that's a bit too close to home.

I think the problem comes when Riot tries to slap AD ratios on to a tank that doesn't want to build AD. Sion is the ONLY tank that doesn't suffer for his AD ratios, and that's because both abilities in his kit have high base damages that offset the damage lost from not building AD. Poppy has two worthless bonus AD ratios that do nothing for her. I can't understand these ratio placements

Muzét1 votes

They slapped only one but you know what? he doesn't gain anything from building cleaver. Unlike Sion Or Poppy. And since a AP Black Cleaver doesn't exist well better not build AD. So his Q is underwhelming (Damage AND pillar wise). His W scale more through leveling it (more Max/Current HP dmg) but doesn't have dmg ratio (since the ratio it's for the shield) and his E is a complete joke. I love playing him. I don't want him to be buffed everywhere BUT they should do something.

Many people have already bring his pillar in discussions. And it should be buffed. When I'm landing the Q's slow on the enemy but he got the time to go back to spawn and come back before the pillar comes up i know something is wrong. Even once maxed people got way too much time to react to it. And I meant WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY. Even Ashe. ASHE 325 MS without boots can easily step aside if she react right away and according to how close she is to the pillar.

And his E damage should scale more. Add some %max Hp scaling too. Or reduced base and add %Max HP. It feels like Ornn should do more damage to tanks than anything else. I wouldn't mine getting lower base dmg on it to get more %Max Hp. Or they could to the opposite. Atm it feels like he can do both but it isn't great at all.

First buff his Qlike everyone want to then let's see what we can do from there

CasterGilgamesh2 votes

Malady use to be ap black clever but then riot split it up into two items for some reason item 3115 item 3091

Muzét1 votes

From what I've seen the gold efficiency was high on that one.

CasterGilgamesh1 votes

it wouldnt have killed them to either increase the cost of it or just out right nerf its stats if it was too gold efficient there is not enough ap item variety let alone ap items that could support auto attacking ap champions

Muzét1 votes

Or that could support a new (or old) playstyles. Ahri Ekko Evelynn Kassadin Kayle (who is picking into AD sometimes to be efficient)Orianna Sona (still hoping for a reason to play her mid) TwistedFate Varus Veigar
but the best of them: Ezreal

And to talk about Malady on Ornn it wouldn't be that useful since he doesn't auto attack much. But yeah it could add something niche (just like current wit's end on WW)

Ralanr2 votes

Poppy's AD ratios are what allow her to build bruiser.

So you want Poppy to start building RoD if suddenly all of her AD ratios were AP?

It's not his AD ratio on his Q. It more just how his kit functions.

And yet nobody builds her that way. It's always sunfire Iceborne into tank. I'm not asking for AP scalings, I'm asking for scalings that make sense in the context of what Poppy is trying to do

But she's working fine.

I wonder about that though. Is she doing fine because she's in a good spot? Or is she doing fine because of the 1% of people who main her and offset her true statistics

ABlueQuaker1 votes

I think it's odd that he deals Physical Damage. Same with Poppy. Same with Sion. Same with (reworked) Sejuani.

Traditional Tanks have always been purely magic damage. Amumu, Cho, Galio, Singed, Malphite, Nautilus, Zac.

Why? Because that way they can get % HP Damage so that they have SOME damage late-game but that it doesn't benefit from teammates picking up item 3071 and because ultimately Armor is what people stack the most of.

PePsiLemoNN1 votes

And if they don't give theses ''random'' ratios people are gonna be like '' I USED TO PLAY FULL AD CRIT POPPY WHERE MUH SCALLING RITO U RUIN GAME DIVERSITY''

I don't know, I feel like champion design being tethered to the desire to appease those people tightens the belt around champion design when we're already reaching a point where champions with unique designs are getting harder and harder to make

robotmaster6 votes

I get to play as a goat god. Can you play as a goat god with the other tanks hhhmmmm?

InstaPoppy3 votes

Because orn gives his team mates a stronger full build than your enemy's. He has his own nice cc and engage but also enhances his allies cc.

Mianta2 votes

It's SUCH a rarity for a game in gold+ elos to go on long enough for players to hit max build so it's practically pointless. The game will already be determined by that point for the most part as well. The buffs are just not game-changing nor any reason to pick Ornn over any other vanguard.

Sejuani is really fun. Her damage output can be terrifying in the right hands. (Icebreaker is super good. In a 1v1, you can get 40% max HP damage with Frost + Ult.)

Mianta2 votes

THIS! ^^^ I didn't think anyone else felt the same way but oh thank the lord you do. He needs to get buffed badly, there's no logical reason to pick him over many other tanks. I mean don't get me wrong, I have dominated games and been the determining factor in many team fights. He is fun. But he has a higher learning curve and his abilities are extremely difficult to land well, and that makes them unreliable. Q is short distance, extremely thin, and the pillar takes forever to come up. E is a short distance and a terrible substitute for Sejuani's Q. Ult fairly thin for an ulti skillshot, and the fact that it's so difficult to redirect the ram due to timing and vulnerability to crowd control disruptions makes it a weak ultimate. Not to mention the fact that it can be blocked by Yasuo's windwall.

Enjutsu2 votes

Oh you mean his item upgrades are going to make people play him in higher elo? Yeah, ok.

you know this is a pretty Bullshit argument "oh you mean that legit argument why to pick him, ye you can't use that"

the fact that he makes evryone on the team scale better into late game is a damn unique reason to pick him.

Well there's another minor reason why to pick him, he can destroy player made terains, but i'd say his items is a good enough on its own.

Mianta2 votes
  1. Scale better? It will only be effective by the 45-50 minute mark. To be honest, only low elo games reach that time really because the players don't know how to finish. Not to mention they're not that large of buffs, especially for how much they cost. If your teammate ends up cluelessly rushing the buffed version of black cleaver or triforce early in the game, they're only screwing over themselves and your team in the end. I've played Ornn a decent amount of times. I've played him in toplane, jungle, and support. I've carried games, I've fed so badly I got reported. But in all but one of those games, I never even finished the last item.

  2. Destroying player made terrain is great but not very game changing. In the situation, one could say "Man I wish someone picked Ornn this game" as Jarvin hard-carries your opponents to victory. But it's not that detrimental. There are much better champions to pick from that offer more Cc, more tank, and more damage.

It Hertz When IP1 votes

I feel like if his upgrades touched the actives on items (where applicable), they might be better rush options. For example, I rushed the upgraded version of Redemption in ARAM, and I have to say without other items to support them, the stat boosts were really underwhelming.

Enjutsu1 votes

Just be honest with what you're asking, you think Orn is too weak and you want him buffed.

The main point this thread is trying to pull is stupid. Item upgrades are not as strong as you expect? sure why not, but how is this not a unique reason to pick him over others?

Nut on my Butt1 votes

He has things to offer that nobody else in the game does. Exclusive late game items and brittle.

Dextix LT1 votes

Brittle is extremelly hard to both apply and its effects are almost non existant and late-game items do not matter if the game ends by the 30 minute mark (Which now is the norm).

Brittle is extremelly hard to both apply and its effects are almost non existant and late-game items do not matter if the game ends by the 30 minute mark (Which now is the norm).

It shouldn't be difficult to apply with his ult, which could be really devistating with something like a Rakan ultimate. Also, the effects are far from non existent, as many Ahri players will put an extra 2 points into E before maxing W just for an extra .5 seconds of cc duration, which can be the difference between whether or not you get a kill, or whether or not you survive.

Dextix LT1 votes

It IS difficult to apply with his ult because it is easy to dodge it. Also this all depends on a follow up and having a team specifically built for that. If neither of those conditions are met, thats it, brittle is useless. The only other ability that has brittle on Orn is his w, which is so incredibly easy to dodge its not even funny.

And that is Orns problem, he is so dependant on so many things to make him "good". Again, why take him and require a specific team built around his ult when you can take sejuani or malphite and jsut be good on your own.

crzymdscntst1 votes

His big strength as I see it is being able to shop away from the shop.

It's going to be strong like Ivern's multiple buff bonus.

The upgrades are more like just icing on the cake, they mean very little in a sense.

Now imagine for a second that he buys support items away from base, steps into a bush or something and makes a support item on the spot. What would the power of that be?

Sire Hippington1 votes

Mostly because riot decided to mash all tanks into a cookie-cutter kit. All meta tanks have multiple sources off hard CC, atleast one soft CC, a gapcloser and %damage... If nearly all tanks follow the same concept, oviously only the 'best' will be used cause the others don't offer a real reason to pick them.

Acheron161 votes

He's meant to be a CC tank, something like Leona or Nautilus.

His twist is that he works better when other people bring extra CC, so that they have a longer effect due to his Brittle debuff.

And he's a new champion, new characters nowadays are usually launched weak. See Kayn: his Shadow Assassin form is STILL weak to this day.
