For tristana is relic shield or doran shield better to buy at the start of the game?

I see some people go relic shield, some people go doran shield. [sg-lux-2]

Probably dorans shield in most cases. (Depending on the match up, dorans blade or long sword+pots are situational choices too.)

Relic shield is/was used to help pump more gold into their support so they could get ardent censer ASAP, and it scales ok compared to dorans, but is slightly harder to last hit with, and doesn't lend itself as well to trading early.

Ardent censer has been nerfed and slightly reworked, so while censer is still somewhat strong, funnelling as much gold as possible into your support ASAP is probably not the optimal choice anymore. (And I say that as a support main.)

or you could go coin start as adc with a tank support going shield

and you get not only the procs from the relic shield but the coins that are dropped

You 'could' do that but it'd be a terrible idea.

Coins stats are fairly useless to most adcs, and you'd get extremely little value out of it at all stages of the game (contrast with targons giving a not entirely negligible shield and health which never hurts). You'd only get a few coin drops from your supports procs (since you should be last hitting properly the majority of the time, and if you're not then you're someone who should be getting AD or shield for the extra last hitting power anyway), and you wouldn't have any trading power or survivability from coin. A competent opponent would turn that into a lead and zone you away and then you wouldn't even be able to get your coin drops, and it'd be all around a bad time.

Starting coin as a farming laner just means you're terrible at CSing

lol no starting any gold gen item as a farming laner means your bad at csing

and its a money pit... you dont get enough gold to offset the delay in power spike for your role /champ

what about long sword and pots?

i mean you are gonna need the ad, you will use the item to build into other item and you arent wasting gold

It's situational. Relic shield is great to go for ardent censor rush

If you're playing normals and the support has significantly higher elo than you, OR you are in a bad matchup and destined to be stuck under your turret till it falls, you can take the relic shield. But with the ardent censer nerf I don't expect the pros to be doing as often. With the extra defensive stats and sustain you get from shield you can use a separate rune page that has AD seals and maybe even some glyphs so it doesn't hurt your CS nearly as badly.

Mostly it depends on what you are against.

Dorans shield offers a lot of sustain if someone is going to be poking you but not all ining you, like a Soraka or Sona or Caitlyn. It's also good vs dot people like Twitch, Brand, and Malzahar because the passive is refreshed on dot damage, so even DFT and such refreshes it. It's also good against Tristana cause her passive E damage will proc the healing on it, so walking in to last hit a few minions while she does the same doesn't make you instantly lose a trade. You take it not expecting to win lane, but just to survive long enough to get your big buy (BF, Cutlass, etc).

Relic shield offers more potions and offers more gold to your support. It can be a good item with a support who takes Relic cause most melee supports don't offer a heal/shield (Alistar and Taric are the only ones I can think of), or even with a mage support since most of them need gold for mage items. If the enemy might all in you (Blitz, Thresh, Leona), this might be a good option cause you'll have the pots to stay in lane after a fight. It's up to you though because you have no combat stats for the beginning part of lane.

The reason people were taking Relic on ADC was cause when you upgrade it to Targon's Brace, it gives you a passive shield that regenerates when out of combat plus gave gold to supports who could get Ardent quicker (when Ardent gave on hit life drain). Letting your support rush Ardent meant you could forego your early items for them to hit that point where Ardent sorta made up for your lack of stats. Now though, you'd have to decide if it's worth it. If you are against something with high burst like a Syndra or Talon, the shield might help you survive since it's a 255-340 based on level shield plus you'll have a support trying to help keep you alive too. Same if they have chain CC, cause all you need to do is survive the CC/damage and then you can lifesteal back up, and the 300 health might help your survive the CC.

For Tristana Relic Shield is a good option if you are feeling like buying it, and your Support can use Ardent i.e Janna, they rush this item due to the added gold you give them from Relic Shield. **Ardent is very powerful on Trist. **
